Much like the real John “Teflon Don” Gotti himself, Rick Ross has been able to maneuver around personal pitfalls throughout the last five years without his career suffering an abrupt ending. This same resiliency has subsequently allowed us to anticipate new material from the rapper rather than write it off with questionable expectations. Still, despite three albums and a handful of notable hit records, Ross has yet to put forth a full length project that truly defines his legacy within Hip Hop. With his latest effort, Teflon Don, the Floridian takes on the task of solidifying his status while balancing out appreciation from fans and critics alike.
Ross has always had a great ear for beats as evident on Port Of Miami and Deeper Than Rap, yet the illustrious production done for Teflon Don may be his best selections yet. “Maybach Music III” 
continues the series by collaborators J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, who this time around trade in their beat machines for a full orchestral composition that is undeniably excellent. Taking a rock-tinged route, Ross and Jay-Z use “Free Mason” as a way to compare their grandiose demeanor to that of the alleged occult organization. Denouncing his rumored affiliation, Hov rhymes, “It’s amazing that I made it through the maze that I was in / Lord forgive me I never would have made it without sin / Holy water, my face in the basin / Diamonds in my rosary shows he forgive him.” Of course, Ricky Rozay would be in violation without the addition of a street-anthem on his new disc. Rightfully so, the bass-heavy banger “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” from new-coming producer Lex Luger fills the void perfectly as Ross and Styles P trade motivational bars about living life in a different tax bracket.
Although Rick Ross doesn’t necessarily come across as the introspective type, he elicits confessional time with “Tears Of Joy” . Over soulful production from No I.D. that begins with a short-but-warranted audio clip of Bobby Seales reciting Huey P. Newton’s definition of “power,” Ross attempts to put his successful life into perspective. “All The Money In The World” treads similar territory as he touches on his fathers passing. Opening up on the personal tragedy that occurred 10 years ago, he says, “I can hear my daddy saying, ‘Lil’ nigga go get em’ / Passed in ‘99, cancer all in his liver / Shit, difference since we last spoke your son a little richer / I’d never rap again if I could tell him that I miss him.” Still, even with a heavy heart and concerned conscious Ross throws caution to the wind as he celebrates the fruits of his labor with Kanye West on “Live Fast, Die Young” . Making a strong comeback since last year’s MTV Music Awards incident, ‘Ye confidently raps, “I’m back by unpopular demand / At least we still poppin’ in Japan / Shopping in Milan, hopping out the van, screams from the fans / ‘Yeezy always knew you’d be on top again!’”
Ross does get side-tracked at times by catering to other featured guests on his album. Case in point: his collaborative record “No. 1” with Dream Team brethren Diddy. While the record’s high energy vibe could find its way booming out of club sound systems, the actual performance comes off as contrived and uninspired. Also, it’s rarely the occasion that a Diddy verse (“First one to write a check in an earthquake / Same motherfucker that’ll make the earth shake”) will enhance your record. Slowing down the tempo, “Aston Martin Music” rides in as an ode to the ladies. Willing his hoarse voice to fit the lush production provided by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Ross inevitably takes a back seat to hook contributors Chrisette Michele and Drake.
Aside from an atrocious guest appearance from Gucci Mane on “MC Hammer,” Teflon Don flows thoroughly well. Lyrically, Ross hasn’t progressed since Deeper Than Rap. With that said, he has found a way to incorporate more into his music without compromising his mission as evidenced by a shortened track list and less dependency on tall tales about cocaine dreams. Ross prominently references his desire to become a “larger than life” figure, and in due time that characterization may be fulfilled. For now though, making quality music at a respectable rate will do just fine.

Album is hot, I think it’s one of his better efforts. I heard most of the album prior with song leaks, while the songs are great it didn’t do justice to my first impression of the actual album considering it’s only 11 songs and I had already heard 8 of the 11. Now the album as a whole flows great, the only song I don’t care for is #1 with trey songz and diddy. I also think they could of did without Gucci on MC Hammer, that song by with just Ross was a beast in it’s own and Gucci’s verse dropped the quality of it a notch (I like Gucci he just didn’t work on the song).
Still not a fan of these shorter albums cause it’s a few songs that would of been great additions that aren’t on the final cut, but this is a great example of how to have a great album with quality over quantity

I agree, Ross has a good ear for beats, and his production is usually on point. With that said, the whole drug kingpin bravoda is played out, and no one really buys its. I like the production value though, but Ross’s persona just comes off as fake and made up to me.

It’s real hard to give Rick Ross a legit rating seeing I’m already so biased against him but I’ll try. I tried to compare him to Nas(my favourite MC) where Nas calls himself Nas Escobar. But really I couln’t, while rappers have been stretching the truth for a long time, no rapper has ever called themselves a drug king pin then found out to be a prison officer. I understand the man had to eat, and a man that big eats alot. But it’s a massive blow on his music, albums and his whole career. Unless you like his flow and voice you won’t really like his album, so thats another blow for me. He no doubt has an ear for beats, I’d rather rather listen to his instrumentals then him to spit the truth, he’s feature heavy so most the talent you come across on this album isn’t even his. I can’t give it a bad rating becuase the album isn’t bad and I can’t give it a good rating becuase it isn’t that good, Rick Ross has barely any quotables or verses that hit you and make you think “Dammmn this mother fucker is off the chain” but it’s reasonably solid. I wouldn’t recomend this to anyone but I wouldn’t advise against it. It’s just got a neutreul feeling.

this is an album i just had to pipe in on. im not like a huge rick ross fan or anything ive listened to all of his albums though and semi enjoyed all of them. however something has to be said about this masterpeice of an album. lyrically its crazy and yed the beats our good as well. but u know what he picked those beats. beats are always shopped around to multiple people which means rappers had an oppurtunity to take them and they didnt. ross took them and made great songs and a great over all album. i bought it on itunes and i strogly recommend that you do the same

Short Review:
I would like to say that if there were more tracks, less features and more consistency this album would get a perfect 5. Songs like “Maybach Music III”, “Freemason”, and “Live Fast…” are standout tracks. Production and lyrics are great on those 3 tracks by both: features and Mr. Ross, however the album as a whole does not completely feel the same. Still a very solid album and i recommend people give this one a listen.

The album is pretty dope. Not classic, but dope. The last Classic albums to hit the scene were Lupe Fiasco’s “Food & Liquor” and Common’s “Be”. Flawless works. Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter 2” was pretty close to being a classic. Yes people, I said it. “Carter 2” was an almost classic.

Hot beats, shit lyrics. Ross relies too much on guest appearances to basically carry his ass through. This is an ok album, but you gotta have good beats AND good lyrics to have a CLASSIC album. Ross has the money to buy good production and guests, but money cant buy you lyrical skills.

Let’s get real here. Rick Ross known for being a lyrical giant or anything like that. He has a occasionally punch line. The fact still remains this album is a must listen. Lyrically yes it’s a 5 star album at best, but the end product is really really good. Fantastic for riding around, and letting the sub woofer cut loose. The best thing about the album is there is only 11 tracks which means it’s short and to the point. Ross went with a very uncommon approach towards the beginning of the album. He starts if off slow and the albums momentum picks up as it goes along. Uncommon, but a very very good method it turns out. This being my first rick album I am satisfied with what I have. Music for a ground shaking ride down the street. Something I can bop my head to for days. Hip Hop should be about more than who rhymes the best. It’s about good music, and this is great music.

Go to RIAA.com and search to see who’s really moving units. Pac went 9x with AEOM, Big went Diamond (10x) with LAD, Jay went 5x with HKL. 4x platinum puts you in SUPERSTAR status. Star status is 1x-3x, this is not R&B in the 60’s-80’s where having a GOLD RECORD means something.
Look man i dont like ross much either but your basis for a hip-hop superstar being album sales is just plain stupid. some GREAT artists have sold heaps and gone platinum sure, but that is not the only criteria for a superstar.. talib, royce and even nas may never do those kind of numbers but they are still superstars in the eyes of hip-hops true followers
