Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 5/15/2011

New artists swarmed the Top 200 of the charts this week. SNL‘s Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone watched their sophomore Comedy/Rap album Turtleneck & Chain land a Top 3 debut. The second go-round after 2009’s Incredibad features emcees Nicki Minaj and Snoop Dogg.

OFWGKTA made their first splash on the charts this week. Odd Future’s leader, Tyler, the Creator released his studio debut Goblin on XL Recordings. A follow-up to 2009’s self-released Bastard, Goblin features band-mates Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis and Frank Ocean. The largely self-produced effort scored a Top 5 debut, as one of the stronger independent Hip Hop showings in 2011.

Twenty five years after releasing their first album, New York Hip Hop/Punk trio the Beastie Boys are enjoying the critical and commercial success of their eighth studio album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. The EMI Records release, which has released before Part One, features artists that Adrock, MCA and Mike D have influenced, including Nas and Santigold.

Veteran Soul singer Raphael Saadiq released his fourth studio solo in Stone Rollin’. The former front-man for Tony! Toni! Toné! and Lucy Pearl made another throwback effort, after the success of 2008’s The Way I See It. The work scored a Top 15 debut for Saadiq and Columbia Records.

Bruno Mars’ debut finally crossed the million-mark, as Doo-Wops & Holligans fell three spots this week with all the new additions to the charts.

      1. That’s The Same Thing That Hazed My Head AKA The Same Thing I Was Thinking Of Since Now You Mentioned Chris Brown Peace Dtp229 Out

    1. Lupe’s album has way too much sales, his worst album by far can’t be the best selling record in his catalog.

      1. shit nigga comment is funny comin from a nigga comin on here posting a comment wit a picture of him tryin to look like a baller. where did you rent that car from? and btw oversized shirts died like the jheri curl.

      2. nigga go take off that big ass tee dam. your big brother mad as hell right now. nigga like 5’5 rocking a 6’4

      1. Props to Em on another highly successful release. While I did enjoy the album first listen, I usually just go straight to tracks like “Cold Wind Blows”, “On Fire” and “Going Through Changes” now and skip the rest. Can’t wait for that “Bad Meets Evil” EP though, that’ll be hot! Fuck what you think.

      2. Lol @ Anonymoususer…You basically just proved my point. The album is shit minus 2-3 songs. If you have to skip songs on an album then that means that shit is not a classic.

      3. I know we ain’t talking about a classic album here. lmao, it was a decent album for 2010. Em bounced back, that’s pretty much all there is to it really imo.

      4. Yep. I feel the same way as Anonymous because i stayed skipping songs on that album too lol Now an album like Diabolic’s ”Liar & a Thief” defines classic(really hate that word though) because to this day,i still listen to that album all the way through w/o skipping

      5. Can’t stand and listen to ems voice but that Em n ROYCE album might just be worth checking out!

      6. Yeah, that Diabolic album was great, his wordplay is beyond amazing. Akir, another dope rapper, is one the same label.

      1. STFU, Odd Future killing rap, them niggas is lame. 45 K with all that hype and marketing and they couldn’t even hit six. They fuckin suck.

        Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      2. These niggas is lame as fuck with there shitty ass music. Man shit this makes you long for the days when hip hop was actually good rather than these skinny ass niggas ridin around in skateboards and probably making out. These lames and Lil B and the New Boyz make Cali and LA look wack as fuck!

      3. PPl argue about what a flop is all the time. But I see ppl still dont get it and dont really think abou ish!

        45,000 * 10 = 450,000 .00 US Dollars.

Thats half a Mill in cash.
That not the net profit ofcourse cause everybody get their take.

What Tyler made of that depends on his contracts.

But the bottom Line is its early in the game and he generated 450,000.00.

That is a success. Shit is relative. U cant base whats a success by comparing number with Em.

And Im not familiar with dudes music and has nothing to with the logic behind my arguement.

Im just tryna sell 2,000 copies of my album completely by myself.

    2. 45,000 for the NEXT BIG NIGGA IN RAP!?

      hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

flop. massive flop. consider all the promotion, the net dickriding, dx being on the dick, the fans didnt support. no plaque. no hits. cant wait till these annoying niggas go away. if tyler can only push 40 thou, his click gonna be starving. hes the biggest nigga in the group, his crew gonna be lucky to move 1,000 units. sales aint everything, but when the hype is this high, and the number is that low, you can go ahead and call it a FLOP! and he aint on no indy. sony got these niggas marketing space, distro, advance. just for the record. immortal technique, mf doom, atmosphere, sell more records than this nigga, without HALF the promo. so he aint even a big fish on the underground scene.

      1. These niggas Odd Future give LA a bad name. God how far has hip hop fallen when people riding on the dicks of htese faggot ass niggas in they tight jeans and talking bout bullshit like sandwitches. While I’m at it, fuck the New Boyz, Lil B, Souljaboy, Gucci and all them other niggas that fucked up hip hop!

      2. Record sales overall are in the toilet. Odd Future don’t have no mainstream hits. This is a great for an underground artist.

      3. these niggas got outsold by a parody rap album! LONELY ISLAND sold more copies, with some weird al shit, that sold more then the next NEW IT nigga in rap! WOW! every news outlet is so scared to diss these faggot niggas. like tyler will snub them. please. he thinks hes the biggest thing talkin, the truth is here. the people dont love these niggas. the PRESS loves these niggas! the next NEW niggas, will have the PRESS, and the PEOPLE. and the next NEW IT NIGGAS, wont NEED the press! how many interviews this nigga do?! how many posters up around the world?! how many magazine ads!? how many shows?! 45,000!? WOW! kids dont have any respect for the art form, they think its sposed to be free. this niggas biggest fans downloaded it. next week dropoff gonna be SERIOUS. this is as good as its gonna get. odd future, it is. hip hop went from loving niggas for ill verses, and hot beats. to loving niggas for being young and outrageous. they dress cool, they dont give a fuck, SWAG! NAH, fuck that, and fuck u. crack babies running hip hop right now, they think theyre wild, but they just flat out half gay and pussy!

      4. Lol @ these real hip hop heads talking about sales haha…Lil Wayne outsells Nas and you say sales don’t matter, but now because its someone you don’t personally like, sales all of a sudden matter? Fuck that. His numbers are respectable, he’s 20 and has just started getting a major following the last few months..comparing him against DOOM is retarded, he’s been doing it since the 80s of course is fan base is bigger.

      5. mf doom. never in his life. got as much promo as this nigga tyler. and his shit STILL sells more. tyler been on magazine covers, every blog, every faggot niggas facebook page. he got his face on billboards, posters in the UK, posters in the US. hes on the road, doing shows all over. THE ALBUM FLOPPED. this nigga is 20, on a major label, with major distro. hes been named the next big thing by just about every hip hop site. the people dont AGREE. these niggas are on hot 97. you dont get on hot 97, with PAYOLA. mf doom, has never been on hot 97. immortal technique, never been on hot 97. fuckin atmoshphere, never been on hot 97. they never had the marketing budget this kid had. and they still sell more. without all the hype. and media love. im sorry, but when you walk around, like the game is yours, and your first album sells 46 thou. even in 2011, thats a flop. shit. ICP sells more than these niggas. thats a real CULT following. these kids got the flavor of the month following. 2nd week numbers will be FUN!

      6. Sadly you are all wrong about one thing. This album was not released by a major label. It was released by XL, which is an indie label. Furthermore, the deal they just signed with Sony, for their future albums i might add, is for distribution only. They started their own label to be distributed by sony, that is all.

      7. ^^^ LOOK AT YOUR FACE!

you look like a bloated LESBIAN!

thats what your standard ODD FUTURE fan looks like. fat, white, and lonely.

      8. Nothing suprising about the whack sales. The whole hype was only created by the press and the net, nothing most of the people wanted to know by themselves, besides a few faggots. The press almost forced people to like their shit. Selling 45,000 without any promo and straight ignoring of media is something to be proud of, but not when you are literally everywhere, you couldn’t go to hiphop site without seeing their faces on the front page.

      9. damn, people who leave these comments is mad ignorant. Brian Andrew is right. OF (THE GROUP) has a distribution deal thru sony. while goblin was released thru XL. you all are more than welcome to check the wikipedia article for the label. it says “inependent record label” in the first sentence.

    3. 45,000 is not flopping! That nigga didn’t even have a hit song on the radio or anything. Most ppl have never heard of the dude so 45k is pretty damn good for an independent release you dumb motherfuckers

      1. he ain’t independent. since when is SONY independent? you know nothin bout the business. this kid has distribution, through SONY. which is why it’s available in stores, nation wide. 45,000 is a complete flop. the press run was immense. magazine covers. internet stardom. word of mouth. look at the advertising, all over. best believe the label is disappointed with these first week numbers. its funny, niggas think odd future is underground, so they assume they’re operating as an independent outfit. not the case. they get radio time. they get hot 97 spots. they have a crazy push. it’s called payola. in case you don’t know, stations won’t play your song, unless your label pays them. tyler flopped. epic flop, really. the most highly publicized new artist in hip hop. out sold by a parody rap album from a SNL kid.

      2. Most people have never heard of him??? He on every major hip hop site daily! WTF u talkin about!???

      3. they have distribution through sony ONLY meaning they do all there own marketing, and generate all there own buzz.. with no lable to come out the pocket for any marketing whats so ever…..Meaning labels aren’t paying for anything but putting albums in stores … so that 45,000 copies is to be expected… and like dude said.. A LOT of people don’t konw who they are…There startdom has only been strictly through internet and what few tv performances they’ve had.

      4. Yo I thought this album Goblin is out on the label xxl ..like the magazine. The next move is on Sony… goblin was already finished before they got the Sony deal

      5. it’s a respectable feat for a guy who likens himself to the antichrist and was a total unknown just a year ago.

      6. for a 1st mainstream album of course its gonna sell decent but in due time his shit bound to hit 10k or less its all HYPE nd DICKRIDIN den its on to the next one

      7. And goblin was released through XL. And like I said most motherfuckers have no clue who Tyler the creator is. I’m sure he, odd future and XL are very happy with the sales

    4. here they go again with whats a flop an whats not an he get $50 per cd so he made five trillion off that 45k yeahh rite

all deals is not the same NO LIMIT records is gone these indie niggaz dont have that MASTER P deal

    5. I am not a fan of Tyler but you have to give him some props. His life span has been very brief and to sell that much the first week is great. His sales will increase in due time. Not to mention the crew album ain’t even out yet. Do you think these cats are mad right now. Fresh outta high school touring making money and only being in the public eye for less than a year selling records not free downloads I think they are on the right track. They have a fan base cuzz they sell out wherever they perform. MF Doom is not moving units stop playing.

      1. I agree to an extent. But you’re complete wrong about Doom. That nigga sells much more than many people think, he’s got a huge following, damn, people buy his rereleases for like 60$.

    6. SON, 45k in the FIRST week for an INDEPENDENT release is amazing, bottom line. Damn, that shit’s crazy!!

      1. tyler already had money. hes from the burbs. he’s never had a job. he skates and makes shitty music all day. suburban coons.

      2. no ice cube going gold on a indie release is amazing lloyd banks having a gold single on a indie is amazing

    7. Yall hating big on that Tyler nigga… Get off his dick and stack yo dough up.. Mans wasnt even highly advertised and he sold 45K in a week.. Yall acting like mans getting promoted big.

      1. Dude shut the fuck up and stop sucking on Tyler’s nuts. I’m the real Creator!

    8. haha tyler talk did all that dumb shit the last 2 weeks and still aint gon see gold lol yall niggas givin props like he nice nigga is trash bird chest ass nigga anybody takin offense is a dick licker

      1. wow u fuckin lil hater…..first of all he said himeself he would be surprised if he even sol 20,000…..hes sold double of what he thought he would sell…..2nd of all he had no major record label behind him,no “famous” feutered guests or producers

      2. Wow. Such an intelligent observation.
Seriously, son- you need to learn some fucking English!
Some of these comments are downright embarrassing.
You illiterate rejects almost make me ashamed to be a Hip Hop fan.
And for all you people dogging out Tyler so hard- I think that’s pure jealously.
Y’all jealous that they have a record deal and are being backed by Sony while maintaining 100% creative control.
I bet Lupe wishes he had 100% creative control right now…

    9. First off no artist gets ALL the money from their sales unless their personally selling it out of their own trunk or at concerts. You guys, especially aspiring rappers here, should look up ‘points on a record contract’.

Secondly, when you have had as much mainstream exposure as Tyler, these are bad sales no way to spin it. He had his own MTV special, a couple Award show performances, TV performances, getting constant coverage on damn near every big Hip Hop site and magazine, co-signs by rappers across all types of demographics and even sites like Pitchfork. He flopped, plain a simple.

      1. if he was on a major label, maybe. but he released this album thru XL, an independent label, so 45 thou is good. that’s like hearing madvillain selling 50 thou out the gate from stones throw.

    10. Edit, I mean they’re not their. And I forgot to add, his video has near 10 million views are Youtube. He’s not exactly unknown at this point.

    11. You hatin ass pussy niggas… Ima find every bitch here that downloaded my shit, scoop they eyes out, rape one socket while my nigga frank ocean fucks the other, slap our blood covered dicks together, gang bang your blind ass, slice the rest of you up and feed it to ya mom. Oh and ima rape her too. Because thas how I do. I kill. Is true. No lie. Big fuckin butt orgy with my niggas in wolf gang. All day. Odd future in this bitch.

GOLF DICKS! CHILL I MEAN WANG!

    12. This dude is gonna end up in jail getting rape by a big goon LMFAO fuck Tyler this didn’t creat nothing lol

    13. ofwgkta is indie u dumbfucks and thats fuckin incredible for an indie label fuck icp atmophere and immortal tech… and curren$y is the best in the game and he aint gettin first week numbers like that so eat a dick free earl and jets foo

    14. 45,000 first week sold for a newcomer indie artist would be very impressive if album sales meant anything!

Do album sales dictate how good an album is? No. So why the fuck do people still care. Hip Hop is the only genre where fans actually give a fuck about album sales – it sums the art-form up

      1. @ Tempoclash – I agree… Album sales have become more important than album ratings that sums this shit up!

I dont believe Odd Future are the greatest thing ever. But they’re definitely the most original thing that hip hop has produced in a LONG time… Yet they get as much hate off the “hip hop community” as any other artist. Hip Hop is fucked up – ud all rather go listen to Eminem and Lupe’s latest watered down bullshit albums. People seem to have forgotten hip hop is about doing something different, they’ve made they’re own lane and left the so called “legends” of the game looking tired because creatively they’ve all been stuck doing the same shit as each other for the past 10 years

      2. Most hip hop fans don’t buy Lasers or Recovery, they receive as much hate as Odd Future or even more.

    15. I agree… Album sales have become more important than album ratings that sums this shit up!

    16. I find it incredible every time the new alsum sales article is posted how many people come onto it to leave comments like ‘Album sales don’t mean shit’

If that is what u TRULY believe, why do u even bother clicking on an article which is EXCLUSIVELY about album sales?!?!?!? Furthermore, if sales are so completely unimportant to you, why does an article about sales compel you to leave such intense comments every week.

My theory is its because u favourite artists can’t sell shit becasue they are garbage. Just a theory though 😉

    17. Yea most ppl don’t know who is….unless you go on sites like this. I’m talking about the majority of people who listen to rap like teenagers who buy all the shit that sells a lot

      1. yea your right, most people dont know who he is and the majority that do know thinks that he is garbage so 45k is definitely not flopping..Released through XL not sony..independent label debut 45k nigga BOW!….bitches

    18. its funny how everyone keeps saying that recovery sucks, but yet its almost sold 4 mill…you haters need to disappear quickly…

      1. point proven. who gives a fuck how many it sold – doesnt meen its any good. bruno mars sold a mill does that meen its a classic?? all them albums above 300,000 on that list above are bullshit

    19. Tyler, the Creator 45k? That’s good & yeah, his album “Goblin” is great.

but Eminem 4 milli? God Damn!!!

    20. Good look for Bruno Mars, he’s a good singer, he sounds great live. I’m not a fan of his music though he’s alot better then any Justin Bieber or somebody like that. Music now in days is just wack. Don’t you guys remember how music was in the early 2000’s and the years before that? Music now is so wack, not just in hip hop but in all genres. Thats the real reason why sales are so low. Theres a few good songs here and there but it’s not as consistant as it use to be. Just straight up ass

    21. I guess we all should start appealing to suburban kids, since the top 3 hip hop albums do just that…

      1. Yeah, if you want to sell the most records you should go after the group that holds the biggest share in the market. Also, according to Forbes it seems that gays and women generate the most sales. So you should actually act more like a winy faggot.

    22. all of you are dumbasses! Your mothers’ should be shot for having dumbasses like yourselves! And if your mother is dead, she should be dug up and skull fucked for producing such worthless pieces of shits like yourselves!!!! None of you wouldn’t know good music if it was embedded in you ear! Kids go play!!!!!!!!!!!!

    23. I bet most of u ppl don’t know OFWGKTA controls all their masters. Tyler sold 45k…45,000 x $10.99 for each album sold= $494,000 in his bank account dumb fucks

      1. LOL, you must be joking, owning their masters doesn’t mean they somehow magically get the full retail price on each album – the label gets some, the distributor gets some, if he has independent PR they get some, whoever is stocking it gets some (iTunes, Amazon, etc).
On a major label you will only get about a dollar per album, you’d only get more if you’re on an independent label, which he isn’t.

      2. $494,000 minus distribution, PR, advertising, recording, mixing, mastering, lawyer(s), ect. and then whatever is left divided and distributed among 11 or so group members. stay in school. rappin’ don’t pay no more.

    24. lonely island did better then tyler, the creator -.- AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHABAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHSWAGAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

    25. Pathetic!!! Look at those numbers. Remember when people actually supported hip hop? These guys can’t even sell 50K with albums a month old? LOL.

    26. LMAO @ all these little boys who will straight up tell you record sales don’t mean shit, yet they coming @ Tyler for his.
All things considered, I think he did good. You guys acting like he had a breakthrough radio single or some shit lol. Good for em, end of story.

    27. LOL at people thinking XL records (tyler’s label) being ‘small’ or anything like other indie labels

Some other artists signed to them:
      Adele (200k sold first week)
      Gorillaz
      M.I.A
      The Prodigy
      Radiohead
      Ratatat
      RJD2
      Vampire Weekend
      Weezer
