As the release of her third studio album ///Y/ (Maya) is just a few months away, it’s no surprise to see M.I.A.’s name making headlines. With that said, one article in particular has caught the alternative-pop star’s attention.
In a feature piece written for The New York Times titled “M.I.A.’s Agitprop Pop,” contributor Lynn Hirschberg questions the political motives and truth behind M.I.A.’s music and personal life, including the birth of her son Ikhyd. “In one of many contradictions that seem to provide the narrative for Maya’s life and art, Ikhyd was not, as she had repeatedly announced he would be, born at home in a pool of water.” She continues, “As usual, she wanted to transform her personal life into a political statement.”
M.I.A. responded by posting Hirschberg’s phone number on her Twitter page stating, “917.834.3158 CALL ME IF YOU WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT THE N Y T TRUTH ISSUE, ill b taking calls all day bitches ;).”
M.I.A. later said she plans to post the full interview on NeetRecordings.com this weekend, to which Hirschberg told the New York Observer, “I have no idea what she’s talking about.”
