Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 12/9/2012

The key addition to the charts this past week was courtesy of Wiz Khalifa. The DXnext alum and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania emcee’s O.N.F.I.C. was within striking distance of a #1, but fell just shy of Taylor Swift for a #2 debut. This matches Wiz’s first release with Atlantic Records, last year’s Rolling Papers, which sold over 50,000 more units than the sophomore.

Last week’s Wu-Block also remained on the charts, along with the likes of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Alicia Keys, Machine Gun Kelly and Ne-Yo.

Wiz Khalifa’s O.N.I.F.C. Is First Class

The leader of the Taylor Gang released his second solo album with Atlantic (following a string of independent projects). O.N.I.F.C. (Only Nigga In First Class) was led by a six-month single in “Work Hard, Play Hard” followed by “Remember You.” The Rostrum Records flagship artist maintained personnel on his Rolling Papers follow-up, working with I.D. Labs, Jim Jonsin and Stargate on production.

The album, selling approximately 141,000 first-week units, featured wife Amber Rose, along with appearances by Wiz’s usual cast of Rap veterans, this time including Juicy J, Cam’ron, Pharrell and 2 Chainz.

Wu-Block Back For A Second Round

The Wu-Block project, led by Ghostface Killah and Sheek Louch, sold another 4,000 units in its second week at retail. The Staten Island and Yonkers delegates brought in members of their crews on various songs from the project. Notably absent from the Wu is RZA, both as a vocalist and producer, as well as U-God, while Erykah Badu appears on the Termanology-produced “Drivin’ Around.” Other producers of note include Erick Sermon and Red Spyda

      1. YEAH..BANG’EM SMURF!

        NIPSEY HUSSLE!

etc..,……DON’T EVER PUT THE BEASTIE BOYS ABOVE PE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. This matches Wiz’s first release with Atlantic Records, last year’s Rolling Papers, which sold over 50,000 more units than the sophomore.

how does it match rolling papers if it sold 50k less

    2. i think kendrick must have the highest selling hip-hop album of 2012, anyone sold more than 481K this year? nicki doesnt count….

      1. rick ross has the highest selling album so far i think he is at 515k so far and is still in the top 200 but kendrick will pass him by pretty soon but ross has only one single out of of his album so far so both of them are doing really good numbers

      2. ross hasnt sold 500k yet

where did you get 515 from? last number i saw was 438k in october and you know hes only selling 1 or 2k a week max

    3. still not bad numbers by wiz, but he has the commercial potential to do so much better. he made a crap album so in turn his sales went down. hopefully he comes back strong with album number 3.

      1. and ‘god forgives, i don’t’ is gold too and it hasnt sold 500k yet either, thats how it works you idiot. 500k shipped = gold record

      2. Wrong, wrong, wrong. GFID hasn’t SOLD 500k yet, so its not gold. 500k sold=record is gold. That’s how it really works. Dumb niggas that don’t know the business think they know everything.

      3. You don’t have to sell 500,000 albums to go gold, or at least not to get a gold plaque, you just have to SHIP 500,000 albums. If Kendrick has sold 481,000 then he’s probably shipped well over 500,000.

      4. Then he’s still not gold, muthafucker. That’s retarded. How do you go gold or platinum off of shipped albums that hasn’t even sold that much? Niggas don’t know shit about the business.

      5. then explain to me how rick ross’s GFID is gold and he has had a gold plaque since september and he was only at 438k in october, look it up on wikipedia

      6. You have no idea how wrong you are. GFID hasn’t even went gold because it didn’t SELL 500k. Fuck Wikipedia. That website is always getting edited by random people.

      7. That nigga was lying, which he has a history of doing. This is the same nigga who claimed to be a gangsta when he was a C.O.

      8. It annoys me to see people argue over something that is EASILY verifiable.

The dude already told you to look the shit up and I dont know why you didnt.

RIAA does its certifications BASED on SHIPMENTS (minus returns). Therefore if the album has shipped over 500k, its gold, if its shipped the mil its platinum.

Many many many times we have seen artists get gold or platinum plaques before they have actually sold over that number because its based on shipments. There are metrics that go into calculating how many units will be moved by x time once they can see the trend.

If you still dont want to believe me, just visit RIAA site yourself and actually do some reading:

        http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinum.php?content_selector=certification

This isnt as hard as you guys are making it out to be, this is how its been for quite some time now. Understand it so you dont have to bicker about bullshit in the future.

      9. Nigga, everything you said is a bunch of bullshit. Nobody goes gold or platinum off of shipped album, they go gold or platinum off of album SALES!! Quit the bullshit.

      10. “SoundScan measures over-the-counter sales at music retail locations, while the RIAA’s certification levels are based on unit shipments (minus returns)”

and its on the RIAA website it cant be fake

      11. if you went to the link provided you would know you’re wrong, we’re all right and you’re a hoe who doesn’t know what hes talking about

      12. you didnt say anything.

you cant win an arguement by saying “you’re wrong” over and over again when someone proves you wrong, fucking kids these days

    4. K-Dot needs to drop another single soon with a video cuz when he does that, his sales will continue to grow and hopefully reach platinum without selling out and faking the funk like all these wankstas in hip pop nowadays. Truth.

      1. Bitch below me…how bout you make me shut up cuz I have NO problem telling you who I am. How bout you pusscakes?

      1. D&N made the list…….2 CHAIN$ GET A DOSE OF NELLY/CHINGY!….WHERE IS YOUNG JEEZY NOW?…..TIP stay gettin’ $$$…….TDC_C

      1. That’s not a lot of money to slit 4 or 5 ways. What’s that $28,000 per and you still have to factor cost. Art design, printing, mixing, mastering, studio time, travel time, and all the extra crap that comes with it. Hell it’s almost a $500.00 to get your crap copy written.

      2. Wu Block sold internationally son

Wu-Tang is worldwide. They are big down here in Australia. Wu Block is hot down here

      1. Who said he was? I SAID AND I QUOTE “Laughing @ Cee Lo , Only random bums from East Point/College park, GA. bought that record.”- So, my point is only people in East Point/College Park bought those CD’s. The West Side people.

    5. “no because her music sucks now”

According to you, but then again you aren’t the dmographic she’s targeting so stop getting so emotional.

    6. “Yonkers”

Don’t come at me with that Yonkers shit, cause I guarantee you no one here bought that trash.

      1. If you guarantee it then prove it. Up the link with every Yonkers resident signing off saying they don’t own Wiz’ new album. Until then, STFU B

    7. Those Wu numbers are an embarrassment, niggas need to learn to let shit go & just tour, putting out more wack albums no one want’s to listen to only hurts their legacy

      1. You do realize they’re on an independent label, right? Meaning they’re making more money off album sales than artists signed to a major. Plus, there wasn’t a lot of promo.

      2. Actually they’re not making any money because being independent means they have to pay for everything from pressing the cd’s, to promo, to recording the album with everything that entails ie paying for studio time, producers, engineers, sample clearance, mixing & mastering, to travelling so let’s be real here

      3. Did you also forget that they do a lot of shows? That’s a lot of cheese there. Artists make more money off of shows than album sales. Plus, these dudes probably have their own businesses,so that’s some extra cash.

      4. Yeah they make money of shows but the people who come to those shows don’t wanna here this new trash, the come for the old classics, if they wanted the new stuff they would buy it, which brings me to my original point they should stop making new music & stick to touring their classics

      5. They ARE making money. Just not millions and things like they used to…but 13,000 copies sold is $130,000 split a couple ways and E1 doesn’t take that much. So yeah, it’s not big money. But while everyone else is struggling to make a living….they can do it off just music alone, which isn’t bad.

      6. That $130,000 is too high because it depends on where these albums were sold & how much they were sold for & also i remember Camron said he only sees $8 per record after the album had sold over 100k copies sold, the only way they would see a profit is if they had paid for & did everything themselves

    8. Wow Kids! If you’re dreaming of a career in the pop music field, drop those thoughts now. Alicia Keys just 237k so far?! I personally don’t like the single and maybe others didn’t either, but she is a major star and look at her numbers – I know the album just came out but wow. She was good for half a milli the first week. That will barely go gold. At least KL will do gold and maybe 2 Chains can creep up there. So all is not lost.

As far as Wutang, getting those cats together for work is a problem. Now the fans just gave them reason to not ever get back together again. And with RZA launching a Hollywood career, its probably a (w)rap. Hopefully though, they can get together and drop a 20 year anniversary project next year.

What kind of fraud are they trying to perpetrate with the Nicki Minaj Roman Reloaded project? Are they are now counting both albums, the original and the re-release as one, because the re-release has moved less than 50k total. She is a big star, but thinking you could just rape her fans like that was wrong.

      1. word of mouth and one single that wasn’t even that large on a mainstream level…

the definition of success right there.

quality music wins out for once

    9. Bought that WuBlock. Don’t regret it. My only complaint…more Styles P. Was gonna get that Kendrick Lamar but they were sold out…

    10. Damn Alicia will barely go gold, she should be making a killing especially around these holiday times, if i were her i would hold of on buying that $12 million Jersey mansion she’s buying

    11. WU/Block will probably make the same amount off their cd that Meek will Dreams and Nightmares….Im not talking about everything, but specifically cd sales.

      1. True. They also have higher worldwide sales cause the Wu are popular worldwide. I’m from Australia and Wu Block is hot over here. No one knows who Meek is down here.

    12. LMAO!! WIZ FLOPPED. THIS ANOREXIC NIGGA DID LESS NUMBERS WITH ONIFC THAN WITH ROLLING PAPERS. BETTER HOPE YOU MADE A LOT OF MONEY AND SIGN THAT PRE-NUP SO THAT AMBER ROSE HOE DOESN’T RAPE YOU OF YOUR CHEESE. YOU WHIPPED SIMP.

    13. hehe, yo what the fuck is wrong this Wiz pant? this nigga is fruity as hell man. he starting to dress like lil wayne bitch ass.

      1. told the world> he wrote a comment..nice try at being witty ..anyone would notice wiz pants are fruity i hear it alot

      2. This is an international website. Have you ever heard the nickname for the internet (international network) which is worldwide web? So again, the world read you guys fixated about another man’s pants.

      1. “The gold certification doesnt mean that the LP has hit the 500,000 copy threshold just yet, but rather that enough copies of the album has been shipped to retail outlets. good kid doesnt show up in the RIAAs gold and platinum searchable database either, but the pending plaque is an inevitability.”

Not sure what’s hard to understand about how this works. “Gold” and “Platinum” don’t refer to albums purchased by people. They refer to albums purchased. People had the same uneducated reaction when Wayne got his plaque.
        https://hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.17756/title.lil-waynes-tha-carter-iv-certified-double-platinum

Again, the plaques don’t have anything to do with how many people bought the album, unless we count digital sales. An artist can get their certification from the RIAA without selling the amount of copies the certification implies, because the sales are not a prerequisite. This isn’t rocket science. Don’t bitch about things you have no control over.

      2. He’s gold my dude, he was gold last week. He went gold worldwide, people have to understand you get plaques worldwide. Hell a you sell fucking 50k in Canada and you’re considered Gold so…

      3. Wow. The both of you are stupid as hell. That ain’t how shit work. Kendrick’s not gold, unfortunately, because he hasn’t sold 500k.

      4. The stores buy the CD’s children. You can call semantics with sold, shipped all you want. GKMC is certified gold.

An easy example is looking at your neighborhood store, when Coca-Cola comes, they provide sodas and an invoice, the store PAYS for them. Coca-Cola is not waiting for the store to scan each soda for sales numbers.

      5. No. It doesn’t work like that. GKMC isn’t gold yet. That last shit you said has nothing to do with this and is inaccurate.

      6. PEOPLE SAYING PLAQUES ARE NOT BASED ON SHIPMENTS ARE IGNORANT AND REFUSE TO ACCEPT FACTS… Kendrick been gold ever since he SHIPPED 500,000 units into stores.

The amount of those units actually sold is irrelevant to the certification.

    14. Here is a list of next years potential album releases:
      1.RICK ROSS – ?
      2.AKON STADIUM
      3.EMINEM – ?
      4.KANYE WEST – ?
      5.KID CUDI INDICUD
6.T.I. TROUBLE MAN: HE WHO WEARS THE CROWN

What a sick year 2013 gonna be!!!

    15. Nicki Minaj should have waited for American Idol to re-release her album… This was not a great time to put it out… These rappers have no business smarts

      1. not necessarily true. in a business perceptive look at it as a marathon, not a race. the press from American Idol will continue throughout its season, giving her publicity from the new year forward along with of course planned tours, another single and video releases from her.

I’m not sure if she’s doing it that way, but it would make sense. Although I know she re-released this project so she can push for another platinum album.. those first week sales and her current are a poor reflection on her marketing team and label. Let’s see what happens..

      2. ^^^ She put out all the singles from that re-release already in one go…Shes not putting out anymore from this album.. And she cant tour while she does the show… So yeah, this was a waste.

      3. “These rappers have no business smarts”…rappers don’t make these decisions dumass. they have label executives who claim to have business smarts that do.

      4. ^^^ Really? She told you that? You was there at the meeting? You think cause you read blogs for 9 hours a day makes you an authority on some shit? You think a multi million dollar enterprise leaves thier investment decisions to a hoe from the bronx? You think people on the internet are your friends loser? You think typing tough makes you a gangster?

    16. wow kendrick lamar will be gold next week funny how 2chainz album been out longer than kendricks and his aint even gold yet lol but good to see album sales somewhat doing good atleast rappers are getting plauqes for their work being that gold is considered the new platinum

    17. Girl On Fire has to be album of the year, regardless of sales. If you’re a genuine music follower, the main focus when discussing a record is the quality of the music, not sale figures. Alicia’s audience is more mature, erudite, urbane and sophisticated than the typical CD-buying public, hence, artists who appeal to kids generally sell more copies than an artist who has an older fan base, even when the quality is sub par. The only mistake the album makes is including Nicki on the title track. She totally ruins that song, but apart from that, the LP’s perfect. I’ve been bumping this ish since it first came out and I’ll continue into the new year. Fuck the haters, Girl On Fire’s a classic.

      1. What youre saying is bull because alicia used to sell 500,000-800,000 first week and go muti platinum every album. ..And Older people buy more albums then young people, young people download it… Her album didnt sell because shes changed herself too much. Ive been a fan since the second album, and its clear the 3 albums she put of after the diary are sub-par in comparison. The only real amazing song on her new album is the one with maxwell.. Everything else is forgettable.

      2. That was before the popular onset of the digital era. Once people figured out that they can hear the whole album on this site or other’s, why would you buy it. When people were doing Triple and Quadruple Platinum, it was because you couldn’t stream or download the whole album for free before it came out. Now you can hear 90% of a person’s album months before it’s released. Why buy it then? No anticipation, no creating the need, no supply and demand principle. That’s why most only do 90-150k it’s first week. Remember when artist would make plat in two weeks? Yeah, before the download & stream boom.

      3. Dude above said it best these young kids dont understand how records sell and how they used to sell about 15 years ago dudes would go plat in a week now u can pirate music from the internet and listen to an album before you buy why buy anything new that comes out when most likely u downloaded it for free

    18. wow sad when Alicia and Rhianna struggle to go gold, theres no hope for you rappers ya’ll dunn f*cked da game up ….

      1. man it aint got nothing to do with rap people dont buy albums any more and pirate music off the internet thats why its so hard to go gold for artists

      2. I don’t think either of those albums will struggle to reach gold. I think they both dropped within the last month.Once the tours get started these albums will be gold in six months, at the longest, in the next two realistically.

    19. Future potential of G.K.M.C:
      2012 – Gold
      2013 – Platinum
      2014 – Multi Platinum
2015 – The album will be considered an indisputable CLASSIC

… and of course Kendrick Lamar will be considered one of the best rappers of ALL TIME!!

Best believe and God knows best.

      1. Maybe in ten years it could eventually reach platinum if it continues to be discussed and stays popular..

Illmatic and 36 Chambers are still only platinum after damn near 20 years being out, and being called two of the greatest Hip Hop albums ever made.

    20. “I’m guessing that demographic is teenage white girls who also like Justin Bieber and One Direction”

Are teenage girls supposed to be listening to Nas? lol

    21. “But YOU take up for her and we KNOW her demographic includes gays”

Sorry to hear you’re gay. Don’t worry. I won’t treat you any different.

      1. ^^
French guy: what the fuck is a Wu-Tang?
German guy: what the fuck is a Wu-Tang?
Greek guy: what the fuck is a Wu-Tang?
Thai guy: what the fuck is a Wu-Tang?
Ethiopian guy: what the fuck is a Wu-Tang?
Brazilian guy: what the fuck is a Wu-Tang?
Martian guy: what the fuck is a Wu-Tang?

      2. Everyone you mentioned: WU TANG CLAN AIN’T NUTTIN TA FUCK WIT!! WU TANG FOREVER!!

It’s obvious you’re a Wu Tang hater because of that bullshit comment. Everyone around the world knows the Wu Tang.

      3. I’m from Australia, and Wu-Tang is well known down here. But not as many people as you would expect know who the fuck someone like Drake is.. If Ghostface and Drake dropped on the same day down here, they would sell about the same.

Wu-Tang is the greatest group of all time. They may have had their time at the top, and it may have come and gone, but what they did was legendary, and they still have loyal fans all over the world who buy every fuckin album that drops.

    22. I like come on here to see the albums sales just as much as the next fan but ya’ll dudes on here guestimating how much money these artist have/make are just funny.

    23. wiz khalifa is a fucking washed up, mainstream, faggot with zero meaning behind his lyrics. we all know you have cars that are push to start, the best weed around, and millions of dollars, now please stop dressing and rapping like a complete douchebag…

    24. up to I saw the draft which had said $4195, I didn’t believe that my neighbours mother was truley receiving money parttime from there pretty old laptop.. there neighbour has been doing this less than eight months and as of now repayed the mortgage on their mini mansion and bought a new opel.
      go to..WWW.youtubeGoogleAmericanJob.qr.net/jVwS/watch?v=lQPBSI0W

    25. good numbers but i got them all free. im 26 years old i done buy 900 cd’s in my life time rap and rnb. i need some for free i got 56 free so far im gonna try to get at least half for free. i hope i dont go to hell for this, i bought 0 cd’s in 2012 but i don’t make extra copies for friends just for me my personal use.peace

    26. 2PAC is and always will be the greatest rapper of all time by far

Lyrical Content – 2PAC beats any other rapper, his music was so meaningful, the themes of most of Tupac’s songs are the violence and hardship in inner cities, racism, other social problems – PAC WINS

Voice – 2PAC had the greatest voice is rap, it was perfect, he can be angry and agressive in Hit Em Up and Changes, then soft in Dear Mama. MTV voted him 09 of the best voices in music ever, michael jackson was 10th – PAC was ahead of every other rapper

Lyrical Skill – Yeah pac didnt have the greatest metaphors, it’s easy to have skillful lyrics when your rapping about cars, sex, money, sex , cars, PAC told stories and rapped about real important topics, and he didnt try to have skillful lyrics, also the greatest rapper for lyrical skill is eminem. and 2pac beats him on every other catogary

Greatest Lyricist – Pac haands down, other than his lyrics having great meaning, PAC made 400 songs in one year, he writ and recorded the songs in The Don Kiluminati in 7 days, people will great metaphors in there lyrics take YEARS TO MAKE THEIR ‘CLASSIC’ Albums fukin idiot

      Greatest Person – PAC

    27. as Adam implied I’m shocked that you able to earn $7328 in one month on the internet. did you look at this page Great70.com

      1. You all hate on whatever or whoever be on that Commercial shit, but none of you cats out BUYING the underground shit. SO, Nicki or whoever be putting out album that sell and make millions, tour and make millions, and live and eat off the art. I can not find a reason to hate on an artist who does what they have to do to make loot. Trust me, I am a Hip Hop Junkie, a Detroit Hip Hop head, but its feast or famine in this Music Game, hot emcees aint being scooped up and paid millions to spit crazy 16s anymore, cause YOU ALL aint buyin the shit. Artists that are getting deals are selling their souls and can’t even read blog sites cause foul mouth suckers have an avenue to spew hate. It’s cool, you do not like an artist, don’t waste your time listening to their shit, or buying their shit. However, if we all went out and bought the music we CLAIM on Blog Sites that we love, those artists would be making dough, and wouldn’t disappear after a year of giving away all their art for free.

    28. Kendrick almost at gold, ya bish… Hip Hop is on the come back. Fuck the downloading bullshit, if “you’re a fan,” you’d get your ass up, and go to Target or Bestbuy and purchase albums. $10-$15 every so often, ain’t breaking the bank.

    29. Is it just me or is hip hop lost and in a dark place? I mean onifc jesus piece trouble man and vicious lies and dangerous rumors are all just too average for me… can’t explain it. The late 90’s and early 2000’s WERE THE SHIT

      1. Early to mid 90’s were the shit..late 90’s/200 ushered in the shiny suit era…and its been downhill since..the soul was extracted

    30. Who the fuck buys Taylor Swifts albums?? I swear this broad almost sells like Adele without having the good music. But that stupid little girl goes multi plat every album singing about the same shit. Anyways, Alicia Keys aint going platinum this time. Kendrick lamar looking good. Wu Block… Thats a damn shame. They simply just forgot about Lupe Fiasco.

      1. man only reason her album sales are so much is cus in tha music community there is nobody pirating music and downloading or sharing it illegaly its jus a diff culture when tha culture finally realizes how easy it is to get free music

      1. First of all, he sells MORE than Rick Ross, haha you dummy! Why would he ever sign with that idiot, when he’s signed to Dr. Dre on Aftermath?

    31. I got the greatest idea it jus came to me since wiz is the taylor gang and swift is taylor they should jus make one big embaressment to music together and call it “musically uninclined”

    32. “I swear this broad almost sells like Adele without having the good music”

She’s got millions of fans who probably know the words to every one of her songs. That’s who buys her albums.

    33. “man only reason her album sales are so much is cus in tha music community there is nobody pirating music and downloading or sharing it illegaly”

This qualifies as the dumbest thing you’ve ever typed. She sells a mill in a week and that’s luck, but if KL did it, you’d be calling him the entertainer of the decade lol Artists sell based on alot of things. Taylor Swift’s music is safe, and in this day and age that’s what alot of people, specifically younger college kids, like, and will support with their money. They can’t relate to most hip hop cause most of it is garbage.

    34. But not as many people as you would expect know who someone like Drake is”

I bet if you asked every celebrity in Hollywood who Drake was they’d tell you he’s on their kids Ipod all day. Then ask them who Ghostface was and they’d pause for several seconds, before shaking their head and walking away.

    35. “Nope. Grown folks meaning people over 30”

But it’s the people under 20 who make the most impact consumer buying wise.

      1. That’s true, but them muthafuckers are the ones who are into Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and any other crappy Top 40 artists.

      1. Quote-man, you are the biggest faggot on the planet. Anyone who disrespects legends need to be slapped a thousand times. (In Ed Lover’s voice) C’mon son!!

    36. Wiz Khalifa is garbage bro! When you’re a big artist like that you’re supposed to sell MORE as your career goes on, not LESS. The only reason Wiz blew up in the first place is because of “Black and Yellow” I guarantee it. Anyways, it’s good to see Wu-Block on the charts for a second straight week…

    37. “These dudes are legends. That enough is proof”

Legends in what sense? They had one album that got people’s attention, then steadily underachieved ever since.

    38. “The people under 20 are the ones with music taste”

This coming from a bitter 40 year old. Don’t hate the youth, grandpa. They just don’t understand your fascination with old rappers and tired songs about nothing.

      1. You don’t know me, nigga. I’m 24 years old. And those “old rappers” made better songs than most of these today. And those “tired songs about nothing” have more meaning than a LOT of songs today, which also talks about NOTHING.
