SZA Ties Cardi B’s Chart Record As ‘SOS’ First-Week Sales Projections Arrive

SZA has matched a chart record held by Cardi B with the release of her new album, SOS.

The Top Dawg Entertainment singer simultaneously occupied the entire top 10 on U.S. Apple Music with songs from her latest LP on Friday (December 9), the day it was released.

In doing so, SOS tied Cardi’s Invasion of Privacy as the female album with the most top 10 hits in U.S. Apple Music history with 13.

Over on Spotify, SOS broke the record for biggest single-day streams for an R&B album in Spotify history with 68 million, according to Chart Data.

The project is on pace to make a big splash on next week’s Billboard 200. Per HITS Daily Double, SOS is projected to earn around 275,000-300,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, which would secure SZA her first No. 1 album.

Following the release of SOS, SZA spoke to Glamour about the inspiration behind the new album and being unapologetically herself.

“It’s about heartbreak, it’s about revenge, it’s about being pissed,” she said. “I’ve never raged the way that I should have. This is my villain era, and I’m very comfortable with that. It is in the way I say no, it’s in the way I’m deciding what I’m taking, what I’m not taking. It’s in the fucked up things that I don’t apologize for.”

She continued: “I am a bitch — it’s not all the time, but when I am, that’s okay. I don’t have to spend my whole life trying to be a nice girl. It’s just not who I am. But I am a good person.”

SOS serves as the follow-up to 2017’s Ctrl, which featured Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Isaiah Rashad and James Fauntleroy. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with roughly 60,000 total album-equivalent units in its first week.

Ctrl was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards, with “Supermodel” nominated for Best R&B Song, “The Weekend” nominated for Best R&B Performance and the Travis Scott-featured “Love Galore” nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance.

The album also helped SZA receive a nomination for Best New Artist.

    1. Sza is dope and fine, TDE kinda been dropping the ball with her. She easily could be a international superstar. It’s good to see her album will do great numbers. I still think that when her contract is up with TDE interscope will sign her outright and cut TDE out the deal. It’s crazy to think TDE will no longer have Kendrick or Sza.

    2. It’s more on track to sell 60,000 to the copies plus doja cat buying 120k and sza’s manager buying the other 120k.

      1. Why do y’all keep on forgetting about thee legendary H.E.R. The most multi-talented RNB artist. 5 time Grammy Award Winner, 1 time Oscar winner. She’s so authentic I can’t even describe her talent sometimes. Just saying y’all have to remember her

      2. Agreed I did think about H.E.R when I mentioned the three above, I guess I left her off because I don’t listen to her as much. But you’re definitely right. Damaged might be a top ten song this decade for me. I also thought of Mahalia

    3. Men and woman are the same but we get categorized with different records. Because men are a little bit sharper in all aspects of life. That’s why God asks the woman to submit to her husband. The husband knows best since he’s the one putting in all the work.
