Hip Hop Digital Singles Sales: The Week Ending 5/27/2012

Five new major label singles appeared this week. While Jay-Z & Kanye West’s 88-Keys-produced album opener “No Church In The Wild” already sported six-figure sales, the latest single from Watch The Throne got down on the charts. Also included was the controversial new single from Lupe Fiasco that has Pete Rock unhappy, and new joints from T.I., Rick Ross and Waka Flocka Flame.

Lupe Fiasco Says “Freedom Ain’t Free” And Neither Is His Song

Said to be a Food & Liquor 2 cut, Lupe Fiasco’s new single “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” drove headlines last week. The Simonsayz & B-Side cut samples (with permission) Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth on “T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You).” The New York producer and the Chicago emcee both released statements about a communication dispute, while over 50,000 fans paid for the single.

Wiz Khalifa & Maroon 5 Dial A Hit At The “Payphone”

Maroon 5’s second go-round with a Rostrum Records (following 2011’s Mac Miller remix of “Moves Like Jagger”) artist has transferred to a seven-figure-selling hit. “Payphone” appeared at #3 on this week’s Digital Singles chart, bumping Flo Rida from the top spot. Signed to Young Money Entertainment as a soloist, M5’s PJ Morton recently spoke to HipHopDX about getting down with the Pittsburgh emcee Wiz Khlifa’s vibe in a mutually-beneficial way.

    1. lol, how sad is it that Digital singles sales are what its about now

Them shits are .99 cents, then Itunes takes half off top, the label takes a cut, what you left with, like .20 a track

No wonder these dudes be ducking taxes, lol

      Better get that tour together

      1. So, if Nicki Minaj only made .10 cents per sale, she made $203,300 before taxes for only one single. Seems like a win to me, since 90% of the other rappers, would have to do 20 shows to get that. That single has only been for sale, for only 15 weeks.

      2. funny how you try to make a mockery of them even though they are still doing much better than anyone in your family and actually do what they love for a living.

      3. Those last two commenters are Nicki Minaj fans. Who cares about how much she makes, her music still sucks.

    2. WOW LAUGHTERHOUSE CAN’T EVEN CRACK TOP 200 HAMMER DANCE YA’LL

NO WONDER THEIR BULLSHIT IS PUSHED BACK AND BACK AND BACK AND BACK…

      … OFF A FUCKING CLIFF!!

    3. you’re so ignorant, singles on itunes are either 1.29 or .99 label & artist get 70% of the revenue generated per single sold. Out of that 70%, label and artist revert to the contract signed.. So in a case like Drake where it was reported he’s receiving 75% of his royalties and only gives 25% to the label as the distribution fee. He would get 75% of the 70%.. Now for Nicki, there were no statements released from her mangers or lawyers about her deal. So Idk.. but i’m guessing from how hot she was when she came out. It’s not too far from Drakes.

      1. Diggity, but yes, that’s a HUGE split, between label and artists. Most people are totally ignorant about the business, they don’t know that placement on this site is paid for, that ads and marketing costs come out of the ARTIST’S pocket etc.

(Anyone thinks, for example, Eminem is paying out of pocket for Slaughterhouse is delusional; they might get a deal on his beats but they’ll still end up in debt to Interscope.)

      1. hey, vote with your dollars. I bet your mad Slaughterhouse (or pick any underground rapper) was getting their shine. They don’t when you bootleg.

    4. I’m glad HipHopDX is shining light on singles sales. It’s good to see these artist are having SOME kind of way of getting money on their music since albums ain’t poppin’ like that no more. And while I’m on it, with the emphasis places on singles, we get a better variety of music and offers are taking chances and experimenting more, my iPod is pleased either way.
