Apoc celebrates his birthday with his first track of the year, “Master Swordsman,” which dropped yesterday (January 16).

The Filipino hip hop artist samples the 2003 film The Last Samurai in the intro, where Tom Cruise’s character, Nathan Algren, asks, “What does it mean to be Samurai? To devote yourself utterly to a set of moral principles. To seek a stillness of your mind. And to master the way of the sword.”

Written and produced by Apoc, “Master Swordsman” is rife with mythology, literary, and film references, including J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, and Superman, among many others.
