Will Smith Tearfully Apologizes For Chris Rock Oscars Incident As He Wins Best Actor

Will Smith effectively broke the internet on Sunday night (March 27) when he punched Chris Rock during the 94th Annual Academy Awards for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett’s hair. Just minutes later, he won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for King Richard in which he portrays the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

Ironically, Richard Williams earned a reputation for being a “fierce defender” of his family, as Smith put it during his acceptance speech. He was then forced to address the elephant in the room — punching Chris Rock. As he took the microphone, Smith also described himself as a “fierce defender” of his family.

“In this time in my life, in this moment I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world,” he said with tears welling up in his eyes. “Making this film, I got to protect Aunjanue Ellis who is one of the most strongest, most delicate people I’ve ever met. I got to protect Saniyya [Sidney] and Demi [Singleton], the two actresses who played Venus and Serena. I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people. And to be a river to my people.

“And I know to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse, you gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you gotta have people disrespecting you and you gotta smile and you gotta pretend that it’s ok.”

Will Smith then spotted Denzel Washington in the audience and revealed The Equalizer actor had just told him, “At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you.”

He continued, “It’s like I wanna be a vessel for love. I wanna say thank you to Venus and Serena. I want to say thank you to the entire Williams family for entrusting me with your story. I wanna be an ambassador of that kind of love and that care and concern.

“I want to apologize to the Academy, I wanna apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people … art imitates life. I look like the crazy father. Love will make you do crazy things.”

Will Smith Clocks Chris Rock During The Oscars For Clowning His Wife Jada Pinkett

He ended with, “To my mother, a lot of this moment is really complicated for me. To my mother … she has a knitting crew in Philly she’s watching with. Being able to love and care for my mother, my family, my wife, thank you for this honor. Thank you for this moment … I hope the Academy invites me back.”

      1. Even if it was a somr person of color that was stronger than, he would not have done it. Can you see him slap Dwayne Johnson for example?

    1. Either Will is going through menopause or else he is taking Oestrogen hormones. Where was that protecting your family energy when you let your wife fuck other dudes??…..smh

      1. Or when the grown ass man was in the bed taking pictures with his 14 or 15-year-old daughter at the time. People need to GFOH with this I’m protecting my family shit. Will just a hoe.

    2. will. just like your dad apparently. oh wait will will come for me now? and note… will never apologized to the person he assaulted. can you say LAWSUIT?

    3. Where was all this energy when she was caught up in all them entanglements Your wrong for that hope chris sue your ass

    4. “At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you.”

Maybe he it’s his personal high, because he won on Oscar. But he has not been the megastar that turns every movie into a box office hit for quite some years.

    5. This dude is spiraling out of control. I don’t know wtf is going on with him, but Will has some issues right now. Maybe it’s 30 years of wearing the mask or some of the shit people allege he had to do to get his spot. Something is going on.

      1. The problem is that he really wants to leave Jada but he’s trying to keep this image along with not paying her half his fortune. Will should go and get counseling and just divorce Jada. You’ll be way more happier and relaxed.

    6. Will needs to accept his cuckold place and get back in the corner let chris rock fuck jada and watch it loke you did with august, tupac, jayZ , nas witang clan, and dipset hell jada nad styles were prb tag teaming it also

    7. Will is just like his father. Punching/slapping people who can’t fight back. Lmaooo. Doesn’t help that he’s married to a person who’s in love with someone else.

    8. Will Smith……bitch… Had no energy for August Alsina but he did for Chris Rock… bitch… Chris Rock made a joke, August had your wife and she embarrassed you over it….. bitch

    9. Will was laughing. Then wifey gave the stern look. He then remembered being chastised by her for not being a more defensive hubby, with the entanglement jokes, personal life being aired. He knew he was ish with her if he didn’t do anything. So he got up out his high chair, west side story pranced on the stage, and slapped Chris, with whom took it like a G. Regardless, the joke was insensitive, but also, the consequence of Wills reaction just further fuels smack talk, that ironically put him and jada in the crosshairs of the public, and with which probably made him look dumb

    10. Fake as fk. Everything he said he is called to be, that is what Chris Rock revealed he is. If Will smith knows all this, why the hell is he losing his temper and acting like a btch on live tv.

    11. Nice job making an ass of yourself in front of your moms and the knitting crew. Vessel of love? That joke wasnt even bad. That was supposed to be the best night of your career Will. Instead you blew it defending that cheating slut bitch whore wife. She fucked marc anthony and broke up jlos family. Fuck that stupid short little bitch.

    12. The famous black apology. Not once was the word sorry included. SMH. The cuck going all south side Chicago on a comedian for a joke. Great look.

    13. And the people talking about that joke need to stop reaching. Nobody would consider being compared to Demi Moore when she was an A-list star as a putdown, especially for Jada who has had short hair her whole career. This isn’t Denzel’s wife. She’s a celebrity too. It’s also ironic that he tried to use that as his reasoning when the reason the first Aunt Vivian had for falling out with him is because he used to make you’re so black jokes about her appearance when he was a grown ass man doing that shit, and he responded by getting her fired and not having shit to do with her until two years ago.

    14. Kudos to Will for doin what needed to be done. I wish someone would say something outta line about my girl on National television. I’d smack the taste out their mouth too.

Who cares what has happened, or what will happen. All that matters is what’s happening right now. And in Wills “right now” he was being punked on national TV. I woulda done a lot more. There’s a time and place for everything. And that was NOT the time for Chris.

      1. “There’s a time and place for everything.” I love how you acknowledged this yet also believed that it was perfectly justified for Will to do that while saying “I would have done a lot more”. A fine way to land yourself in the hands of officers to get you prosecuted or even jailed. Literally makes a little joke about his wife, WHICH WILL SMITH EVEN LAUGHED ABOUT, and that was enough to slap him at such an event, even though other audience members laughed at the joke and all Jada did was be slightly annoyed about it? This is why these stereotypes about black people being easily angry and violent continues to exist.

    15. I think there would have been more tendency to forgive Smith if his apology would have shown so e contrition. For him to mention in his speech that he hoped he’d be invited back shows how self-entitled he feels. His defending his behavior and not apologizing to Chris in his speech further sank more nails in his coffin. Anyone who says he is is a “work in progress” who’s made it to 50 as defense for horrible behavior is emotionally still a child. To use the word “heartbroken” was also wrong. Why not “ashamed?” He’s heartbroken because of the backlash. He’s heartbroken because of how this may affect his reputation. The next day or so, Smith is whisked off to a resort location (with help from his rich Middle Eastern prince friend) to lick his wounds and recover from to he backlash he he’s getting. Poor baby. Rock, on the other hand, continued to work, honoring his professional commitments and refused to talk about the incident, including refusing to spin it in on his favor. Trash vs. Class. The only satisfaction I’ll get is Smith being banned from any further Oscar ceremony and further condemnation from A-Listers with integrity.
