TDE Executives Provide Kendrick Lamar & Black Hippy Album Release Info

Top Dawg Entertainment heads Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith, Dave Free and Terrence "Punch" Henderson update the public on numerous projects soon to be released within the TDE camp including a Black Hippy album.

Any activity happening at any time in the Top Dawg Entertainment camp usually makes its way into the news cycle in one way or another.

Covering Billboard's March issue, TDE members Kendrick Lamar and SchoolBoy Q talked about how they created their own success in music via their label. One of the label's bosses, Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith dropped some info on already speculated rumors and more specifics in regards to previous announcements he made.

Tiffith told Billboard that both recent signees, New Jersey songstress SZA and Chattanooga, Tennessee rapper Isaiah Rashad are expected to release debut label albums this year. Ab-Soul and Jay Rock are also expected to drop LPs. Perhaps the biggest news that came from the interview however was the announcement of what is supposed to happen this September–the release of Kendrick Lamar's sophomore studio album. Top Dawg also indicated that Black Hippy as a group could be releasing a joint album in 2014, which comes as a surprise as Ab-Soul told Hip Hop Wired in 2012 that such an album would "never, ever" come to fruition.

"Today is probably more important than when good kid, m.A.A.d city came out," TDE co-president Dave Free told Billboard. "This is our proving ground to show the world that wasn't a fluke - that TDE isn't just one artist. Kendrick isn't the only one in our stable that's going to blow up."

Previously, Top Dawg Entertainment relayed that SZA's album would be "coming soon" via Twitter. A Kendrick Lamar album was rumored to be slated for release in 2014 but had no specifics on when that would be. The same goes for albums from Ab-Soul and Jay Rock. Top Dawg also said back in December that there would be six TDE albums released in 2014.

Yesterday (February 28), it was announced that ScHoolboy Q is expected to land in the #1 spot on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart. Oxymoron, ScHoolboy's major label debut album, which was released on February 25, may sell between 150,000 and 160,000 copies by the end of the tracking week, according to reports. The official numbers are set to be announced March 5.

  • RHX

Sick to death of this 'TDE' shit. Whys this 'top dawg' always coming out smackin his gums like some kind of wwe general manager or something. They can speak for themselves, he like a referee that wants the attention in the game. I really don't look at these guys as much of a group anyway, they'll make their name solo.

  • phuture

I think TDE is making a really big mistake in fact they are making the same mistake that 50 cent made with g-unit. why are you pushing kendricks album back to put out oxymoron, ab soul and the rest of the roster ?,when its clear that Kendrick needed at least a single out right around the grammys and the macklemore controversy. 50 cent did the same thing he released lloyd banks, tony yayo, game and young buck before he released his second album by the time his second album came around the energy shifted to less aggressive music with the college dropout(kanye West). You don't see Cash money pushing back Drake and Nicki minaj so that Gudda,Lil twist etc can get hot. by the time all those artist release their album and the black hippy album comes out kendrick lamars buzz will small.

Why are idiots on HipHopDX comparing Black Hippy to old school acts like Wu-Tang? They are incomparable at this point, they need to make their mark first.

  • Anonymous

Roots shit 10 times and the HIPPIES

  • Anonymous

Black Hippy is an OVERRATED rapgroup. Wu-Tang, Tribe, Public Enemy and Juice Crew shit on THEM! Black Hippy Is GOOD but stop sucking Black hippy DICK you youngstas

    • Anonymus

^^^ You brought up having a Wu cd like a white racist claiming to have a black friend. Black Hippie got their whole concept off of Wu except in reverse were the Wu came out as a group first then the solo acts, BH is going solo acts first then the group album. Don't get me wrong BH is dope as hell they're talented but they will never be better than Wu talentwise or will make a bigger impact.

    • Anonymous

I do know my history, and I got my Wu-Tang Forever copy sitting right next to me. I just think Kendrick and Soul are more talented than anyone in Wu-Tang. Not to disrespect Wu though.

    • RHX

^^^ More talented than wu-tang? That might just be the dumbest thing I've heard anyone say all year. Get ur head out of tde's ass and u might be able to see the truth fool. U clearly don't know your history.

    • Anonymous

Black Hippy has more talent than all of those groups, and Kendrick already has 2 classics under his belt. Ab-Soul has an incredible album, Isaiah Rashad has a really solid project. We'll have to see if they continue their success, but I doubt they'll be falling off any time soon.

    • Poetic Ju$tin

You can't compare those groups with Black Hippy. They are all groups that made their mark in Hip Hop and are legends. Black Hippy doesn't even have an album yet. They will be one of the great groups of our generation, but as of now it's unfair to compare them to groups like Wu-Tang.

Kendrick Lamar: Single handedly bringing the REAL Hip-Hop back!

  • mrstealYObitch

once again, "kendrick lamar & black hippy".. you know TDE hates when they label them that way, their all seperate artist.

  • killaz

This album will go down as one of the best albums of all time for any genre just like Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready to Die and the other rap albums that are considered the best of all time. When those albums came out we didn't understand how great they because were very young at the time. Now we have a chance to witness a classic and a legend in the making. The storytelling is amazing. It's like a movie. You can't just listen to a couple of songs or skip through. You have to listen straight through from beginning to end.

  • Em

listening to Kendrick's album really makes the other albums sound alot more like mixtapes

  • a

Pac died at 25. Kendrick starts to carry the throne at 25 should be some good years to come

  • trlsf

    Only classics under their belt

  • Fgggqg

THIS IS HIP-HOP, play your rap somewhere else

  • genoo

This crew is ahead of its time. Perfection from start to finish. The best hip-hop crew since WU TANG

  • Fribberg

can he top gkmc ? Amazing album. When I listen to it, it was more than music, it was a story of a person just like me with dreams, fear, dangers, trouble, happiness, adolescence and maturity. He stayed true to his roots he kept it original but different. God bless Kendrick Lamar and hip hop.

  • Spawnnnz

Kendrick gonna renegade the game again

One of the best Crews I ever heard!! Point Blank!!

  • azertt

not a fan of them but objectively, they're the best rapperess of the last 6 years.

  • gn

Need GKMC part 2... I havent heard an album like this in a GOOD minute. I will actually purchase this rather than download it. If hip hop artist pumped out more stuff like this, labels could move units like it was '98.

  • joey

in for another classic from kednrick lamar

    black hippy, best crew ever

"Well ya, all members of black hippy are better than yayo but lets face it other members wrote yayos lyrics and he brought the deep loud killer voice to a couple tracks on the album, like I said I see it like G-units first album with better lyrics. track making wise, g-unit made some good songs. Of course, I could be wrong and they go harder like an old Wu album" Black Hipster are a 4 man crew but they will never be as great as Bone Thugs, they are more like Pharcyde, but not as good as a Goodie Mob. They want to be Souls of Mischeif mixed with NWA but it wont happen. Ice Cube>>>Kendrick Eazy>>>>>Jay Rock MC ReN>>>Ab Soul Dr Dre>>>>Schoolboy Q Schoolboy does drugs and and has violent lyrics with no substance so I prefer K Dot and Ab Soul.

  • Anonymous

im ready for Jay Rock, he has a lot to prove still. This album will either make him blow up or will establish who the real weak link is. Ab soul better go hard too. Kendrick and Schoolboy setting the bar with bars.

    • Anonymous

Schoolboy isn't setting any bar with his bars lol he's clearly the weakest in the group lyrically. Jay Rock is a monster on most of his features but his solo work isn't as good so we'll see what happens. I have high hopes though.

  • Anonymous

"Oxymoron has a Metacritic score of 80, that's far from mixed reviews" Usually I'd disagree, but 80 for an official debut is pretty solid.

  • Marc

Hip Hop DX y'all just as bad as these other sites and magazines... It's not Kendrick Lamar and Black Hippy, it's just Black Hippy. Quit acting like he the lead singer of a band or something...

    • Anonymous

can you not read? they are referring to the new kendrick album and then a possible black hippy project.

  • JOEY

Only anticipating the album from the king (Kendrick) and the one from Rock.

  • azerty

just need kendrick, keep the rest

will buy kendrick without even listening to it, I believe him.

  • Pat

I just want the ab-soul album

  • jay

    rock still on strange?

Sweeet! Black Hippy, Kendrick, and Isaiah album this year this gonna be great.

Kendrick is the only marketable artist on TDE, the Schoolboy guy is nothing special and Jay Rock is a bore, and Ab Soul is just an oddball. Slaughterhouse raps circles around these west coast nerds.

    • Sam Snead

@SamSneed Please dont compare TDE to a group with Tony Yayo in it. Dont be fooled by Schoolboy Qs numbers, he is riding the hype known as Kendrick Lamar, the reviews of his album have been mixed so it wont be a must cop for people keeping him on the charts.

    • Sam Snead

The black hippy album won't get fucked up by their boss though, it has potential kind of thinking it will be like G-units first album but a little more lyrical

    • Anonymous

150k first week sounds marketable enough to me
