Diddy and Jermaine Dupri engaged in a war of words after the Bad Boy Records mogul said his only worthy Verzuz opponent was Dr. Dre during the Fat Joe and Ja Rule event earlier this month. Dupri offered to step in the arena instead, but Diddy scoffed at the notion, saying, “Your arms are too short to box with God.”
But the So So Def founder insists he has the one thing Diddy can’t buy. During a recent interview with V-103 in Atlanta, he reminded everyone he’s a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, which makes him more than a suitable match for Mr. Puff Daddy.
“Let me say this to y’all, everybody, be clear,” Dupri said before telling the hosts to stop the music. “I just want to make sure everybody understands this. I am in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. I am in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Puff Daddy’s not in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Steve Stoute and the Trackmasters are not in the Hall of Fame.”
He added, “Me, Dallas Austin, JAY-Z and Missy Elliott—when it comes to songwriting—I am in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. I shouldn’t have to play nothing. .. I am in a seat that Puff Daddy can’t pay for. You have to write songs, and as far as I’m concerned, as far as I’m concerned, I don’t know if he’ll ever get in that club.”
Jermaine Dupri was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018. The North Carolina-born, Atlanta-raised artist’s first hit came in 1992 with Kriss Kross’ “Jump.” Over the last 30 years, he’s penned numerous chart-topping singles, including Usher’s “My Boo” featuring Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey’s “Don’t Forget About Us” and Monica’s “The First Night.”
Dupri’s induction marked only the second time a Hip Hop artist has been given the honor. Shortly after the inductees were announced, he shared a Twitter video with the caption, “I can’t fucking believe this!!”
He added in the clip, “Man, look at god, look at god, look at god. Yo I was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. I don’t know what else to say, but ahhhhhh!”
Meanwhile, Diddy remains defiant. During a conversation with Fat Joe and Snoop Dogg last week, Diddy and Dupri playfully argued about who would emerge victorious if they were to go head-to-head.
“I’m not here to play,” Diddy said. “You amnesia having muthafuckas. I done gave ya’ll life for 20 years of music. You know what I’m saying? Anything I touched, anything I breathed on, executive produced, anything I thought up, anything I fuckin’ did whatever. You hear me? Don’t play with me boy.”
Diddy then proceeded to play snippets some of his biggest hits, including “Who Shot Ya?” by The Notorious B.I.G. and “Real Love” by Mary J. Blige.
But Dupri, however, wouldn’t fire back with any of his own. Instead, he told Diddy, “Sign the paperwork. Fuck what you’re doing in the backyard.”
So far, Verzuz co-founders Swizz Beatz and Timbaland haven’t made anything official — at least not yet.
He straight up flexed on Diddy lol
No damn WAY he has ANY place in a verzus against Dre. Not even sure on what grounds puffy wants to be in a verzus for- label boss? executive producer? a&r? Puff is such a damn narcissus. When it comes to JD, they’re not even comparable- Dupri is an actual producer; (who also ran his own successful label), puff just takes credit for other peoples’ work. If it came to playing hip-hop joints released on your label/that you had “something” to do with, yeah puff would emerge victorious.. but again on what grounds. Is puff a (former) hitmaker? Sure.. but dude is better suited for a verzus against someone like Khaled.
Nothing but Factz
I really want verzuz to go away already. If you want to cement your legacy, keep making hits. Fuck the age BS the young people are stuck on. Let them have their teenage rappers.
you go away!
Diddy, Steve Stoute, Berry Gordy, Tommy Silverman, Birdman, and Ronald Williams all belong in the Sodomite Hall of Fame. No collection of men has violated more record contracts and rectums them this collective.
Diddy is a one hit wonder. I‘ll be missing you. That’s it. The other songs he‘ll play are from other artists. Dre can hold his own. Jermaine…idk
After Jermaine Dupri’s savage hall of fame statement to shutdown Diddy, JD is actually the one without a worthy opponent!
