Young Chris Deflects Speculation That Jay-Z Stole His Rhyme Pattern

When a rapper steals lyrics from a peer, to some it epitomizes one of music’s highest transgressions. After Consequence accused labelmate Pusha T of plagiarism, fans flocked to his side, many denouncing Pusha for blatantly stealing lyrics. Of course, it was later revealed that Cons’ accusations were highly exaggerated and far-fetched, but still highlighted the disdain Hip Hop listeners have for stealing lyrics.

Plagiarism is one thing, but swagger-jacking is another. On Tuesday, former Roc-A-Fella artist Young Chris commented – not for the first time – on speculation that Jay-Z stole not his lyrics, but his flow.

“Yeah I hear [speculation],” he told Meet Tha Dealer. “I don’t really indulge in it but I hear it though. We were all around each other [in the studio] so that shit rubs off on each other. We took from everybody. Everybody took from each other. I always say steel sharpens steel and that’s what I mean [and] that’s what defines that.”

A year ago, State Property member Peedi Crakk boldly commented on the similarities between Jay and Chris’ rhyme pattern.

“I want to clarify that [Jay] doesn’t steal anyone’s songs,” Peedi said. “He steals swag, ideas, concepts… Jay doesn’t just straight up jack you for a song, he’s smooth with it. You ever listen to Young Chris rap and then go back and listen to Jay? You almost start to scratch your head. The old Jay-Z never rapped like that… Jay has no swag of his own.”

However, Young Chris explained that people’s feeling about this controversy are arbitrary and shift back and forth.

“I don’t really get into that. [Jay’s] my man. People say I took his shit. A few weeks back they was saying I sound like Jay-Z, but years down the line they’re like, ‘Oh hold on, maybe [Jay-Z] took his shit!'”

Young Chris also speaks on his feelings about the Jay-Z and Nas beef.

    1. Didn’t they already interview him on this? Anyway Jay-Z obviously took his style just like he took Tupac, Biggie, Slick Rick, etc. lyrics. Nobody really seems to care though.

      1. that’s the funny part about it. Nobody & I mean nobody ever call him out on this shit. He could spit a whole Big verse & act like it’s his. He always takes lines from other rappers & don’t get called out.

    2. I would def agree that jay is a jacker of concepts. He’s borrowed heavily from Big L and Biggie some times straight up lines, some times just the ideas

    3. Damn. It just seems like this story gets thrown up eaten and then thrown up again to be eaten again.

    4. JAY-Z NEVER STOLE ANYONE STYLE. EVERY COUPLE YEARS WE ALL CHANGE….ITS LIFE,,,,,,,AND YOU GUYS SHOULD GET A LIFE.

      1. Yeah killer J just jacks lyrics from all the best emcees…then claims he is the best time and time again… J could never be GOAT since he is one of the least original MCs of all time… and you talk about changes? J went from near classic status [black album] to straight garbage [Kingdom Come] to average 40 yr old coke raps [AG] to 808s inspired pop bullshit [BP3; YOUNG FOREVER WOW]… J should have stayed retired/on vacation recovering from that napalm bomb that GODSON dropped on him
        ONE

      2. @comachonvargas
I 100 percent agree with you. The guy as proven to be a real snake through his caeer and a reel folower of trends, that not what being a GOAT is all about

    5. Artists are happy to aid in ones creative expression when they in the circle. Then go bitch about it once the relationships all washed up.

It’s rare to find any artist that is just one entity these days.

Look at how Kanye writes for his albums these days.

People like Peedi who all bitter just try and use this as another stick to beat Jay with.

In the end Jay is one of the best to pick up the mic.

Name me an artist that isn’t inspired by other artists.

    6. Yall gon see , jay gon holla at chris for some collabo shit ,. dis nigga da only loyal dude next ta bleek, Fuck yall beans dick suckers

    7. This makes zero sense. It’s like saying Jordan stole Harold Miner’s style. This is some ignorant shit. Jay would jack Young Chris’ swagger??? What fucking swagger? Has this little nigga gone double wood yet? Does he even have ONE album? Get the fuck outta here!

And for fools saying Jay stole Biggie and Big L lyrics, Jay says these lines to pay homage – just like EVERY rapper has used a Slick Rick lyric, a Fantastic Four lyric or a Rakim lyric. Get a brain. Damn!

      1. GTFO!! You don’t have sell platinum for anyone to steal your style. The mainstream always steals from the underground. Get your facts straight!

      2. You dumb cunt, Chris was mainstream at one point as well. Your baseless argument is flawed.

    8. Someone once brought this to my intention, when I use to think that it was the other way around. I thought Young chris took from jay, but if you listen to Jay-z volume 3 life and times of shawn carter and then blueprint 1, he did change style a bit. And 2001 was around the time Young Chris came into the scene. Or it just be a coincedence.

    9. Gay-Z is the biggest swagger jacker in hip-hop history. This guy has stolen tons and tons of lyrics, flows, ideas, concepts, etc.

    10. Listen to you clowns, saying Jay steals swag or w/e.

Stop for a second, breathe and take a good look at the man who’s telling you this.

      PEEDI CRACK.

Don’t you feel dumb now? You’re listening to some washed-up rapper that got dropped because he sucks. And you’re listening to what he’s saying? Fuck outta here, all of you.

I swear, I think I’m the only smart one on this site sometimes.

    11. Yall niggaz comments are wack. At the end of the day Young Chris says it best Steel Sharpens Steel, all you plastic forks ass niggaz fall back.

      Keep doing ya thing Chris.

    12. Even if Jay took his flow..he made it work for him,the reason I like Jay isn’t because he has a classic flow or anything..he can bend the fuck out of a word and use double and triple meanings which makes him the best at that, but as far as flow goes..Young Chris still uses his own flow better,he just doesn’t have the same mindstate or vocabulary Jay has…Jaz O was one of the first to find out…same shit, different toilet..

      1. yeah i agree with ya..jay did take the whisper flow from chris, he took it and put his own style and added better vocabulary to it, and like chris said, all of them was biting off each other, beanie sigel bit off jay-z with the ‘robotic flow’ ..

    13. mafuckaz must not listen to Jay that much….the nigga style aint change much since Reasonable Doubt its just alot more fluid…call it progression, evoution, or adapting which is what all the greats (should)do…but biting? fack outta heeyah!!!!

    14. what i been saying all along!!!!!!!!!! jay-z a bitch! most of his best verses are biggie bites! Dude is a swag jacka, but he real slick with that shit! bitch ass dude should be shot in his big ass lips!

    15. Who cares really about who jack who’s style? For the record, Peedi Crak is but like the half of state prop they can’t stay out of jail. If they could they would easily be the nicest clique in hip hop hands down. Free, Beans, Chris, Peedi (all spitters) Philly all day. Uptown first!
