Drake’s “Scorpion” Went Platinum On Its Release Date

Drake’s Scorpion album has proven to be a juggernaut.

The OVO boss’ double LP was certified platinum by the RIAA on June 29, the same day of its release. Although Drake’s album has been streamed a record-breaking number of times, its certification is due in large part to the success of its singles.

God’s Plan” and “Nice for What” both went multi-platinum, racking up more than 10 million equivalent units. Under the RIAA’s album-equivalent unit standards, 1,500 streams or 10 track sales are equivalent to one album sale, making Scorpion eligible for platinum status upon its release.

On top of the huge streaming numbers, Drake is likely on pace for additional platinum plaques thanks to the impending CD release of Scorpion. The pop superstar is scheduled to drop physical copies of his double LP on July 13.

    1. All the haters (like the one below) will say it’s fake platinum, but this is the way to get those sales and certifications now. Deal with it. Scorpion is album of the century. No other album, before and after, will top it, unless Drake outperforms himself on his next one. He’s the GOAT.

    2. I dont believe in streaming numbers because you can actually buy that shit. 100$ for 50.000 plays. Add that number up with whatever budget a record company got and anybody can go platinum by these weak ass standards. And yeah, I know record companies used to buy albums in the stores to push for that number one so this is really nothing new. Only number I care about is how big stadiums an artist can sell out. But really, the only thing I really care about is if the music is good or not. Finally, Im not taking anything away from Drakes accomplishments. Im just saying that articles based on streamcounts have no value because streamnumbers are easily bought and manipulated.

    3. RIAA certs are just meaningless now. So the guy gets day one platinum status because he sold the shit out of two pop singles he released over 6 months ago and then recycled them on this album? Wow. Dude releases a pop album and we’re supposed to compare him to someone like Pac who moved 600,000 actual physical entire albums in less than a week. Not a chance. NASIR and DAYTONA even for their lengths, were better albums than Scorpion.

    4. It’s all streams, no real investment. Stop acting as if you don’t know this. Like Beyoncé said “if she cared about streams, she would have put lemonade on Spotify. Not hating, the project is ok but let’s stop pretending that these are sales

    5. Lol, y’all dissing Drake for getting Platinum on his first day, but if it happened to Kendrick, then everyone wouldn’t be hating as much. Drake really is the GOAT.

      1. The difference is Kendrick would be moving actual albums instead of relying on 6 month old singles. Wonder what Drake made off that single compared to how much he actually gave away. Fraudulent charity.

        1. What are you talking about? Kendrick’s already done it. Good Kid MAAD City when platinum before streaming even existed

    6. I’m sure everyone has their own opinions about this, so I’m also sure there’s room to agree to disagree. But the album went platinum so quickly in part because of the beef. Everybody were anticipating Drake’s direct response to Pusha T, which he didn’t fully respond in the way people had hoped for. So his major 2018 L concerning that still stands uninterrupted. Although there are a few standouts on the album, the lyrics are not hitting the level Drakes been consistently on since If You’re Reading This Its Too Late. I’m certain by now Drake has imprinted on many. He could put out the most trash album and those people will still praise him. But after about 3 straight full rotations of the album, I deleted it from my Apple Music library. That’s not to say I hated it or anything or not a fan of his. I just wasn’t impressed enough to keep it, and therefore dont have any interest in buying the physical copy. I’m sure that after everyone’s curiosity has been met with the end results, the album is going to fall sharply under the top 10 but still remain in the top 100 for awhile. As for the songs, I do expect at least 2 to be within the top 10.

    7. Dont let this distract you from the fact that drake was in black face, tried to hide his child and make his baby momma get an abortion, then when she decided to keep it he decided to make money off it with addidas until pusha thanos snapped his fingers:o). Also dont forget he made j prince Look like a damn fool saying drake had a epic diss track but he wouldnt release it because he is too much of a nice guy:0). Also dont forget he let pusha t lyrically bitch slap his mom, dad, baby mom, son and his best friend….DRAKE IS A COWARD:0)

      1. You have sacrificed your own integrity, not for personal gain but to ty and take down another man who will never acknowledge your existence – what would you call yourself?

      2. Worried about a black man doing black face… And he explained why. You think he did it for racist reasons? Fk clown.

    8. this streaming platinum needs to cease. Bring back CDz ASAP. If you aint on CD, you aint really out there. Keep cassettes and vinyl too. Just because a new format is out there, don’t mean we need to get rid of the past ones. As far as drake goes, hes a monster. Congratulations to him and I wont hear his LP til its on Compact Disc. Im waiting on the carters and cardi B too. Hoe

      1. Well the retail stores are following the streaming craze. Best Buy announced their store chains will cease all physical cd’s today. This is a new era of music

    9. The album is super trash. You wanna hear some real Hip Hop get that new Westside Gunn Supreme Blientele

    10. Nas flopped Pusha flopped Teyana flopped absent from the charts . Ye he’s @ the Bottom of the charts . Ye flopped

      1. How ye and kid see ghost still in top 10 ktse still in top 10. And came out before scorpion. Get of drakes d**k before you turn up preganant and he hide the world from the baby. Hahaha

    11. Scorpion is long, meager, underwhelming, uninspired, stale, boring 90 mins of trash. Salute to the people who listened to it and even bought that trash. You the real MVP.

      1. And the run gon keep goin until people realise he’s doing impersonations of other rapper’s styles and get bored of the fakes.

But people congratulate you on being fake these days, huh.

          1. Canadian C notes? Hahahaha. You fucking herbed yourself. Participating in Grayke cosplay fantasy. Hahahaha

    12. SO HE HAD HIS TWO PLATINUM SINGLES NICE FOR WHAT AND GOD’S PLAN SO IT COULD BE INSTANTLY PLATINUM. WE GET IT DRAKE, YOU ARE INSECURE AS FCK.

    13. “My Mount Rushmore is me with four different expressions” Survival slaps harder than an African Mom

    14. Birdman doesn’t have to buy a million copy’s anymore he only needed 100 pc’s. Fuck streams!

    15. Imma release a song tomorrow and bet I go streaming gold in a day

    16. God’s Plan? Did God have Spotify put Drake’s face on every playlist in their library and recommend the album to every user even if they don’t listen to rap?

Going platinum just means a million people stupid as fuck.

      1. I opened spotify the day it came out and it was litterally 5 pictures of drake on playlist recommendations and the album up top. If that happened anytime someone put out an album everybody would be platinum. QUESTION. I havent heard the album yet. If you have and you loved it. Which 3 songs should I check out and why?

        1. Emotionless, 8 Out Of 10 & Sandra’s Rose.

Drake goes from saying he isn’t going to respond to beef to passive-aggressively referencing situations, still putting gun sound effects on tracks even tho Drizzy never been about that life, and his best bars are where he’s just boasting about nothing.

Look for a rapper with a story to tell or a style, cos this album is better as an instrumental.

        2. Mob ties, sandra’s rose, blue tint are my top picks. I liked all the songs on side A and this is the first rap album I listened to and liked all the tracks. Side b kicked in and I started skipping tracks but then I came back to it later and they started to grow on me more and more.
Its crazy to me how I didn’t like so many of drake’s albums (views, what a time to be alive, more life they had good songs but a lot of songs I didn’t like but it was ok because he usually released stuff I liked outside of the albums)
and people loved them and showed so much goodwill.
Then he puts out one of his best album works imo and people are like naah not because of the music but stuff outside of the music making it trendy to hate him.

      2. They all suck. Is pop bullshit. Do yourself a favor and listen to the new Nas or Westside Gunn if you feel like hearing some Hip-Hop…

    17. If you need to use Ep’s and Single sales numbers to inflate Album Sale numbers your career is over.

    18. …and there it is. Pusha T won the battle, but Drake won the war. Why? Because Drake is still selling records. Sad to say but Push isn’t popular enough to kill Drake’s career.

      1. Push just performed infront of 55.000 people in Norway. And damn near everybody knew every word to infrared which was bizarre as hell to witness. Also, having your album streamed is not the same as selling records.

            1. And Drake makes over 10x what Pusha Tee does for a show.. He akso tours the world AND North America consistently and constantly selling out stadiums.. Pusher Tee can’t do that

      2. He didnt win the War, he didnt win anything. He maybe survived the War. Like his brainwashed Super Stanbase would stop buying his mediocre music because of a beef. You yound stupid, fam.

    19. Ye barely hanging on @ the Bottom of the charts . Ye Flopped . Nas Pusha and Teyana are ghost on the charts #4Flops

    20. im just in the cut sitting sidewaaaaaaaaaaaays / wayyyy that you looking alllllll the timeeeeeee #hookgod

    21. Apple sent me an ALERT to my phone telling me to listen to his new album so I’m not surprised. No artist has EVER been pushed by the machine like this. Crazy

      1. U2 for one…. remember when Apple secretly downloaded their album to like every iphone in the world

    22. The album is average at best. I live in the u.k and there is adverts on t.v promoting his album so he should sell regardless…. any1 who thinks record sales means anything knows nothing

    23. I wonder how many dicks he had to suck or how often he had to spread the booty to be pushed like this cause the album is wack.

    24. Drake is the number one rapper in the game, the greatest players get the most hate. Let’s see Kendrick Elfmar, J. Snore or Weak MiLL chart continuously for 500 weeks. Only the 6️⃣ God can do that, you haters. Real thing, you know? #? Season
