DJ Premier Worked On Songs For Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN.” But They Didn’t Make The Cut

Kendrick Lamar‘s latest studio album DAMN. didn’t disappoint many fans despite its change in direction from the previous releases, and like before, there exist tracks left off the final product. DJ Premier confirmed in a tweet that he and Kung Fu Kenny worked on songs for the album that wound up not making it to the official release.

A fan on Twitter posted a question to their timeline asking if the legendary Gang Starr producer and beatsmith would ever collaborate with the Compton MC. The fan’s question was answered, which could open up possibilities for future tunes.

“I’m sure one day it’ll happen…We worked on a couple joints but they didn’t make the album…that’s family so it’s all good,” tweeted Primo on Friday (May 13).

There was some cutting room floor material that eventually morphed into the untitled unmastered. release, so perhaps some of the work DJ Premier did with K.Dot will see the light of day down the road.

    1. Let’s be honest, he’s worked on A NUMBER of major artists projects in the last 10 to 15 years and didn’t make the cut..

      1. Lets be all the way honest then his sound never evolved, he doesnt take risk. he has 1 solid formula thats great for what it is but he never ventures from that and hasnt been able to give us any additional classics. Alchemist sticks to the boombap style to but hes so creative his newer shit actually sounds like newer shit

        1. Premo got a new album with MC Eight on a G-Funk vibe. That’s him evolving and switching things up. You don’t have to jump on the latest wave if you’re Premier. Dude is legendary and has his own lane.

      1. Disagree. The Kid Capri stuff is completely unnecessary, intro is worthless, and most of the lead-ins serve zero purpose. The songs themselves are FLAWLESS, both beats and lyrics but the other stuff is out of place in a streaming music/singles driven game. You can still make a cohesive album without pointless skits and intros.
PAC did it with ALL EYEZ ON ME 20 years ago – great album of SONGS. That “New Kung Fu Kenny” bullshit will be old in six weeks, adds zero VALUE to an album as dope as DAMN.
        Just my opinion tho.

        1. ” You can still make a cohesive album without pointless skits and intros.” Go ahead then. We’ll keep an eye out for you. Good luck wit dat!

    2. Premier has a very distinct sound that unfortunately doesn’t connect with today’s audience. What he should do is get featured, that way he can get a track and provide that sound over an already existing beat.

      1. What’s the difference between Premo “connecting” with todays audience and 9th Wonder “connecting” with today’s audience??

    3. OG is always in the lab with muhfuckas and yet his contributions are always left off the project…

    4. With today’s young audience not able to connect with his production, would it be in bad taste to now call him DJ Closing?

    5. He can make a new sound if he really wanted to.i wish he just drop unreleased project for left overs damn tracks

    6. Have to laugh at the clowns in the comments saying today’s audience don’t connect with Premiers sound – the same audience that listens to Migos and Lil Yachty, right? Premo is regarded as one of the greatest producers in Hip-Hop history – this is a fact – but some people would rather listen to these clowns mumble for four straight minutes. Personally, I’d rather get jacked off by Edward Scissorhands.

      1. Word homes. I am with u, 100%. Shout out, to Krs 1, Freddie Foxx, PE, NWA, Wu Tang, Blackalicious & all the real hip hop artists, still representing.

      1. I wouldn’t say he “denies” premier… his tracks just didn’t make the cut. I agree though, he is a perfectionist. I gotta respect that albeit he is signed to Dr Dre, he hasn’t ever had a Dre beat on his albums. The kid is super talented.

          1. he is signed to aftermath actually. it’s a joint deal with TDE. Interscope handles the distribution of his music. He’s definitely Dr. Dre’s artist. It was how DMX was with Ruff Ryders but was actually signed to Def Jam. Same thing here

    7. The songs probably didn’t make the cut just because they didn’t fit the concept that Kendrick was going with on this album….no need to overthink this sons

    8. Thats what happens when u use the same goddamn drums and arrangements from the last 20 years. Good for Kendrick. Premo’s shit is mad dated.

      1. Premo has maybe 6-8 different drumkits but his drums are like the hardest shit ever. So ehat if he uses the same drums? Half of these producers use 808s. And do you think that when a rock band is recording their album, they change the drums between every song? Let the man use the same fuckin drums.

      2. Says the clown who knows nothing about music production…but its cool for all these tight jean rappers to use the same wack ass synths and drums…FOH!!!

    9. Sucks that the tracks didn’t make the cut but knowing Preemo they’re probably dope as fuck and will be released on the next untitled unmastered.

    10. You people saying Primo isn’t relevant do realize that he kind of gets lots and lots of placements on straight pop albums these days, lol. So about his style being dated…..yeah, that’s bullshit. More than likely whatever he produced didn’t fit the concept of this album, which Kendrick obviously was aiming for it being more of a single cohesive unit along a certain direction. Because sorry, Soundwave or whoever was producing tracks for this album aren’t as good as Primo nor ever will be, so stop making yourselves sounds stupid by suggesting as such.

    11. listen, im a big gang starr and the whole foundation fan.. but think back. premos recent beats coming out have not been up to par. Its all opinion but i just want you to think. I could probably name a few joints in the last 5 years that I liked a lot. where as his beats used to give me goosebumps. Maybe ive changed, maybe premo is having a dry patch like he has before, then returned… maybe other reasons but I hope we hear something nice soon.

      1. We need that “PRhyme 2” album! First one was flames…that was the last dope Premo project IMO.

    12. Preemo working with m.c. eiht on a new one I believe those tracks will see the day of light

    13. DJ PREMIER IS GARBAGE . BOOM BAP IS DEAD .
NOBODY CHECKING FOR OLD DATED NAS BEATS FOH . NEW YORK HIP HOP DATED BEATS ARE DEAD .

        1. More like said Hiphop …. No-one buys boom bap music . Boom bap killed New York Hiphop .

    14. Exactly!!! I love Premos old shit but lets be real, everything that he’s made since the early early 2000’s had been wack, outdated and super basic
