Kendrick Lamar Announces Official Album Title, Release Date

Despite Top Dawg Entertainment agreeing to a partnership with Aftermath earlier this year, Kendrick Lamar’s major label debut may find itself devoid of any big name producers. Aftermath is a subsidiary of Interscope, which in theory would provide access to the likes of Pharrell Williams (his solo debut, In My Mind was released via Interscope) and Aftermath CEO Dr. Dre. But Top Dawg’s Kendrick Lamar has other plans for his upcoming album, Good Kid In A Mad City.

“The producers are really in-house,” Kendrick explained an interview with Hypetrak TV. “Soundwave, Tae Beats, Willie B., Dave Free—Digi-Phonics really. I just kept it [limited] to the people I came in with because they know my sound. I know their sound, and we mesh properly when we get in that studio and lock in.”

However there are two other notable producers with whom Kendrick is spending time. He says his collaborative mixtape with J. Cole is still in the works. According to K.Dot, the two spend a lot of time on the phone, but their respective schedules make finishing the mixtape difficult.

No word on that legendary producer that Kendrick has been linked with for the better part of the past 18 months. To date, Dr. Dre’s contribution to the album has been limited to rhyming on the Scoop DeVille-produced “The Recipe.” But even that wasn’t fully planned.

“We were just the studio having fun really,” Kendrick added. “And that’s how the best records come about. We wasn’t going for no particular type of record. We just wanted to have fun. It felt like me; it felt like some new energy. Dre loved it, and we started rolling with it. It’s definitely a good representation of where we’re from.”

Despite not seeing a physical release, Kendrick’s Section.80 album landed in Billboard magazine’s Top 25 digital albums chart; it also placed on the Billboard 200 top-selling albums list. The full interview with Hypetrak TV can be seen below.

      1. people like you are what’s wrong with the game now , numbers and popularity do not in any way make someone a better rapper or artist . shows like 2 and half men are the equivelent toying money , they appeal to a lot of people due to how generic and simple the content it. and people watch it because it is force fed by a major corporation . so have fun being 19 , wearing a crocked hat , living with your parents and listing to YM aka “fitting in” . when you’re ready to grow up, move out , and become an adult (and think for yourself) then you can check out artists like ; del, blackalicious , Kendrick , ab-soul, brother Ali, murs , atmosphere , el-p, dr octagon (kool Keith ) , ect .

      2. how about u keep it to yourself and stop making it as if your choice of rap artist is better, thats probably the worst way u can get anyone to listen to what u want them to hear, how about u let them listen to what they like and u listen to what u like and u can give recommendations on artist u like instead of badmouthing the others favorites, peace

      3. he came here just to bad mouth Kendrick so fuck off , you don’t think he rudely voiced his opinion first ?

    1. in house producers? buhahahhaahaha you had a chance to sign to YMCMB but u fucked it up and chosed Dr. Gay…. yo unpopular producers make wack beats…. T-Minus, boi-1da and Lex Lugar are da best. YMCMB. swag

      1. what makes you think they would’ve signed and actually pushed his project. There’s not a single real MC on that label, and Kendrick isn’t about to do Drake numbers. If he signed he would’ve been dropped within the year

      2. fuck all yall corn head wack ass rappers. this 2012 baby. u need to be dope, fly and rock that pretty boi swag! drizzy nice on da mic and in the face. lamar should kiss his ring for getting on club paradise tour. drake shit dope man. fuck yall fav rappers .yall know YMCMB run shit. yall love em. yall need em
        love live icy
        swerve. swag.
        YMCMB OVOXO MMG BRICK SQUAD
        brrrrrap

      3. YMCMB has the most unoriginal, corniest music in the world. They’re all sell outs, even Drake. Kendrick keeps it true to himself and to him fam, he’s original. That’s what timeless music is, original, fuck that pretty boy swag. Faggot.

      4. pay no attention to So Icy Boi.He’s always been a YMCMButtslave who wouldnt know real hip hop if it smacked him upside his head

    2. interesting, I’m not sure why he would chose to associate so closely with Dre and aftermath if he has no intention of putting a couple Dre beats on his record. Im sure Dre is a cool guy but he’s got 30 years on him. I know Dre wanted Kendrick on Detox, which he won’t release, but Im surprised he’s not looking for actual Dre beats, yet somehow Dre will be an exec producer on the album

      1. I heard him say that he was in the studio with dre for the chronic and 2001 so i think they have been friends for ever…but i might have miss heard

      2. Nigga who the fuck told you that? Kendrick is 24 how the fuck would he have been in The Chronic sessions in 1992? It has been said countless times that Dre first noticed him after Overly Dedicated. I believe Ignorance is Bless is what really sold him.

    3. I’m SOOOOO glad to hear this. The production on Section 80 was consistent, original, and dope. I would hate to hear him feel like he has to rap over Swizz, Lex Luger, Justice League or Bangladesh and shit like that.

And on the real, Dre is a WAAAAY better executive producer than he is a beatmaker. So having his ear and involvements on an entire album is a better look than getting a couple of Dre beats.

      1. And yet he was on twitter trying to get at Swizz beats, said he’s work with Just Blaze, Q-tip wanna work and Pharell. So You never know what to believe.

    4. if it aint broke don’t fix it. just like Drake wit his boy 40. if ur sound iz what makes u hot then u dont need to work wit otha producers just to fit in.

    5. Really hoping for some more work with tommy black, all their collabos been dope as hell. Blow my high cant be f with. pz.

    6. this kind sounds smart. i think he has a real head for good choices and not rushing into shit!! i wanna hear him on a jellyroll beat lol

    7. Kendrick is alright but I can think off the top of my head 5 rappers from the west that is better than this nigga. Everyone just dickriding Kendrick cuz the quality of rap is garbage. 10 years ago, no one would have Kendrick at the top of they list nowadays this nigga is dickrode by so many niggas in this game.

      1. he is a little over rated but I cant name 5 better rappers doing it big right now in the west so STFU

      2. yeah, name them. Even if you could pull 5 names out of your ass I doubt most people would agree with you.

      3. Jay Rock, Absoul, Nipsey Hussle, Schoolboy Q, Fashawn.

There’s 5 for you kendrick dickriders.

      4. As soon as I saw Nipsey Hussle on your list, I knew right away that I couldn’t take you seriously…

      5. Yo. that’s just your fucking opinion. I think the 5 rappers you named were all good, but personally I like Kendricks music more then all of theirs. And I have been listening too Kendrick since overly dedicated dropped before he was getting all this hype. I also have control system and habits and contradictions on my ipod. its all good music so stop taking shots calling ppl dick riders cus they have a different taste in music then you. fuckboy.

      6. Lol, you couldn’t think of any other rappers so you named the rest of Black Hippy…fail. Fashawn is dope though, I agree on that one.

      7. Why is rap the only section of music where you have to like ____ and than hate _____. Shit is ridiculous. So what if somebody likes Kendrick and you think he is overrated? So what we all gotta listen to whoever you think is top 5? Stop tryin to make stupid ass lists

      8. LOL this guy put the rest of black hippy in his top 5.. he has his buzz for a reason people not gonna give u respect you gotta earn and he did that by far..

      9. jay rock and nipsey hustle better than kendrick? ill respect your taste man but damn id love to know what your judging music off of i obviously cant say your taste is wrong or worse than mine i just honestly dont understand. Fashawn and Soul are dope but i still don’t believe they as good as kendrick but i love em

    8. KENDRICK SUCKS. I’D LISTEN TO NICKI’S NEW ALBUM BEFORE HIS ALBUM. LIL WAYNE IS SEXIER ANYWAY.

      YMCMB OVO MMG

    9. k. dot is really the new 2pac. such deep lyricism and a great flow. he really keeps u interested to listen to him. anyone that thinks not is either an old ass nigga or a hater and needs to listen to section.80. looking forward to good kid in a mad city.

      1. K.dot is the new K.dot. Nobody is taking Tupacs place, he has his own lane and is immortalized through his music. Kendrick is good and section.80 was the best music ive heard in a long time but to say he has already taken the spot of a legend like that? fuck outta here…Kendrick has the potential to become a legend but lets be clear. hes not replacing shit.

      2. I agree with Fado, nobody is replacing Pac nor should they try to. Pac didn’t come in the game trying to be somebody else, Big didn’t, Nas didn’t, Em didn’t. What makes them all great is that they took their own lane and ran with it, if Kendrick does this he will be around for a long while.

    10. How much did Section 80 sell exactly?, i never hear anybody talking about the exact figures, anybody know?

      1. no I say what does it matter if I love the album, my all time favourite album is The Marshall Mathers LP but I don’t care about how much it sold.

      1. oh of course here, we got another member of the hipster academy

nigga if you don’t wanna hear about him don’t click on it. There was 5 fuckin articles a day bout 50 cent before 50 cent dropped his mixtape, I don’t care about him so I don’t click on him. as a result you don’t hear about 50 as much…

it’s always the next best shit that ain’t talked about with you niggas, kendrick got a buzz n a gold watch, people start to listen what he saying, you gon start hollering about the stupidest ish. hell naw, kendrick lamar is that shit

      1. yo kendrick is pretty ill. but im hearin ya on the last emperor. i bump him n bishop lamont daily. aftermath fucked up one these dudes

    11. Hopefully theres no delays, if they want kendrick to be successful they need to cash in his buzz now before it goes

      1. 100% back your comment, Kendrick ain’t no Mainstream rapper so they audience he has appealed to is the audience he is always gonna get.

      1. allright tthen lets fuck in the bathroom in the floor baby it’s goind down tonight leave your problems at the door baby it’s going down tonight

    12. Anybody who uses the term “dickrider” is fuckin stupid. It’s just become an ignorant ass persons word for fan. You lose all credibility for your statements when you use it.

      1. not really, because if a nigga who hates a rapper comes on every one of his articles to talk shit on him, it’s well justified to call him a hater.

clicking on his song, just to talk shit? justified to call him a hater.

you’d think these anti-YMCMB soldiers would not click on Wayne/Drake beats here, but guess what… they do, and they won’t stop doing it. bonafide haters.

you’re only a dickrider if you post some bullshit explanation to defend a rapper when he’s clearly in the wrong/doing something unorthodox

      2. There are some legit dickriders though…people who go out of their way to defend an artist as if their lives depend on it, and refuse to accept others have differing opinions to their own. That’s a proper dickrider.

      3. ^^^^^
I agree with you this niggas defend people that don’t even KNOW them!!! Now that’s what I call bullshit!

    13. Why people hatin on kendrick? how can you anyway i don’t understand.. Dre working with him for a reason like he did with em. i’m not making any comparisons eminem is def. the g.o.a.t but this guy has some serious talent. record sales don’t mean shit hiphop doesn’t sell like it used to! Kendrick can sell only 10,000 copies his first week and still get album of the year. Its not about the sales if you’re a true hiphop head then you understand its about the music.. the message they sending. Kendrick’s section 80 was most def. the bible of our generation. How the fuck can you hate him? He gets major respect in the game if you don’t like what he has to offer change the fuckin station!

    14. HAHAHA overrated? kendricks fans are “dick riders”? to be honest i don’t want kendrick to go mainstream at all.. that will really show who’s dick riding. respect the mans craft and what he brings to hiphop because you might not get this kind of talent again. why do you think so many other artist are trying to collab or work with him in some kind of way?.. skill recognize skill and thats real. Get a clue all you criticizing ass people!

    15. Sorry my opinion but I can’t fuck with this guy music. This guy music is boring and corny as fuck. Good luck to him and his fans though.

    16. “Why people hatin on kendrick?”

^ see, they’re not. They’re making “excuses” not to buy an album they never had any intention of buying in the first place.

Mixtapes are free, comment section postings are free, CD’s in the store cost money. I’m even convinced the stans & trolls do not even buy the music of their favorites. It’s easy to champion and “hate” someone online.

These are the people who put all types of negative energy out there because they know they can’t be checked for the nonsense, but they believe in karma. Go figure.

    17. People on these comments tryin to spit knowledge. If you dont like what HiphopDX posts dont go to this website smh

      1. Yet you want to exercise your freedom of speech but others cannot? hhdx is located in Canada, they are not protected by the US Constitution, violate their own terms of usage and know they are in contempt of international internet laws. Shall I continue?

The majority of users here are not buying music, they are abusing the internet and the charts prove this train of thought. I pay for my internet service and purchase my music in retail stores, I have every right to be here more so than a So Icy Boi who has 12 different screen names to post nothing but nonsensical jargon.

Feel free to continue on with THAT “knowledge” you’re kicking. I must have described you personally.

    18. kendrick lamar is ok i guess , but he is overhyped though . just like alot of artist are today .

    19. WORDS THAT ARE GETTING OLD AND LAME
      1. TROLL
      2. DICKRIDER
      3. RATCHETT
      4. SWAGGER
      5. YOLO
      6. HIPSTER

      ADD ON

      1. COSIGN on “Rachet” I hate that word. I agree with ETK, “Sellout” gets used way too much.

    20. This nigga ain’t finna release shit unless Stunna gives the go ahead. Birdman pullin all of the strings in the rap game. Anyone on YMCMB and MMG always got the green light to put an album out.

      1. I can tell you dont know shit about the industry lol. Birdman pullin all the strings?, that’s a joke. Jimmy Iovine is who I think you meant to say. And that’s only for interscope. not including sony and the other big ass corporations.

      2. This guy really say stunna and mmg? ur a fucking moron.. why would those 2 have the say so on when to release an album? The label you are under has the say so.. get ur head outta ymcmb and mmg’s ass!

    21. I dont like most hiphop fans nowadays. An artist (like Kendrick or whoever) grinds year after year and when they finaly blow up they are “overhyped”. No its called over worked, grinding day and night while alot of yall were on the computer bitching about whatever artist was “overhyped” three years ago. Its a hiphop website, Kendrick is considered one of the best newcomers right now regardless of if you like him or not. So yes hiphopdx is gonna cover every update about his debut album. IF you listened too section.80 you would know he deserves all the attention hes getting. The only rappers that are over hyped right now are 2chainz and future.

      1. Exactly, all of a sudden all real fans are ‘dickriders’ and the artist is ‘overhyped’. Atleast they need to listen more of the music and take time to understand it before giving a judgement.

    22. Oct is too far to survive on Women, Weed, and Weather. He still needs THAT record to keep his buzz going (and build more). I’m sure he’ll drop something new soon.

    23. Kendrick is sweet. Can’t wait for this album. The C4, Overly Dedicated, Section.80, and now Good Kid In A Mad City. I think he’s gonna release something before it drops.

      1. Nigga you trippin because of THIS?!?!?!

    24. K.Dot’s got razor sharp lyrics….but when it comes to his flow and delivery he’s below average….i’m a fan of his lyrics not his music as such…and yes ken’s fans are biggest “dickriders”…y’all can’t suck it up that K.Dot’s no mainstream rapper and Dr. Dre is probably gon’ pull up a “bishop lamont” on this guy too…dre never cares about talent all he cares is about making money…old snoop had the streets on lock then “the white guy” then fif then Game…he only cares about money and nothing else

      1. Great point, and true. If your statement was false Dre would have BEEN released a classic with ZERO commercial appeal…but he will consider anything less than platinum a fail and blemish on the face of his career.

      2. lol r u serious kendricks flow and delivery r below average r u deaf? who in ur mind is better with the flow and delivery then
        lol?

      3. how many emcee’s you think can kill rigamortis like kendrick did my dude. just cause you dont like his flow doesnt mean its bad it just means thats your opinion my dude

    25. FUCK RIGHT KDOT! This is great news. Dre is a legend and his cosign is major but this is a wise move. Earn your stripes. He was only thwarting your process and false-starting your career.

    26. diz gon be a flo. 20k first week. diz nigga is talentless and boring. hiz beats arent dance and I dont understand his wack ass lyrics. swag

      best rappers:

      1. Lil Wayne
      2. Drake
      3. Rick Ross
      4. Gucci Mane
      5. Nicki Minaj
      6. Waka Flocka
      7. 2 Chainz
      8. 2Pac
      9. Meek Mill
      10. Tyga

      1. first time in my whole life I agree with you Kendrick is lame but so is Lil Wayne and the whole YMCMB

      2. Bashing K.Dot then putting Waka up there with the “best” rappers is fucking laughable. Go dance to Beiber if you don’t like raw lyricism

      3. lil rich withe must know all of there faggots isn’t rapper Just 2pac ..don’t Mix the category Like pop & rap man ..you’re patehtic

      4. man you are either totally ignorant or the best troll on the planet. i am really hoping you are the latter, lol.

      5. I know you’re a troll and all but you failed to do your research. If he were to sell 20,000 in its first week it would be his most successful release to date.

      6. if all of them togeether(besides 2pac)had a had a rap battle against kendrick they would all be leavin in fuckin caskets.

    27. He’s an average emcee at best.

      SpaceGhostPurp
      Vado
      Reks
      Five Mics
      A$AP Crew (any member)
      Childish Gambino

Are way more talented that this kid…anywayz much success with the album K Dot.

      1. @Trent…I’m on hip hop fam I got a rack of emcee’s on deck that could give K Dot a run for his money in the booth son. Just for fun I’m going to throw the name Seth Narley out there i’ll let you do the research.

      2. Gambino’s a better writer, Kendrick’s a better rapper. IMO anyway.
Reks definitely just needs some good production for a change (like part of REKS).

      3. @88…I fuck with Seth heavily loved his verse on the “Where U Going” track with Rav P and Varcity I thought he held his own he also murk that “Gripping Woodgrain” joint to.

      4. I’m feeling these at the moment

SpaceGhostPurrp + the whole Raider Klan
        A$AP Nast
        Fat Trel
Kendrick and Ab-Soul (haven’t heard much of Jay Rock)

      1. still hiiipower if your gonna support your artist and his movement atleast have knowledge of what your supporting.. he had it right with “good kid, m.A.A.d city” .. well almost

    28. HEEELL Y EEEZZZ NIKKKAS

    29. I CAN’T WAIT TIL THIS MAN DROPS HIS ALBUM AND PROVES TO ALL U CRITICIZING ASS MAINSTREAM FANS THAT HE IS THE NEXT BIG THING! U DENY BECAUSE THATS WHAT UR USED TO IS MAINSTREAM! UR USED TO SIMPLE RAP. U DON’T WANT TO HEAR SHIT THAT MAKES U THINK BECAUSE UR BRAIN IS SO FRIED FROM ALL THE BULLSHIT U LISTEN TO THAT U CAN’T PROCESS WHAT HE’S TRYING TO SAY.

HE WILL GO DOWN IN HIPHOP HISTORY AS ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME THATS FOR DAMN SURE!

      1. “U DON’T WANT TO HEAR SHIT THAT MAKES U THINK BECAUSE UR BRAIN IS SO FRIED FROM ALL THE BULLSHIT U LISTEN TO THAT U CAN’T PROCESS WHAT HE’S TRYING TO SAY.”

I don’t like that it’s all in caps but words are so true.

      2. sorry…but mainstream rap fans are not gonna listen to kendrick lamar…so if yall think he is gonna blow up THINK AGAIN. i listen to nothing but underground hip-hop and i don’t even like kendrick lamar’s music. dudes voice is fucking annoying.

      3. You thick fuck we know Kendrick can’t go mainstream his lyrics are too intelligent, don’t be thinking you’re breaking news…

      4. I never said anything about kendrick going mainstream you dumbfucks!! and idgaf if you don’t listen to kendrick i didnt put this into a form of a question.. bite your tongues don’t respond to my shit

      1. If you notice the name of the post and the name of the comment then you would noticed i didn’t say that.. read carefully next time

    30. That’s right keep the money in the family. Why give these over priced ass producers what already got you to where you are. Good move right because eventually they’ll get the shine to where others will want to work with them. TDE keep the making the best moves for their team to take over when that other water down garbage team disappears.

    31. kendrick needs a single with a big name producer otherwise this album will not sell over 75,000 copies in the first week. it will be big krit all over again.

      1. i know his album will be quality, but in order to make an impact on the rap industry and actually change things you have to sell records. i want more conscious rap in the mainstream and the only way to have that happen is for conscious rappers to sell more. you are not going to change anything with 50000 records sold in the first week.

    32. meh. more importantly does anyone know when bow wow’s underrated dropping? THAT’s a record imma cop first day.

we in da club. ymcmb swagga

    33. So it is apparent that Birdman, the king of the rap industry, gave Kendrick the “okay” on releasing this news. Wonder who’s next to get his golden permission…

      1. Was that supposed to be a joke?? I am so confused by this comment.. don’t know if someone is trying to be funny or if they actually think this..

    34. In more important news, Pitbull’s 1st single off his 7th album, Global Warming, has dropped!!

      Get It Started (feat. Shakira)

Time to polish them dancin shoes!!!!!

    35. I can’t understand so many idiots declaring that Kendrick somehow needs a “big name producer” and a radio single to get anywhere or sell records. Who cares about that when good music should only matter? Kendrick has been on top of his game precisely because he’s not going the way of making corporate-sponsored radio rap just to sell overproduced garbage for money.

The best news about his LP is that his longtime in-house TDE guys are handling most of the production, and I’m sure Just Blaze, Dre, and maybe Pharrell will have a track or two each. If that. His records and albums have been solid for the exact reason his own guys and label mates are doing their own thing, making consistently great shit, and riding high on their own talent and style.

Hip-hop has some of the dumbest fans in existence because so many of them are programmed to only follow hype and what they think “most people” think is hot even if it’s just corporate radio mush. They pay attention to which familiar name is producing a track than the actual track, and rank rappers on their income than their albums. When did it become about everything but the actual music? Good on Kendrick and Black Hippy for keeping up what they’ve been doing in the first place and not selling out, and the rest of us will support them for making halfway decent music while the rest ignore it because the credits aren’t riddled with just who they believe is hot.

      1. Because if he sells alot of records, mainstream labels will start signing people like him, and we can get good rap on the radio.

      2. They probably say he needs radio tracks to boost his audience to people that usually won’t try something new but would learn to like him if they gotta chance to listen to him on the radio otherwise idk cause dude is nice.

      3. I agree but unfortunately, you need that hit record that is going to rake in those casual hip hop fans(not ones scouring the internet for the next big thing)to sell. Just the way it is.

    36. good thing dre is not touching his album cause lately anything he touches turns to coal(i need a doctor).

    37. Listen, I know guys like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and other mainstream rappers are aligned with the NWO agenda but the truth is that most underground rappers are a part of the act too. Like how in the world is Vinnie Paz anti-illuminati when he has a group called Jedi Mind Tricks or Army of the Pharaohs? Don’t give that 5 Percenter rappers like Wu-Tang Clan or K-Rino preach the truth. They are dupes, they say some truth but twist it up with false demonic messages. Think about it, the real leaders of the illuminati are in private so they are like the underground rappers who refuse to be acknowledge by the common people. The political leaders are the mainstream acts like Obama would be like Jay-Z, known worldwide and have a bigger impact. But the underground is as demonic as the mainstream. Stop defending them.

      1. It’s people like you who have corrupt music with false knowledge. We are all on the outside looking in as spectators nothing more. Now days one mans truth is another mans truth. Don’t be deceived you fool gain your own knowledge, seek your own truth! And last but not least let music be music it’s for your entertainment.. You know who you are and what your beliefs are.. None of that nonsense should apply to you. So why care?

    38. LOL, why are people trolling KDOT? The dude is making nice music, all you fuckboys need to listen to what Kendrick gotta say forreal!

    39. Sounds dope, looking forward to the new album. I didn’t fully understand why everybody was so behind Section .80 (It was a good release, but to me was overrated), but you can’t deny his origionality and his subject matter. His mixtape with J Cole is gonna be the illest collaberation effort since Nas and Damian Marley.

      1. You said it yourself, originality and subject matter plus he got support from a younger audience may not have that much exposure in hip hop

      2. To be honest kendrick lamar was the first artist that i actually wanted to support, because his music is influential, mind-blowing, inspiring, and just all out real. but im glad i could find an artist that actually gets to make good music and its about whatever he wants to rap about GOD BLESS KENDRICK LAMAR and the rest of black hippy yall keep making that good music.

    40. His album won’t make an impact on sales because his fan base is trained to down load his music for free. Everybody is saying he’s really good if he’s good lets see if his fans will come out an pay for his music. The music business is just that a business. I don’t see him making an impact. Here are all the new school rappers in the last five years (Drake, Nicki, and Wiz) to have commercial success (i.e. touring on a stadium level and.or gold platinum album) everyone had a break out radio hit. You need that hit to expand your brand “true hip hop fans” are a small demographic. Name a main stream label act in the last five years to put out a studio album without a radio single. Big Sean said that he didn’t want to do the Chris Brown single for radio. No I.D *(Executive producer) said to him due you want to be known as a mixtape rapper. I see him (lamar) being a new NAS (lyrical but can’t expand beyond that true hip hop label). Nas runs circles around Jay Z but Jay Z understood that its a business not a battle for being called the best lyricist. Jay z isn’t the most successful rapper because he’s a lyricist its because he’s a business man.

      1. Curren$y made billboard top 10 without a radio single, and that’s a fanbase that’s trained to download music for free but they came out to support him when he dropped his album because he gave them all that free music. If you don’t think Kendrick’s album will have an impact on sales you have a sad misconception of the industry.

      2. Same goes for KRIT. Kendrick will do well in the future. He won’t be a pop star like Drake and Nicki, but he’ll be around for a long time.

      3. REAL HIP HOP FANS BUY THE ALBUM TO SUPPORT THE ARTIST.. FUCK ALL THIS FREE DOWNLODE SHIT ITS ALL MIXED BY SUM PICE OF SHIT DJ THAT AINT KNOWN THEN THEY FUCK UP THE SONG BY PUTING A FUCKERD UP INTRO FOR THE DJ…. DONT BE A PUSSY AND DOWNLODE FREE MUSIC UR JUST KILLING RAP AT LEAST GO ON ITUNES

    41. good to see a young rapper with skills getting all this attention..he’s not a fat former C.O. living a fantasy life n stealing another person’s identity

    42. “Interscope/Aftermath/Top Dawg Entertainment release”

      – too many going for a bite at one slice of bread

@ today’s hip hop climate, you don’t need so many considering that Kendrick is going to flop

it don’t matter if Dr Dre or Interscope is behind him, Kendrick is not much hype

    43. former Interscope signee Charles Hamilton is a better lyricist, freestyler & rap artist than Kendrick yet Lamar gets all the support

Interscope & Aftermath are jokes…real lyricist like Last Emperor & Rakim, Charles Ham, Joel Ortiz, Crooked I never received much support then you get average lyricist like Game, Kendrick & 50 Cent getting all the support and their projects see the lights coz they puppets who follow the system based on what’s hot and the delusion that its what people want

      1. ^lol seriously

And Charles Hamilton got punched by a woman, he got ethered at some other point too, forget about him

      2. kid. u need to listen to more kendrick. he shits on all those artists u named. i’ll give u rakim. but this kid has the lyrics and can convert them into damn good songs. get hip black hippy fool

    44. It’s a given that his album sales aren’t going to be through the roof.. he’ll be lucky if he gets 100,000. He’ll be lucky if he sees half of that! But he def deserves credit for his lyrical abilities and the message he’s trying to delivier to his fans. His music is inspiring it really is. If 10 people get the message.. it was a success. Todays hiphop fans search for the one hit wonders they don’t care for story telling.. they don’t like to be told to think.. His music makes you have to research what he’s implying in his songs. I mean if it’s that hard for you folks to understand goto rapgenius.com the sources are there. Some of his songs can somewhat educate they really can. I expect this dude to be around for a while. May not have a huge impact on mainstream but will def. shed his light on the underground. I’m without a doubt buying the album! Support your artist!

    45. Lamar has a great flow. This kid’s potential is through the roof. Whether his shit sells or not, his lyrical ability is amongst the best of newer rappers if not the best. As long as he keeps it real, he’ll do fine.

    46. good kid, m.A.A.d city. oct 2 It’s a reason why Kendrick Lamar (K-DOT) is on Aftermath/Interscope. It’s very good to see again in music a new generation of great MC’s. Kendrick Lamar is in my TOP 3 (Nas, 2 Pac, Kendrick Lamar). m.A.A.d city droppin October 2. This will be the BEST album this year! Also check out “The Recipe” with a feature from Dr. Dre DUBSTEP REMIX releasing 7/2/12 this Monday http://snd.sc/O3GSMh

    47. I don’t know why people are making a big deal out of sales numbers. everyone knows that’s not where money is anymore. He’ll make hella bread from touring. There’s people in London going to his shows to see a nigga from Compton, CA. Im sure he’ll do just fine. black hippy kills all
