Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 8/22/2010

Eminem’s Recovery held #1 for another week. The Aftermath release topped Kem’s latest by a margin of over 40,000. Recovery has now spent 10 weeks on the charts, with the vast majority of those as #1.

Rick Ross fell out of the Top 10 Teflon Don. The Def Jam rapper’s fourth official album features work from veterans such as No I.D., DJ Clark Kent and Cee-Lo. Ross’ album marches towards gold. Drake’s Thank Me Later was right behind Ricky at #12. Not crossing the million mark this week, it almost a certainty that the Toronto actor/emcee will see his first platinum next week.

Two veteran releases to the charts returned to the top of the urban place-holders. The Black Eyed PeasThe E.N.D. and Usher‘s Raymond v. Raymond took the #29 and #31 spots respectively. The Interscope/A&M/Geffen release from BEP has spent 63 weeks on the charts, and likely will head to triple platinum. Meanwhile, already platinum, Usher’s latest is said to be getting supplementary remixes on an upcoming platinum edition.

    1. yea rite?!! 116k copies?? when its for free download everywhere? Dont be fooled!! Soundscan and these major labels have an understanding!!

    2. damn…how many weeks he been out, n he still not patinum yet? who said his buzz was as big as 50 back in 03? ….and baby still over there spending his money. im telling u, in about 2 years drake is gonna be another disgruntled cash money employee.

    3. The Down Time freestyle:
U cant reach me, really doe, im fuckin astronomical, brain spaz, sporadic thoughts juggling like balls inside my damn skull, i really want it all but im broke like no kidding, i got the same feeling like a millionaire down to his last penny, yeah, going 4 broke, im outta control, outta my skulls n bones, outta my damn soul, outta arrangement, deranged like a caged man, u wanted me outta my slump, yeah baby, daddy snapped, the kid is back, back with my apron, back to cook up some more staple, rhymes so sweet n smooth sorta like maple, money is my only excuse, so i stay laid low, i cant afford to pay the dues, so im not on any label, but for the money though, ill rip your skully like a damn sport, switch blade to gunplay and smoke you like a newport, with all that blood gushing, call it ghetto surgery, pop you like an artery, i aint a killer but dont push me, test me, if you thinkin its a fallacy, having nothing aint funny, im having clown fantasies, laughing all the way to the bank after robbing my enemies, larcenic tendencies, i do it fresh to death, call it criminal intent how i walk, how i dress…

    4. Bun B you gotta get on the ball homie and start releasing singles…I mean where the hell is your video for your single? SMH that could have helped with his sells…
oh and shoutout to rick rozay…had them 50/em stans mad

      1. Bun B is a garbage rapper who should have never gotten 5 mics but then again who reads or listens to the Source since 1998 anyway??? You always here other rappers from the south hyping him up like he’s Scarface or somebody when he’s not. Face is 10 times the rapper Bun B is…

      1. Hey racist fuckers, em would sell even better if he was black. If it was just because he’s white wouldn’t yelawolf and asher roth be putting out platinum albums?

      2. Em sales so much b/c not all of his music is about Cars & Cash. Just like Pac, he raps about multiple aspects of life. Remember, he just recently passed Pac as the Biggest seller in HipHop.

      3. @bob0923, look up the term racist, the statement that EM sells more due to his race, is not a racist statement.

    5. I’m not a 50 stan like a lot of people here but you have to look at Ross’ CD as a flop sales wise. Ross has a billion guest appearances from some of the hottest people in the game. BMF gets crazy air play and his album is actually good in my opinion and I usually don’t mess with Dirty South MC’s.. With that said though this album is a flop from a sales perspective. He should have already done gold by now if not more. With all the shine the south rappers are getting, even in New York, and his rapping style is very New Yorkish (if I can make up a word)but I think his fakeness as a person is catching up with him.. But then again I said Lil Wayne would never sell records again after he toungue kissed Baby but I guess you young cats don’t mind dudes kissing other dudes now a days….

      1. To quote from below,

        “heflys20:

Da fuck? How did Rick Ross sell more than The Roots and Big Boi combined? That’s crazy.”

Not a flop in todays world my friend. If you aren’t a pop artist like Em, BEP, Drake, etc. you ain’t going platinum and it will take you a while to mark gold.

    6. man i havent heard one person in GBORO race have nothing to do with it but one person playing EM cd…not one song..imjustsayin

    7. Usher has the best album of anyone that has reached platinum on the above list. I’m not really a fan of any of Eminems work other than “Cleaning Out My Closet” and “Stan”. Black Eyed Peas had that “Ima Be” track that was straight. Going platinum only means you have a good white fanbase, nothing else.

      1. “Going platinum only means you have a good white fanbase, nothing else.”

Implying only white people buy cds.

      2. ROFL at this loser. One of the most anti-black statements ive ever seen.

Uve just indirectly stated that white people buy music and black people steal music – so uve basically just said an entire race of people are criminals.

well played mr racist, well played…

    8. OOYY Recovery was siicckkk!! Hi Haters!
And y’all talking bout fan base…c’mon son, you know em had to create that fan base. the dude wasnt loved like this when he first started.
Plus i aint an eminem fan but mehn, i couldnt resist the chills while listening to the leaked tracks. had to go get a RECOVERY. Yes i’m black.

    9. It’s no surprise that Fat Joe has fallen from the charts because how far can you go with 1st week sales of 12k? It’s all his fault because he abandoned his New York sound, to sound like a southern hip hop artist. Next album, he should stay in his lane and stop having an album full of features.
It’s no surprised either that Ross isn’t gold yet and he’s been out a 5 weeks so far. 15 guest appearances and still can’t get those numbers. His last album did over 400,000 and this one is no different. Mean while, Eminem ‘s Recovery had about 5 features and he’s still number one after 2 months of release. Shady/Aftermath always breaking records. King Mathers…

    10. im not saying that ALL of em’s sales are from white people, he is a superstar rapper but look at it this way. 60% of people who buy rap albums are white. theres only ONE white rapper ona superstar level. add a single with rihanna, hella promo, and you get an album that sells like this.

      1. WHAT THE FUCK DOES IT MATTER?!? I’m white and i bought the album. I’ve also bought a lot of black artists albums so what’s ure fucking point??

Some people are too quick to blame the white man for everything. Well fuck you. If someone releases something WORTH buying, I buy it. I can’t help it that Eminem is the greatest out there. If OJ Da Juiceman stops “making the trap say aye” and officer ricky stops “blowing money fast” and 50 cent stops gettin ppl to “have a baby by me”, then il buy there album. Until then, fuck off and stop playing the race card u fuckin fag.

    11. and congrats to DRIZZY cuz niggas said he was finna flop but if you look at it this way his debut album is about to go platinum. in this day & age that is saying something

      1. If you consider how quickly his singles have fallen out of itunes and the amount of buzz and hype that this guy got, platinum after 9 weeks is essentially a flop, when this guy was supposed to change the game.

      2. cmon man, u really believe that. now, i can agree that going platinum is not a flop by any means, but do u really think drake thinks his album is doing good? with all that hype (dude was everywhere) you actually think his album is doing good?

put it this way, his mixtape went gold, and his album that they put all this promotion dollars behind still aint even sell 1 million yet.

dude, 50 sold 10 mil on his debut, i know drake aint gonna ever see that number, but not even 1 mil (after all this time) on a debut album…..even game did damn near 6 mil on his debut….i dont care what era or time we in, this dude was the biggest thing in hip hop for the last year, n you want us to believe that he is doing good with numbers like that….gtfoh

      3. ok honestly i believed his album would go platinum by the 1st month but i still didnt think he deserved all that hype it was getting out of hand i mean he’s talented you cant argue that and he has songs here and there that are the shit he needed some hype but not all this shit im sure his second album will be better cuz wayne will lead him this time he is still 23 so hes young but the one that deserve all the hype is j.cole or jay electronica those guys can spit but i know they wont sell which is sad but i say we all should buy one album that should at least put them to gold and get recognition

    12. Any fool can tell that that white ass cracker sudden increese in sales is because of his lable buying them
teflon don and thank me later are both fucjing fire fuck shady gay ass

    13. @ these wack ass comments from these same wack ass niggaz….who the fuck goin platinum these days..a very small select group of artists that all fuck with each-other..yall nigz be talkin bout sales like its 99′..ross sellin like he supposed to.. each week u dummies come in here with the same old sad ass song bout EMINEM(WHITE JESUS) BEIN THE GREATEST..WHEN HE HAS NO BODY IN ANY CITY I BEEN TOO RECENTLY PLAYIN THAT WACK ASS BULLSHIT..MAKES U THINK…THAT MAN DONT GO ON TOUR..FUC OUTTA HERE..DEFINITELY NOT THE HOTTEST NIGGA OUT..JUST HIGHEST SELLIN..DRAKE MEANWHILE HAS SOLD OUT BOTH HIS SHOWS AT THE CRIB(CHICAGO)..IMJUSSAYIN..@ DUDE WHO SAID FATOE SHOULD GO BACK TO HIS ROOTS..U OBVIOUSLY HAVE NOT HEARD HIS MOST RECENT ALBUM..AND WHY WOULDNT HE FUC WIT DOWN SOUTH ARTISTS..THATS WHERE THE MONEY IS…NY IS A GRAVEYARD..BESIDES JAY…U CAN ONLY SHOOT A NIGGA IN THE HEAD SO MANY TIMES BEFORE NOBODY CARES…

      1. When Drake goes platinum times over like Shady, then holla at me. When Drake can sell out a baseball stadium like Eminem did off 80,000 people instead of Chicago Theater which hold 10k, then holla at me.

      2. WHAT CHICAGO THEATER..U TALKIN ABOUT THAT HOLD 10,000 PPL..ITS DEFINITELY NOT THE ONE IN CHICAGO MANE..AND FURTHERMORE ITS AN HONOR TO SELL OUT THE CHICAGO THEATER..IT MEANS U R ACTUALLY “HOT” SOMETHING EMINEM HAS NOT BEEN SINCE MARSHALL MATHERS AND A COUPLE TRACKS OFF THE EMINEM SHOW..THE SHOW U TALKIN ABOUT IS PROLLY FROM A FEW YRS AGO BECAUSE ALL I SEE HIM DOIN NOW IS HOLDIN JAY COATTAILS..A NIGGA WHO ACTUALLY RAPS ABOUT SOMETHIN…

      3. Hot? Eminem is about to do 2 baseball stadiums next month and both of them sold out. His album is almost at 4 million worldwide and Drake hasn’t even hit 1 million yet and his album came out a week before Shady…

      1. well u are definitely the only one waiting for that shit to come out. Banks is a flop artist and this release will be his masterpiece – i predict under 10,000 first week sales.

    14. Out of all of these, The Roots and Big Boi had the better albums to me. I know a lot of you guys on Drake’s dick still bump his wack CD and it’s just hysterical to me. Honestly that dude blew up way too fast and the fame is catching up to him. He had some potential to be something great back in his early days but he’s just terrible now with wayne and the others. I’ve heard his album and the rhymes are just so hollow like I don’t feel him at all. Empty ass lyrics about him bitching about his lifestyle.

      1. What I’m trying to say is that most radio shit is watered down for the masses and altered to appeal to people who are used to having this shoved down their throat. I like Indie Hip Hop better because they aren’t constrained by big label bosses telling them to change their music so that kids will download it then forget the song a month later. Drake is no exception. Now I won’t go as far to say that he doesn’t rhyme well, but the subjects he touches on aren’t varied enough for me. Women, fame, money and his new lifestyle. That about covers his topics. Look I don’t go around these sites just to type shit about Drake it’s just that some people really can’t see the falseness of the radio. Basically, I just like to listen to artists with deeper lyrical content that aren’t on the radio, that’s all.

G-Unit/Shady/Aftermath always breaking records!

Platinum has never-ever been associated with Rick Roass or his MayFlop Music flunkies! DeeperThanRap Flopped just like his new album is doing! Stall out at 400k with all that promo n features…L.A. Reid it ain’t da 90’s!!!

      Poor Fat Joe!!

    16. How come there’s no Aaliyah stories? I mean, she WAS R&B for a stretch, and when she died, she was in her prime. Can we please pay her some respects??!! She deserves it!! How can hiphopdx.com call themselves a black music website without covering Aaliyah today?

      1. just because she was black doesnt mean she’s all that relevant to hip hop. Jada Pinkett Smith is black and she’s a singer in a rock band – should there be a feature on this band? No? didnt think so…

    17. Don’t be mad cause your favorite artist can’t outsell Eminem. Don’t be mad because Itunes doesn’t accept food stamps. Ask your therapist for a hug and stop bitching about Drake.

    18. Ayo this aint no stan shit this is real shit…. anybody who says eminem is only sellin’ records b/c he’s white is simply a hater. hell, it might even be true, but what if jay-z was white? how relevent would he be today? How about rick ross? The roots? Didn’t think so….

      1. Javito_1, everybody you listed is relevant!!! fucking rasicts!!!! who cares eminem is selling, good for him and his record label. everybody else also released top notch music as well! you would not know if you did buy the music. stop promoting hate punkass bitch!!!

    19. homies, pumper shit against santana is damn hard, pumper murdered this nigga’s career, nice beat, pumper went hard on the beat ,he sounds a little bit like 50 ,but i love his shit.

    20. I love how the record sales article always manages to set race relations back 40 years…smh. Jerri curl and suntan lotion everywhere!

    21. Em is the best just face it wayne fans and drake fans wish they could sell like that i bet every body thought that drake was going to sell like crazy but no no folks dont like that bubblegum shit unless you party all the time and drink at the club u aint feeling that bullshit fukk canada nigga this America where shit goes down not a place where crime dont exist talk about some real shit and duane stop trying to bang youve allready been exposed give it up please i used to like you untill u started being a fake ass slob nigga GD till the world blow!

    22. OMG people… Em is a good rapper. Better then average, but THE BEST RAPPER???? Hell to the no!!!! I don’t give a flying phuck if his album sold 20million copies that means nothing to me. That doesn’t make you the best rapper. 50 sold 10 million of GRODT and nobody with any brains was calling him the best. MC Hammer sold like 8 million records and you know d@mn well he’s not even close to being an subpar rapper. Man even Vanilla Ice sold records. I will say this though if your numbers are mad low like Fat Joe (and I’m from the Bronx) that means something. If your album sold 10 copies and your mom and best friend bought 6 of those 10 copies you should think about filling out a FedEx Application.

      1. Dog, you’re comparing Em to Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer regarding sales. But the fact is, EM IS the best rapper. Do you even listen to his lyrics, his flow, his delivery, patterns?? This MUHFUCKA is basically the only rapper who has UNLIMITED flows. This dude can literally switch his style up EVERY track, and he can adjust to ANY rhythm/beat change. Look at Vinnie Paz for example, dude is ill as fuck, but he ONLY HAS ONE STYLE. Same shit everytime. No one can fuck with EM. sorry….

      2. Em’s kinda been using the same style over and over a lot recently, but yeah I still agree he’s ill. Doesn’t make him the best though. Pharoahe Monch, for example, does all that and more.

    23. em willgo down in history as one of the best to do it of course but he is not THE BEST period! not at all! he will slay 95% of the rap game with ease but there is always gonna be that 5% that can hang with him and thats just being real and honest

    24. I don’t focus on the sales aspect too much. I’m just happy that some decent hip-hop music was released this summer. Im a big Em fan and I was bumping his CD but when that Big Boi album dropped, that Em got taken out permanerntly. That Roots album is fire too. The Ross was kinda huff, bumped it a few times and then threw it in the back of a CD case. The same with that semi wack Drake album. All in all, this was a good summer for hiphop and best of all, there was no raspy throat Wayne album to mess everything up.

    25. my two fav and in my opinion a couple of the greatest rappers are on this list!! none other then eminem and tech n9ne!!!

    26. ay yo jon boy..shut tha fuck up wayne da shit quit lyin to yo self..u praise everybody in hip hop but try and down talk wayne lmao nigga please

    27. Selling a million this day and age is a good accomplishment. But, Drake just now getting to that point seems like a bit of a disappointment to me considering all the hype he had going in.

    28. NOBODY IN “REAL” LIFE IS TALKING ABOUT EMINEM BEIN THE BEST AT ANYTHING..NOT ONE MUHFUCKA I KNOW OR ONE PERSON I HAVE EVER HAD A MUSIC DEBATE WITH HAS EVER MENTIONED EMINEM IN ANY “BEST” CATEGORY..THIS IS AN INTERNET ONLY ARGUMENT..ITS SO MANY OF YALL..BUT WHERE YALL AT..MUST BE THE SUBURBS..BECAUSE ITS DEFINITELY NOT THE INNER CITY..ITS GOOFY’S ON HERE TALKIN ABOUT HIS RAP PATTERNS AND SWITCHIN FLOWS UP..CLOWNS..THIS MAN THEN MADE THE SAME SONG FOR 10 YRS..IM NOT BUYIN IT’..HE CAN SELL 10 MORE MILLIONS AND GONE BE THE SAME “HE WAS HOT 10 YRS AGO”..WHEN THAT BULLSHIT WORKED..NO URBAN AIRPLAY..NO PLAY IN THE CLUBS..NO PLAY IN CARS..NO PLAY AT THE BARBEQUES..NO PLAY FROM THE BOOTLEGGERS..AND IF THE BOOTLEGGERS DONT HAVE YO SHIT..U NOT HOT…THIS IS REAL TALK…LAMEZ

      1. 480235, check my zipcode bro, we bang Em shit round here. Daily, dude i without a doubt the most accomplished rapper out the MidWest next to Elzhi Royce and Tech N9ne. Not to mention Gulity, Lupe, Yeezy and everybody else out my region give props to Em for making a Lane for Niggas like us.

    29. Eminem is the NEW KING OF POP!!!…FUCK YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC ARTIST!…313 ALL DAY BITCHES!… THE MIDWEST ALWAYS RUNS THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!…MICHEAL JACKSON, PRINCE, MADONNA, KANYE, & EM!
