Alchemist Declines Madlib Instagram Battle: ‘He Would Absolutely Destroy Me’

The Instagram Live beat battle between heavyweight producers Boi-1da and Hit-Boy on Friday (March 27) set social media on fire and caused many of its viewers including Timbaland and Swizz Beatz to discuss who got next.

Alchemist and TIDAL Chief Content Officer Elliott Wilson spoke about Instagram Live producers’ beat battles during an At Home With TIDAL interview via the same platform on Monday.

“I’m tuned in. I love a good skirmish. I love a good squabble,” Alchemist said as he and Wilson mutually laughed.

“It can be over anything, man. I like what’s going on. Obviously, it’s entertainment for us all to see everybody flexing like that. And it’s really a celebration at the end of the day.

“The showmanship is cool because that’s part of the art of battling. But really what’s being displayed is insane.”

After suggesting there should be battles on Instagram Live between veteran engineers Eddie Sancho and Ken “Duro” Ifill or longtime JAY-Z associate Young Guru, Wilson mentioned that instigators on social media have been buzzing for the LULU EP producer to face off against beat maestro extraordinaire Madlib.

Alchemist’s face became expressionless and conceded defeat to The Bad Kid without hesitation.

“Madlib would absolutely destroy me. Are you crazy, man? I ain’t going up against that man.” Alchemist said in a deadpan manner.

“Madlib is like my idol. That’s my brother, too. He’s in another planet on his own. He’s his own genre.”

Madlib scored Freddie Gibbs’ Bandana album, one of the only two albums which received a perfect rating from HipHopDX along with Rapsody’s EVE in 2019.

    1. I prefer madlib too, but I actually think Alc is selling himself short.

I feel like Alc’s style is more “accessible” to the masses and easier to digest. He has “bangers” and madlib is more left field with it but doper if you vibe on that wavelength…but most don’t

    2. Alc >>>>>% Madlib all day

Madlib been lazy af the last 5 year while Al been dropping classics. Griselda wouldn’t have made it this far without him either.

    3. fuck this heeeb and fuck his chosen peoples and fuck their stolen holy land.. you know they been kicked out of like 109 countries/nations so far in history , you know maybe, just maybe there’s a fuckin reason for that you know?

          1. There is a difference of opinion, then there is hating. I can’t think of anyone, who does things in the same genre, whose worst is better than anyone’s best. Hell, probably even the wack Cardi B’s best song is better than 2pac’s worst.

      1. Listen to The ALC Produced Prodigy albums Return of the Mac and Albert Einstein and then say that with a straight face..u gotta be a hater

    4. Madlib all the way, he can just take it different places.
Al would definitely make it hard but Madlib range is crazy.

    5. I hope beat making battles don’t go the route of rap battles cuz that’s the corniest nonsense I’ve ever seen. Let producers make beats in peace behind the scenes.

    6. Both are dope producers and both have some experimental wk that is not the best, but Madlib is way to diverse for Al especially with all these non drum beats that he uses all the time. Lootpack, Quasimoto, Kazi, Madvillain beats alone.

    7. The culture needs this. Would be a respectable bout between 2 of the best to ever do it. ALC might be the only one to make Madlib bring that heat out !

        1. Or he just so happens to prefer Uncle AL lol. Madlib is cool, versatile as fuck, but I’d take Al over his production as well.

    8. I fuck with both but Alchemist shouldn’t put his self down like that. But he’s probably just showing respect.
