By now, it’s no secret some artists occasionally use ghost writers — they just do. The prolific Dr. Dre, who is partly responsible for the insurmountable success of N.W.A, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and (of course) his own solo career, has blossomed into one of rap’s most legendary figures. Behind the scenes, the Compton-bred mogul apparently wrote a little more than people maybe realized.
MC Ren of N.W.A fame sat down for an interview with Unique Access Ent. and discussed what went on during the West Coast gangster rap boom. When the subject of Eazy E’s solo single “Eazy-Er Said Than Dunn” was brought up, Ren said, “What’s crazy about that song too, is…Dre had a lot of people write [for him], but Dre wrote that record…all the lyrics on that song.”
Taken from the late legendary rapper’s 1988 solo album, Eazy-Duz-It, the song was credited solely to Eazy.
Ren also mentioned Dre actually was more serious about production back in the day, and explained the difference between Dre as a producer and Dre as an MC.
“With the music, he’s like a beast, man,” he said. “He’s like so serious when he’s doing the music, doing the tracks and all of that. When he writing…he would have other people write for him, and then sometimes he’d just pick up the pen and write. He wouldn’t be as serious as he would doing the tracks. [Making music], he gonna be serious as hell…like he’s sinking into the music. Writing, he’d rarely do that. He rarely would write back in the day. Either I’d write his stuff, [Ice] Cube would write some, or [The D.O.C.] would write some. He rarely picked up the pen and wrote.”
Other topics discussed range from Parliament-Funkadelic’s influence to Ruthless Records’ diverse roster. Watch the full interview above.
For some reason i dont believe Ren on this 1.
Why lie?
I knew this when the album came out…just look at the credits
All you have to do is find the cassette with the original credits on there, Dr. Dre is listed as sole writer. The lyrics are pretty simple compared to other songs on that album so it’s not a far stretch. Dre also wrote the first parts of his Deep Cover verse and Snoop finished it. Dre can write, it just takes him long so he’d rather use others to write. He helped with his Compton verses too.
Thank you, people think they know the game but they don’t. What would Ren get out of lying to something this. I can write too but production is my strength. So it’s nothing wrong with a person getting a writer especially if it’s not their strength.
sounds like a whole lotta bullshit to me. i mean we all know Eazy ain’t wrote his own shit but Dre hardly a lyricist either i find it hard to believe he would have been the one they woulda asked to write for dude.. to this day Dre BEEN known for using ghostwriters.. maybe this Ren guy trying to brown nose Dre
Just like the movie…a whole lotta B.S
I don’t get why Ren would lie about something so dumb. He said Dre hardly ever wrote, except for in this rare instance. Did you ever actually listen to “Eazy Er Said Than Done” ?
It’s not like it’s super lyrical or anything.
Actually it IS a pretty lyrical song lol and from the time the album was released it had all the writers listed so I wouldn’t even say it was ghostwritten
Maybe Eazy asked Dre to write it for him and then Dre asked someone to write it for him? Like ghostwriting Inception. think about that…
“This Ren guy” is one of the most influencal MCs of his time. Don’t be ignorrant just because the reality doesn’t match the fuckin biopic. He was there, you were not.
Dr. Dre can write but he really fuck with the beats so ren don’t have to lie bout this eazy was never ashamed of having a ghostwriter that’s what made them so tight hip-hop was unified for real back in the days everybody went on tour together and if there was beef it stay on wax
I bought a windoinng album
