Colin Kaepernick is calling foul on reports claiming he and Travis Scott had a conversation about his performance for the Super Bowl LIII halftime show.
The stories implied Scott spoke with the high profile activist before accepting the gig and would cosign Scott’s performance if he and the NFL donated $500,000 to a social justice organization.
On Tuesday (January 15), Ebro Darden — who works closely with Kaepernick’s girlfriend Nessa — retweeted a Variety story with the headline, “Travis Scott Consulted With Colin Kaepernick Before Confirming #SuperBowl Appearance.”
At the top, he wrote, “Kap did not approve this bullshit! Get the fuck outta here.”
The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback promptly shared Darden’s sentiments.
Darden continued defending Kaep across his social media platforms while sending Scott a warning.
“Don’t be fooled,” he wrote on Instagram. “The NFL & others are using you @travisscott.”
Nessa also weighed in on the matter, writing, “FACTS @EBRO!!! THEY NEED TO STOP LYING. There is NO mutual respect and there is NO understanding for anyone working against @Kaepernick7 PERIOD. #stoplying.”
On Sunday (January 13), Maroon 5 (who is headlining the Super Bowl LIII halftime show) announced Big Boi would be joining the lineup. That same day, Nessa shared the urban dictionary definition of a “sell out.”
“If you’re with them, then you are definitely not with us,” she wrote.
Scott’s and Big Boi’s participation has drawn plenty of criticism from those boycotting the NFL for its treatment of Kaep. While still playing for the 49ers, Kaep started taking a knee during the National Anthem in protest of police brutality and other social injustices.
In 2017, Kaep became a free agent but no team offered him a contract. That October, he filed a grievance against the NFL, accusing team owners of colluding to keep him from being signed. Since then, he’s become a social activist icon and continues to speak out.
