Kendrick Lamar “To Pimp A Butterfly” Release Date, Cover Art, Tracklist & Album Stream

Kendrick Lamar’s Untitled album is slated for a March 23 release, according to iTunes.

The project is slated to feature 16 songs, including the Compton, California rapper’s “The Blacker The Berry” single, which was released last month.

In November, K-Dot said that his forthcoming album could be “even more raw” sonically than good kid, m.A.A.d city

“If anything, aside from good kid, it’ll probably feel even more raw,” Kendrick Lamar said at the time. “Because it’s a little more dirty with the live, dirty drums on it. It’s not something that’s contemporary with the MPC and you pressing different patterns and things like that, but we’ll see how it come out…Everything’s really in-house. Of course Dre, but I really stick with four producers that I’ve been working with since day one. I don’t really go outside the box of that soundwave.”

In September, the TDE rapper released his “i” single.

UPDATE: Kendrick Lamar posted what appears to be the album cover and title of his forthcoming album today (March 10).

“Don’t all dogs go to heaven? Don’t Gangsta’s boogie? Do owl shit stank? Lions, Tigers & Bears. But TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY. Its the American dream nigga….” – lil Homie.,” the TDE rapper wrote on Instagram.

To Pimp A Butterfly appears to be the album title, though iTunes still labels the album titled as Untitled.

TDE’s Top Dawg tweeted regarding the Compton, California rapper’s Instagram post.

“You ask 4 it … Now u got it… #TDE,” Top Dawg wrote on Twitter.

    1. All these great artist coming out or came out with something Drake, Big Sean, DaVinchee X, Kendrick Lamar (this month) and Kanye West is supposed to be coming out as well.

      1. Big Sean is one of the worst rappers I have ever heard and the others are no where close to being great..maybe kendrick one day

      2. Not sure what you guys look (be interested in knowing) for but in terms of production, lyrical diversity, flow, delivery, and vibe they would be considered great.

It shouldn’t be about if you like the artist as a individual but more about the product and music they are releasing.

      3. Not one person said anything about the artist as an individual..Big Sean as an “artist” (which he’s not) is unbearable to listen to and if you think he’s great that’s your opinion but you need to get your ears checked..the others you listed are not great either but they are at least lyrical unlike Big Sean…All im really saying is Big Sean sucks…a lot…like, he’s horrible

      4. Kendrick will probably one day be considered the best. Kanye is polarizing people, but even so mainstream audiences and critics consider MBDTF the magnum opus of hip-hop. That along with Public Enemy’s album and Illmatic are the only hip-hop albums that crack any top 100 albums of all time lists. I agree Kanye can be a bit crazy. You have to respect his greatness. I think he is better than jay-z in my honest opinion. Jay-Z is pretty lame imo.

      5. I agree with you that these are all great artists. Big Sean’s album was great, Kanye is kind of a nut job but still an incredible mc. Drake’s new shit was alright, but still the guy is great at what he does. Kendrick Lamar is a great artist that will only get better. Everyone on the board complains about Big Sean, but you all listen to his album every time he brings out a new one. Quit listening to hip hop until you can maybe compliment the accomplishments these guys have made.

      1. ^^ He’s talking about racism and s**t and his album is untitled, he’s obviously trying to be like Nasir with his p*ssy ass.

      2. don’t think the album’s actually untitled, just think they’re not revealing the title until it drops

      3. @Hood err… So because Nas talks about Afro-American suffering, injustice and inequality, Kendrick is being a Nas imitator? Let’s flip it the other way around. Say Nas is the only one talking on this subject and actually waking people’s minds up while educating the new generation to the struggle. If you create an icon of a man and label him as the force of change, that man will become a martyr. Martin Luther King. Malcolm X. Jesus. Gandhi. All these people pushing and promoting the truth who were cut down at their prime because the swayed public consciousness in to empowerment of the masses. They snipe them down. I would rather see hundreds of Mcs in the game rapping about inequality and injustice and exposing the truth while actively taking action in the system to level these injustices, than see one man made a martyr who is deemed the only one capable and worthy of such a focus. If you prefer the latter, you are against the liberation of Afro-Americans from police corruption, an end to professional, organised racism and the economical equality of all races. The day every MC is as educated as Nas is the day every MC is awake. Peace my dude.

    2. Congrats to Dumbo Ears for finally being able to get another album out.

(BTW, it ain’t coming anywhere near to the sales of drake’s recent album and the first only went platinum because of drake’s appearance.)

      1. Please. This new album will sell as much as Aubrey, if not, more, and Aubrey was not the reason why GKMC went platinum

      2. LIL B IS THE RAWEST RAPPER ALIVE! DRAKE AND KENDRICK ARE GOOD. SPREAD LOVE.
        -LIL B, THE BASED GOD

      1. fashawn is mad dope. his new album is top notch. hope k dot album is as good. westcoast mcs comin back. all tde, dag savage, blu fashawn and many more
        i like it

      1. Nas wasn’t the first one to not name his album. Besides, they’re going to announce a title eventually.

    3. When it’s all said and done Drake will be considered the greatest artist of this era, a hybrid of Marvin Gaye and Nas. Kendrick on the other hand will draw comparisons to Arrested Development and Digable Planets. A conscious lyricist with some hot songs, some critical acclaim and a dope album or two, but he’ll largely be forgotten in the broader annals of music.

      1. If you truly believe the bullshit you just posted, then you are delusional. Drake will never be the greatest of this era and he’s nothing like Marvin Gaye or Nas. K-Dot will never be forgotten and he is WAY above Arrested Development and Digable Planets. He’s the only rapper of this generation to make a classic, something Aubrey doesn’t have and will never have. Then again, your name indicates you’re a troll, so your comment will never be taken seriously.

      2. As we speak, Kendrick’s new album is currently #1 on ITunes. Doesn’t sound like someone who’ll be forgotten.

      3. OVO The Prophet is correct. Ain’t no shame in dropping a couple of hot albums before fizzling out. Drake has staying power.

      4. ^ And Kendrick doesn’t have staying power? SMH Dumbass. and no, OVO Porphet is incorrect. No way Dot fizzles out. Drake will fizzle out before that happens.

      5. Drake trancends hip-hop. That’s why he will go down as the greatest artist of all-time. The industry needs Drake more than he needs to make music. Check the charts, Drake’s all over them, as a lead and as a guest artist.

      6. No, Drake doesn’t transcend hip-hop. He’ll never be the greatest artist of all time, especially when his catalog is average at best. The industry doesn’t need him as there’s millions of other artists out there. The charts are irrelevant and only dignify popularity, not quality.

      7. So according to your dumbass New Edition wasn’t talented? Mmmmkay. Certainly more talented than 99 percent of emcees.

      8. Of course they were, they sang, danced and were marketed to young girls/women. What makes them any different from B2K or NSYNC?

New Edition weren’t just guys singing like Boyz to Men.

    4. Look, at this moment, the album name and song ‘Blacker the Berry,’ doesn’t matter. Kendrick is the only rapper/lyricist today that actually takes advantage of the podium he is placed upon. He knows people will buy and listen to his music, and if he is able to reach one person and help them, the he accomplished his purpose. Other rappers, including Drake, or Big Sean, or whatever dont do that. Once this album drops you’ll understand why its titled that and has a plain black cover. It’ll all come full circle. Thats what Kendrick does

    5. Looking at the comments section on these HHDX posts constantly shocks and depresses me. I can’t believe there are this many haters for something as trivial and unsubstantiated as the WORKING TITLE of an upcoming album. I don’t give a fuck if you think Kendrick is the new Rap Messiah or overhyped and wack, none of you have put yourself out there the way he or any other rappers have: opening their lives up to ceaseless scrutiny from nameless keyboard thugs, performing before thousands of fans each with their own expectations and opinions…the amount of dedication, self-sacrifice, and sheer ballsiness it takes to maintain a high-profile career in a genre as fickle and fiercely competitive as Hip-Hop already makes them leagues above some of the shallow, ridiculous criticisms I’ve seen here. I’m not against informed, sensible criticism when there’s an actual point to be made, but the senseless bashing that occurs on sites like these is enough to discourage any upcoming rapper from even attempting to put his name out there in the fear of being branded, mocked, and ridiculed for everything from the experimental nature of his sound to simply stating that he sucks dick or looks like Super Mario. What is this, a high school prom? I understand having passionate arguments and using hyperbole to get your points across, but have some fucking respect for the people that are hustling and grinding all day to bring you the uplifting, encouraging, socially charged music that all of us (myself included) are obviously huge fans of. I’m not some butthurt Kendrick stan trying to garner sympathy for the guy, I know he’s got millions and couldn’t give less of a fuck about what some internet commentators have to say about his album cover. But as a fan of hip-hop and music in general, I think it’s stupid to populate a section that should be reserved for intelligent arguments and thought-provoking debate with meaningless slurs and insults. Every time a rapper does ANYTHING at all that warrants a mention on this site, there are at least five or six people criticizing him for it, mocking him for going down that path, calling him all manner of juvenile insults without even knowing him or the struggles that he had to go through to get to his current position in the game. Instead of spending that energy typing some nonsensical hatred, why don’t we have real arguments with actual valid points that can expand everyone’s minds and help introduce people to each of our unique perspectives on this musical genre we all clearly love to talk about?

      1. Yo don’t know music then G, wait till the music drops and then critique it, the music will help you understand the cover and title.

    6. Some of you act like kendrick is even remotely close to drakes level. Where’s kendrickas double platinum albums at? Where’s his Grammy at?. I don’t see Kendrick breaking records. I Don’t see him selling out tours world wide. He is not a global icon like drake is. His crew isn’t even as successful as the weekend. Don’t you ever compare dumbo to a certified legend in the rap game. When it’s all said and done drake will be considered a legend because he is far more popular and known than dumbo. Outside of hipsters kendrick will never become popular globally.

      1. You are wrong about everything again. Kendrick is above Drake’s level. You bring up nothing but lies. Kendrick has a platinum album, he has two Grammys (that’s one more than Drake), Drake isn’t breaking any impressive records, K-Dot is selling out tours worldwide, Drake is not an icon, The Weeknd isn’t even Drake’s artists and TDE is more successful than OVO. Drake will never be a legend and Kendrick will be. Popularity and numbers doesn’t equal to legend status, the music does and Kendrick’s music is superior.

    7. Dumbo will never be on drakes level. Drake is a global superstar while outside of hipsters kendrick is unknown globally. To be a legend you need numbers to back it up

      1. That’s your best insult? Dumbo? Lame. Kendrick is a global superstar like Aubrey. If only hipsters know about Kendrick, then he wouldn’t have a platinum selling album, doing shows worldwide, performing at every festival, nor would he be receiving the attention he’s getting now. And you’re wrong. You don’t have to put up numbers to be legend, you just have to make dope music, which

    8. I haven’t anticipated an album in a long time. I want to hear it in it’s entirety. Going in with no expectations.

    9. I haven’t anticipated an album in a long time. I want to hear it in it’s entirety. Going into it with no expectations just a fan of hip hop and music overall.

    10. A wack, meaningless, title, from a fake, pseudo intellectual rapper, who tries too hard to be smart. Exactly what I expected.

    11. To Pimp a Hoe (that’s what Dumbo kendall is) will be lucky to go platinum this time. Since then, an actual artist from compton named YG showed how the game is done.

      1. YG sucks and My Krappy Life flopped big time. K-Dot will sell platinum again, maybe even more. The hype is too big.

    12. To pimp a butterfly what the fuck is Kendrick smoking? Like most artist these days k.dot lost his focus due to the label. Section #80 was his best album you can tell he had some freedom in the studio then punch takes over and it’s been downhill from then.

    13. Dope album cover, but I’m still trying to figure out the title. I like how they got the judge on the ground with his eyes crossed out, it looks like it shows the victory of African americans getting into the white house and took back what’s theres. Just thinking.

    14. THIS ALBULM COVER REPRESENT’S RACIST AMERICA’S PERSPECTIVE OF WHAT THEY THOUGHT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN OBAMA GOT ELECTED!

OR IT COULD REPRESENT RACIST AMERICA’S WORST NIGHTMARE: NIGGAS WITH MONEY & POWER! #JustMyOpinion

      1. I take it they are referring to the Owl, Lions, Tigers and Bears thing from his Instagram. That’s a shot at OVO, and he’s bitting lines from Drake’s “No tellin'”, that is pathetic. Kendrick can’t even promote his own album without indirectly referring to Drake. Kendrick’s a bitch for that though, didn’t boi-1da produce Blacker The Berry? This guy would be nothing without OVO, yet he can’t stop sending subliminal disses. Kendrick will get bodied in due time, don’t worry. #OVOovereverything

      2. Idiot, he’s not taking shots at OVO at all. You read too much into shit. Kendrick never bit any lines from any of Drake’s songs. K-Dot never mentioned Drake at all and he’s not the bitch, you are. Kendrick is doing fine without OVO, who didn’t do a damn thing for him. Again, Kendrick never dissed anyone and he’ll never get bodied. #FuckOVO #TDEOverEverything

      3. Does Drake’s No Tellin’ contain the line “Lions, Tigers and Bears”? YES
Is OVO’s symbol an owl? YES

If you don’t think that’s a shot at Drake, you are riding the shortbus. That animal line follows a proclaimation by Drake that he’s basically the best in the game.

I’m not the only person who got Kendrick’s Instagram cheap shot.

      4. Again, you’re reading too much into shit. Those things have nothing to do with what Kendrick said. It’s you who riding the shortbus if you think that’s a shot at Drake. The animal line is not Aubrey saying he’s the best. The only people who think Kendrick is taking a shot at Drake with his Instagram is retarded Drake stans like you who can’t keep their names out your mouths. Go suck Drake’s dick somewhere else.

      5. “Don’t speak to me like I’m that Drake from 4 years ago, I’m at a higher place. Thinking they Lions and Tigers and Bears, I go hunting, put heads on my fireplace.”

        Drake No Tellin’

You’re riding the shortest bus ever nigga.

      6. It’s you who’s riding the shortest bus if you think there’s some correlation between that and what Kendrick said. All of you Drake stans always want ro make everythin about your hero.

      1. You don’t know who’s producing it yet and they also made it clear they don’t know whether there would be features or not.

    15. Kendrick impressed me when he came out. His second album everyone called a classic I disagreed. I felt like he was losing his touch when he dropped swimming pools and calling out every new generation rapper in a verse wasn’t nothing new. I like these tde kids but I wish they would put out more stuff like their first albums. Section #80 and contradictions were fire and can’t forget about follow me home. Now them niggas is just getting weird with the exception of jay rock. To pimp a butterfly wtf k.dot? Get back to making good music grab rza for another collab fuck what punch says or any of these label goons says.

    16. Kendrick is real. All these Drake lovers are 13 and probably think 2pac is “overrated” lmao pop culture brainwashed phaggots

    17. so I can download that shit right now? Kendrick vs drake is like comparing Nas to Tridad james haha the Piratebay better be working again tho

    18. To Pimp A Butterfly: 3/5. If You’re Reading This It’s Already To Late: 5/5. Aubrey continues to dominate on the score card. “Please don’t speak to me like I’m that Drake from 4 years ago. I’m at a higher place. Thinkin’ they lions and tigers and bears, I go huntin’, put heads on my fireplace” – Drake. Keep taking subliminal shots at Drake, we will see what happens.

      1. Blacker The Berry, Swimming Pools and Poetic Justice were all produced by or featured OVO artists. Drake featured him on his Grammy award winning album and highly successful tour, yet Kendrick takes shots at Drake on Instagram, as well as the BET cypher. Kendrick’s career wouldn’t be half of what it is without Drake and OVO Sound.

      2. You are wrong about everything. To Pimp A Butterfly is 5/5 and Too Late is 2/5. Aubrey isn’t dominating anything outside of popularity. Kendrick never took shots at Drake at all. Kendrick’s career has done well without OVO and Drake. Nobody cares about the producers, just the artists. Those songs you mentioned aren’t the only songs he has that are successful.

      3. Kendrick was well-known in the mainstream before Drake hopped on the bandwagon. His career would still be the same without him. And also, nobody gives a fuck about OVO Sound. They’re nothing more than Drake’s weed carriers. Like homeboy said, no one gives a fuck about producers, only the artist.

      4. OVO sounds isn’t full of weed carriers. Partynextdoor had a hit album and ILOVEMAOKEN is hitting it big, certainly more than Gay Rock, Homoboy L, and Anal soul. Kendrick thinking he’s big on his own when Drake helped his ass out (in popularity, Kendrick was always shit).

      5. OVO is full of weed carriers. PMD doesn’t have a hit album and ILoveMakonnen a talentess one-hit wonder trash artist who relied on Drake for a hit. All of TDE shits on them and Drake never helped Kendrick out as he was already big on his own before Drake hopped on the bandwagon (BTW, K-Dot is dope, not shit).

      6. Never heard of ken doll until 2011. Known drake since 2006 though. Maoken song made the top 15 without drake (his remix came later), and PDM was acclaimed success. Tde is garbage.

      7. That’s your fault, then. Makonnen’s trash ass Tuesday song only became successful because of Drake and PND’s album flopped. TDE is dope, OVO is garbage.

      8. That tuesday song shits on anything from the pimp a butterfly album (gay ass title that may as well come from a mariah carey album)

      9. Tuesday is a shit song and is not better than aythng from To Pimp A Butterfly (which isn’t gay and sounds nothing like anything from Mariah Carey).

      10. There’s nothing unique about Tuesday. It’s a shitty club song with no soul performed by someone who can’t rap or sing and uses Auto-Tune because their voice is weak (nobody goes to clubs on a Tuesday, that’s reserved for the weekend).

    19. No way is he winning a Grammy for this album. This is probably his worst album and old White people ain’t going to be feeling this. Big Sean’s album is better and it’s easier for old folks to digest. Plus he’s banging that hot little Italian.

    20. iTunes took it down…it’s back to Pre-Order only. Luckily my phone downloaded the album before they took it down.

    21. This album has about 5 good songs and a bunch of mediocre garbage. I can’t get into this. The beats suck, Kendrick can’t sing and him changing up his voice all the time gets annoying.

    22. Album is trash. Where the fuck is aftermath features and dre production? oh wait there isnt none. Biggest flop in years.

    23. Garbage. The fact that you guys compare kendrick to drake is a joke. Kendrick should be shining drakes shoes for a living. Drake is all hits no misses. Kendrick took 2 years plus to release this garbage?

      1. Nah, Drake’s music is garbage. TPAB is a dope album and is better than anything Drake releases (btw, Drake has misses).

    24. GKMC was much better than this.
Still waitin’ Documentary 2 to drop. Hope it will be a BOMB with those hyped producers and features.

    25. Aubrey stans are tight as a nun’s pussy right now,

Your favorite artist will be faded into oblivion by this elegant piece of work Kendrick has just released
