Sometimes Hip Hop can move at a pace too frantic for even the most devoted fan to keep up with. Albums and mixtapes are released at breakneck speed, careers are made and broken with the swipe of a pen, and somewhere in between all the madness actual music (the quality of which vacillates between excellent and god awful) is being made. Twitter provides a nice summary of everything 140 characters at a time. And if you’re the type that would rather not be bothered with stepping into the Twitterverse to catch up on the latest in Hip Hop, we’ve filtered through the top rapper’s tweets and consolidated all the week’s events into one convenient feed.
This week, the 86th Academy Awards took center stage, ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron album became a trending topic and Styles P waits with baited breath for the final episode of HBO’s True Detective. Check the rest of the week’s top tweets below.
Arby’s Buys Pharrell’s Hat
Before he hit the Academy Awards stage to perform “Happy” in front of Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep on Sunday night, Pharrell took a moment to tweet a thank you to the eBay user who purchased his hat for $44,100. Emoji prayer hands express gratitude, by the way. Little did we (and he) know that the eBay user who purchased the Canadian Mountie was none other that user arbysrestaurantgroup aka Arby’s! Those sneaky do-gooders managed to continue their coincidental marketing plot and donate to Pharrell’s non-profit From One Hand To AnOTHER.

Questlove Travoltifies Childish Gambino’s Name
Nothing wild ever happens at the Oscars, but John Travolta epically messing up a singer’s name as he introduced her to the Academy Awards audience iced the cake. Her name is Idina Menzel but Travolta changed it to Adele Dazeem which confirms that he’s from the planet Travoltia. You’ve heard of the Wu-Tang name generator? Well, Slate whipped up a The Adele Dazeem Name Generator and Questlove threw in Donald Glover’s Wu-Tang name Childish Gambino for the sake of science. The Travoltified version turned out to be more mellow, Christian Gonzaleez, but still, name generators are fun.

Rick Ross Peforms On Night Of “Mastermind” Release
Album out? Check. Performing on the night your album drops? Yep. Rick Ross hit up Best Buy Theater in New York City to celebrate the release of “Mastermind” and to entertain his loyal army of fans. You didn’t have to be in attendance to feel included since Def Jam’s twitter had the play-by-play. Judging from the picture, it looked like one hell of a night.
ScHoolboy Q & Kid Cudi Buy Each Other’s Albums
If you can’t beat them, join them. Kid Cudi was in a positive mindset when he tweeted ScHoolboy Q, “congrats on an epic release brotha!” Cudi included a screenshot of his iTunes purchase of Oxymoron. This week in album Hip Hop sales, Q took the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 with his debut album, Oxymoron, selling around 139,000 in its first week. Kid Cudi landed at #4 with his quietly released a-la-BEYONCE album, SATELLITE FLIGHT: The journey to Mother Moon selling over 87,000 copies in its first week. Q returned the favor, tweeting Cudi back with a screenshot of him purchasing Cudi’s album directly on his smartphone.

Lord Jamar Sends Shots At Marlon Wayans
It was a mundane Friday until comedian/actor Marlon Wayans stirred up some trouble by tweeting Lord Jamar, “u wearing an invisible dress.” Lord Jamar isn’t one to stay quiet so he immediately wrote back, “And this coming from a nigga who wore a VISIBLE DRESS? Lmao.” The Twitter jabs that followed included mentions of Lugz, Timberlands and Enyce. Then it turned to insulting using real people to compare the other person to. Hope Jabori and Stepin Fetchit (RIP) don’t get too upset. It’s just Twitter beef, after all.
Dilated Peoples Finish “Directors Of Photography”
With a nod from Alchemist, Evidence shares that Dilated Peoples is ready to release their upcoming album, Directors Of Photography. In an exclusive interview with HipHopDX, Rakaa revealed that, “They’re not trying to exercise or stroke their own ego. They’re really trying to achieve something greater. So, when you’re an artist and you have conflicting opinions, there’s always going to be tension. If you care enough to be honest, you’re not going to always agree. We care enough to be honest so we’re definitely not gonna always agree, but we make great music.” We’re ready to hear some of the great music soon.
