When the greatest rapper alive question was proposed in a tweet from Dallas news anchor Demetria Obilor on Thursday (December 14), Lupe Fiasco was quick to chime in with his answer.
“Ok, let’s try something…Who is the greatest rapper alive?,” Obilor asked.
According to Lupe, the answer was cryptic rhyme slinger Aesop Rock.
Rock, a former Definitive Jux signee, rose to notoriety in the ’90s underground Hip Hop scene, and has since released a number of solo albums, collaborative albums and EPs. His most recent solo album, The Impossible Kid, dropped via Rhymesayers Entertainment in April 2016.
The New York native responded to the nod from the DROGAS Light MC early Friday morning (December 15) with a set of prayer hand emojis.
Lupe also recently said he’s a future G.O.A.T. lyricist but for now, Rock evidently gets the title.
He’s been saying this often and loudly over the last year.
A joint project between the two would blow the funking doors off all the hinges.
Aesop Rock is egregiously overrated. He’s OK. Always been just OK. Lupe just doesn’t wanna give props to anyone that he feels is a threat.
Lupe is in my top 5 and u hit the nail on the head*
He probably has the most complex lyrics out there. Doesnt mean you have to like his music, but lyric wise he is more than “ok”
Guywithskills, I am a staunch lyric connoisseur and lifelong lyricist myself, for whatever that’s worth. He’s not over my head by a longshot, if that’s what you’re suggesting. He’s just not that nice. He’s not wack. He’s just not nearly as good as his fans make him out to be. He came along at a time when white rappers were rare, so it was surprising at first to hear a white MC who was natural. But now, taking a step back and listening to him objectively, he’s just not that ill. Homeboy Sandman outshines him pretty soundly on their recent project. Peace.
Lmao you’re tripping massively, Aesop is regarded by a lot of people, especially those in the rap game itself, as the best lyricist of all time. If you actually considered yourself to be into lyrics you’d be able to understand the complexities of his lyricism and the actual messages he delivers on every track, but you obviously can’t, so take your “I’m really smart and totally have a valid opinion” bullshit out of here.
This is hilarious. Fuck. Out. Of. Here.
Aesop Rock was around way before rocky lol.
Too bad nobody remembers this worthless bum even exists. Get a drake feature or get the hell out of the rap game. Drake is the only reason the rap genre exists drake is the sole number 1 rapper everybody else is irrelevant.
Only pillow bitters listen to Drake.
Drake uses same word to be rhyme poser in at least 40% of his lyrics. Baby doesn’t RHYME with Baby cuz they’re the SAME WORD. A rhyme is a DIFFERENT SOUND THAT SOUND LIKE ANOTHER SOUND….aka CAT & HAT… He ends every line in a bar with same word at least 40% of songs, i’ve databased his words & he ends up w/ 16% of his words being unique on a whole album AKA word ‘It’ is only counted once even is he uses it as 420 words out 1000…AESOP DOESN’T EVEN REPEAT A CHORUS IN 90% OF HIS SONGS, & DOES 3+ VERSES IN 90% OF EM. Drake couldn’t wrap his tongue around Aesop but AESOP COULD DEFINITELY COVER DRAKE TRACKS
ASAP Mob are g@y models, not rappers.
Rakim.
Lupe is wrong, because it is he who is the chosen one. Mural alone has more bars than most of the “relevant” rappers’ entire catalogues. Wasalu is top 5 dead or alive.
Lupe has lost his mind, his being loopy ahahahahahaha
Lupe just didnt want to name himself I guess
Turn down the suck.
LUPE
MF DOOM
BLACK THOUGHT
OLD CANIBUS
I think people aren’t treating Lupe’s judgment fairly; I think he’s 100% right.
Lyrics have always been the best part of rap for me. Aesop Rock has been my favorite rapper for a long time now, and I don’t see him losing that spot anytime soon; he’s head-and-shoulders above every other rapper in the game as lyricism, with the possible exception of MF DOOM and his legendary ilk. Aes’ flow is unique, and he uses it to spit what is literally the largest vocabulary out of all rappers, empirically speaking. Seriously, look it up; he’s measured to be leagues ahead of all the other rappers analyzed. He fits encyclopedias into bars and makes them sound tight as hell. Most other MCs couldn’t even cover his songs if they tried. He’s also got good production chops (just listen to AD:N+OR or Mush), very interesting ideas, and has been consistently prolific for 21+ Years across 3 decades and multiple distinct and individually impressive personal styles of rap tracks. IMHO, he’s never had a bad or even below-average project. I don’t even think I could name a bad track of his, either. Aes’ material is completely mind-blowing at best and at least listenable & intriguing at worst. I’ve yet to see anyone come close to eclipsing him.
If there’s anyone that truly deserves the title of GOAT, my vote’s goin’ towards Aesop Rock. Living Legend.
I cover his songs with my eyes closed over A$AP Rocky beats. Check out the Facebook page Antisocial Butterfly. Aesop Rock is the GOAT, plain and simple.
