Keeping It Honest: Lil Wayne Is Now A Better Skateboarder Than Rapper

Keeping It Honest: Lil Wayne Is Now A Better Skateboarder Than Rapper

Watching the fall of Hip Hop’s self-proclaimed “Best Rapper Alive” has been cringe worthy in regards to 2015. Last year featured Lil Wayne making the shocking announcement about his stance with label home Cash Money following long delays of Tha Carter V. Fast forward to now, the New Orleans-native released one fairly solid album exclusively  through Tidal (for a short amount of time) through the Free Weezy Album and two flat out horrible mixtapes. Kicking off January with Sorry For The Wait 2, DX freelancer Eric Diep said Wayne’s “lackluster punchlines, and poor attempts at song remakes is an uneasy indicator that Tha Carter V might not be worth the wait after all.” Hurts more as No Ceilings 2 garners negative attention. Matter of fact, Charlamagne Tha God received backlash by YMCMB associate Jae Millz over his honest opinion over Twitter. Weezy’s historic run between 2005 and 2008 gave rap some of the best mixtapes of the era along with platinum-selling Tha Carter III. He even cultivated the eventual iconic careers of Drake and Nicki Minaj. Now, Mr. Dwayne Carter is a shadow of his former self despite making strides to rebuild himself. However, his passion for skateboarding has taken full control similar to Kanye West’s current lucrative distraction in fashion.

Remember the moment when watching Wayne struggle to land a basic ollie or switch stances on a vert ramp became social media comedy? Fast forward to the present, Lil Tunechi has gotten better with every bruise and injury. Weezy can perform kickflips, grinds and 180 ollies with an adequate proficiency. Could be similar to his fairly subpar material before Tha Carter. Helps that he’s also getting a fair amount of respect from those who actively engage in the sport. The inspiration for Trukfit came from his love of the alternative sport. Despite being dubbed the worst in the series, Wayne became a playable character in Tony Hawk 5. Sure, he’s not amazing yet, but several years down the line, he may have a shot at something. Then again, he’ll be around 40 getting closer and closer to the dreaded midlife crises. Maybe it’s time for Wayne to disappear into his hobby longer in hopes of gaining a new outlook on life. Surely that’ll help him re-energize the same spark noticeable on Free Weezy Album. Monday, he displayed his battle scars on Twitter via elbow shot with the caption “Skate Lyfe.” While the status of Tha Carter V is up in the air, Wayne seems in a very happy place past the label drama and inconsistent musical output. There’s a real reason he used his home skatepark as collateral in settling a dispute with a private jet company. With that in mind, take a look at some of Lil Weezyana’s recent skateboarding moments.

  1. He just needs to ditch the auto tune. Some of the songs on no ceilings 2 were ok. He really just hasn’t evolved. I feel like he’s the same as he was 8 years ago, which was fresh then. Still creative with his similes and metaphors .. And even though they’re sometimes cringe, they’ve always been. Flow is still on point no doubt.

  2. Man, i read these page for some time now, and i never comment. First because i’m a foreigner, second because many times i see just kids with nothing to do, just adding up to the pool of ignorance this site promotes. But the level of hate some of you “so called writers” spill in this shit is real man. So real i had to drop you some real talk here. Real like these man’s passion to do something else (skateboard), just for the sake of clearing his mind of these type of rap industry bullshit one has to go through. Won’t you feel ashamed for puttin’ your own fellow black man down like this. Shame on you Ural Garrett. I’m a 30 some year old african (born and raised) living in europe. It amazes me how you so called afro-americans put your fellow broda down. Specially you so called hiphop critics. I don’t see these happening in other cultures. They praise their OGs or at least are greateful for the lifes spent on this shit we call hiphop. Something we all say that we all love. I’ve been a journalist and worked as a professional in the media, but cats like you are what made me don’t wanna make part of these flock of failed sour mothafuckas with a pen (excuse me, with an ipad) and a license to assassinate a carachter. I’m old school and wayne was never my favourite artist. Although i respect his craft. I mean…i grew up with wu-tang and ’em, so you make your calculations. But i would never put a broda down like this. Shame on you man. Shame on you. Police killing your own kind, brothers killing eachother, this broda going through a lot and you take this cheap shot at him with your “editorial power”. Rhyme something man. Hell man, even produce a beat let us critic. And btw don’t think i don’t produce or spit. I will wipe you out in your own language. You guys need to wake up and be Man (capital M, baby). Not animals with a voice. Misused voices in these case. English is not my native language but i guess i could do your job, for so many gramatical errors and nonsense you let pass through in this site. You sir have an agenda and i can see through it. I knew many like you in my radio years. I pitty them…and you now. Say you sorry and choose a new route man. That’s my advice. Try to uplift your people with the power you have, not bring them down. Wayne is human like all of us. Let the man breathe. That’s what he trying to do with that board. Breathe fresh air, and not poluted industry air.

    1. I made “grammatical” errors while trying to make my point, and i apologize to those reading. But again i am not a native English speaker, nor am I an EDITOR or writer on “this” website. Otherwise, i would correct those errors, as a professional should. Have a good day, sir.

    2. It’s not that serious bro… I can see where you are coming from but lets face it Wayne and the power that he has, really hasn’t represented for his community either. There is really no substance to his music where you can really get something from it, lets be real. This is the same cat that straight up promotes the Bloods but has put in no work or has done anything to steer those brothers in the right direction.

    3. I feel you too on that point my man. I am not in USA, so i can’t claim to see what you guys see there, “in locco”. But sometimes we must think what these rap dudes go through, to get where they are, or to stay where they are. I don’t think we know all about that. Only they know. The gang affiliations sometimes are inevitable situations (i don’t agree with gangbangin and killing eachother BTW) for these industry dudes. For example to have no problems while they go perform on other places. Protection, extorsion, u name it. These shits happen and sometimes rap dudes are not wise enough or not detached fromt the streets enough to make the best decisions. Sometimes that’s the only decision they can make…take the affiliation to that gang or be watching your back everytime you go perform in a strange “turf”. I am a student of hiphop for 20 some years, and i can see the pattern. Like from an outside looking in perspective. Because again, i don’t know what make a man affiliate himself with Gang A or B. But from the things we seen through the years, gangbangin is an american problem, not a rap problem. It spilled into rap, becuase they are all products from the “so called hood”. What i mean is, i feel ya point. But let’s call the brother out on that, in a positive way. Specially if you are the EDITOR of a hiphop magazine. This type of “writers” is what opens the door for sites like TMZ and them to bash hiphop artists and water down the culture. These “editors” are the same cheering when your “Bobbys” make a hot song about “catching bodies”…but then turning on them as quick as they praised them. What i am saying is hiphop need serious journalists. People who love the culture and do their best to uplift. Criticize, but to uplift. Like Sway, Davey D…and son on. Those are the standards i looked up too, when i was doing radio back in my country. Guys like that helped me understand and feel part of hiphop, miles away from where it started. What these “so called writers” and “so called editors” are doing now is nothing but following the trend instead of setting them. And i take an editorial as a serious thing, because it’s supposed to convey the point of view of the lead journalist in that media publishing. It’s supposed to talk about something serious, to the culture or public it’s aimed at. With an “editorial” like this (when your brothers and sisters are gettin’ murdered daily by the hand of the american police, and your government and europe are propellin’ a WW3 teasing Russia using Turkey and other puppet states) in this dreadful times, it shows you how people you think should be leaders are nothing but followers. An editor is supposed to lead, not joke with his position. But again, i feel you and many of these rappers need to step up and speak for the communities. And demand respect from suckers calling themselves critics of this culture.

    4. I feel you my dude! I can’t tell you really apart of the culture, especially giving props to the Pioneer Davey D. I just don’t respect Lil Wayne and what he represents. He is from New Orleans and Bloods are just recent to that region, that was never their thing. It’s like OG Bone said, “I don’t want to change the gang, I just want to change the direction of the Gang”. With all of the influence Wayne has all he has done is sorta be a marketing pitchman for the gang and doesn’t offer the reality.

  3. he skates worse than a 12 year old and i never seen him do 1 kick flip, and a vert ramp is something he would never go near, he likes them like 4-5 footers

  4. That is the laziest skating I have ever seen. Maybe he could jump if he pulled his pants up. He must be going through a midlife crisis. The fake ass screams from those fake ass people after he does a “trick” are just riding his dick for his cash.

  5. Hr did drugs and lost his mind. And then he beefed with birdman and signed with jay z. Jay z got low key beef with lil wayne. If lil wayne ever drops a record, jayz will eat off lil wayne. Its chess to jay z.

  6. So Urinal says Wayne should hang up the Mic and just continue skating because of one bad mixtape?. Yeah…. you just went Full Retard. You are the same guy that defended Iggy. DX cannot be taken serious with black Nazi Trolls like Urinal. You dont know shit about Hip Hop, go write about Techno. And this is a white man telling youthis.

    1. I wouldn’t even consider Wayne a hip-hop artist tho. Seems you both don’t know shit about that real hip-hop.

  7. I was never a Wayne fan. I personally always felt he had ghostwriters helping him with all of his hits and I always felt he was more gimmick and less genuine personality. (Like Rick Ross, The Game, Drake) So of course some people are not gonna feel his new projects because he doesn’t have the resources to pay someone to help him make commercial hits. That being said, Urinal seems to be a bandwagon type of fan/ critic. When the artist gets a lot of exposure then that person is the best but if they are not getting aggressive exposure then he will think they can have okay hits but it’s nothing special. I love hiphop and I love coming on this site to see if I can hear something new from some of my favorite artist. I do not come to this site for Urinal, I already felt he was out of touch with true hiphop. So I don’t get shocked anymore when that kid writes his crazy articles.

  8. Glory was the craziest song of the year Lyrically!
    And his verse on M’s…
Hip Hop DX just stay riding the documentry 2 hahahahah

  9. Really? Who ever wrote this needs to have their writing privileges taken way as their music opinion is shit. Lol. His best work was with Manny Fresh and he left CMB in 05. That nigga had fallen completely off by 08. Hustler Musik isn’t his best song, what is? Amilli? No. No.

  10. Keeping it honest the shit Wayne does now that fans complain about is how he rapped when he was proclaimed as the greatest rapper ever by them. Seriously, go back and listen to his mixtapes people put on a pedestal and the lyrics and rapping ain’t that much different. He was decent for a very short time around C1-LFLS before he became a punchline joke rapper.

  11. DX writers arecsome bandwagoners. Its ‘cool’ to hate on wayne now. NC2 is decent. Eventhough the autotune is overbearing at some points, his flow and lyrics are on point. It has too many beats drake already killed also. But overall its cool if u pay attention to the lyrics. This man has nothing left to prove. He only does it for the fans and I enjoyed it as a fan even though I expected it to be way better. He raised the bar so high for himself. If NC2 was from one of these new cats, y’all will be dickriding. I bet most of y’all hating haven’t really listened to the tape. Let the man live.. .. He’s your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper

  12. You guys know nothing about skateboarding obviously… Lil wayne isn’t even remotely good at skating… he literally just rolls off of shit… and that fuckin dweeb had the balls to say “in one year I’ll be the best skater ever” ??? it’s been 3, how’s your Ollie coming along ?
