The Game Names His Top 5 L.A. Rap Albums – And Puts Himself On The List

The Game knows a thing or two about Los Angeles rap, so when it was time for him to pick his top five albums from the city recently, his selections were no surprise.

The Compton native unleashed his list during a recent conversation with Just Blaze and Katty Customs on the latest episode of Uproxx’s Fresh Pair series, where hitmakers revisit some of their biggest career stories while also making custom sneakers.

The Chronic at number one, just because in order of appearance is important to me,” The Game said to start his list. “Everyone is motivated by things that happened before them, I have to go with Doggstyle. I feel like The Chronic was lowkey Snoop’s first album, too.”

He continued: “After that, it would have to be The Documentary. Just because of what that album did. I did that in a time in L.A. when I was the only…the biggest rapper in L.A. And I held it down for almost 10 years alone. Whole coast, the beast that came with it, the wars with whoever I went to war with.

“At No. 4, for me, it would have to be good kid, m.A.A.d city. ‘Cause I watched Kendrick and his essence, going from literally a good kid in a mad city, how he fought through being non-affiliated and staying the course and then putting out that album. The one that should have won a Grammy.”

The Game then closed his list by mentioning Ice Cube’s 1991 album: “At five, I feel inclined to say Death Certificate, just because of what that was to me.”

The Game previously went to bat for his debut album The Documentary when Rolling Stone didn’t include it in their “200 Greatest Hip Hop Albums of All Time” list in June. The Drillmatic MC was not happy about the exclusion and let it be known on Twitter.

“@RollingStone How is ‘The Documentary’ not on the list for 200 Greatest Rap Albums Of All Time?” Game wrote on Twitter. “I carried an entire coast for 20 years on the back of my 1st album. Cause I don’t walk red carpets, play dress up, smile or fake laugh at brunches I don’t count? #Drillmatic July 1.”

In January, The Game also came for Ebro Darden, T.I. and Funk Flex, who had curated a list of names they believed to be the top 50 rappers of all time. However, The Game’s name was nowhere to be found.

    1. Can’t lie The Documentary is a classic. Even better than GRODT if you ask me. The replay value of The Documentary is crazy even almost 20 years after its release.

      1. WTF you smoking. You been hanging around BlueFace BeatEm and sharing pipes again cuz ain’t no way in hell that The Documentary is better than GRODT. GRODT left a bigger impact and sold double what The Documentary did. The Documentary was a good album but there were too many filler songs on that album and forced features that felt inorganic. That’s why even though The Documentary sold better I think The Doctor’s Advocate was a better sounding album for The Game because it was him being himself in his element, proving that he can stand in his own.

        1. GROT is overrated as fuck! Like it or not halfwit people have different taste in music. I’ve never liked the production on GRODT that much. The Documentary is sonically better. Don’t cry like a bitch about it.

          1. You’re the bitch. Game is overrated AF. If it weren’t for Dr Dre, nobody would know or give AF about him. Ain’t Game the same guy who said that Ye did more for his career than Dr Dre. We all know he’s delusional as hell and if you believe that bullshit then you must be too.

            1. Game body of work is way more consistent than 50 Cent’s. Like it or not. You sound like a bitch having feelings. For me, The Documentary sounds better than GRODT. Don’t need to argue about that. I won’t change my mind because you think orherwise.

            2. Game’s dick must taste good to you I guess. I’m not a big fan of 50 Cent either but GRODT is undeniably better in terms of production, concept, lyrics, and overall impact on the hip hop community. If you ask many rappers right now what album influenced them more between the two I guarantee you they’d say GRODT. Now you’re boyfriend is claiming that Dr Dre didn’t even produce a record on his album. The problem with Game is his credibility, he lies so much that it destroys it. After a while, people get tired of all the bullshit. That’s why he’s not respected as much as any other rapper.

            3. Well I guess you like to suck 50’s balls too bitch. And don’t give me the “I’m not a big fan of 50 Cent” argument to sound like you’re objective. GRODT production is average for me. Don’t bother with your bullshit argument. Like I said : I won’t change my opinion just because you think otherwise. I’m leave it to that.

    2. Surprised he didn’t say N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton” since he said it so much on The Documentary (and tried to name his album N.W.A volume 1. but the Eazy-E/The Wright Family wasn’t having it) that I thought he was literally going to have it tattooed on his tongue.

    3. Good list. It was a joke those albums were rated so low on Rolling Stones’ list… and Documentary wasn’t even on it.

    4. Despite Game being reckless, I really enjoy his music & he is 1 of my favorite rappers. His top 5 album list is solid & I love those Albums & the Documentary

    5. The Documentary is good, very good even, but not a true classic, and it didn’t age all that great. Dude is delusional again overrating himself/his work. Better than Dre’s 2001, both NWA albums, Amerikkkaz Most Wanted, and countless others?! Nah son!

    6. Well I’m not from the West Coast I’m a southerner but my top 5 West Coast albums are: #5 Straight outta Compton by NWA
#4 Bow Down by Westside Connection
#3 Gangstas Paradise by Coolio rip
#2 Good Kid MAAD city by Kendrick Lamar
#1 All eyes on me by 2pac
