Vic Mensa pulled no punches during his appearance on Complex’s Everyday Struggle. The Manuscript rapper unleashed a barrage of criticism toward DJ Akademiks when the panel began discussing the topic of Chicago rap.
Akademiks asked Vic about the MC’s thoughts on Hip Hop commentators outside of Chicago commenting on the city’s violence. The question set Vic off as he took issue with the online personality’s exploitation of his hometown.
“I wanted to slap you in your face, honestly,” Mensa told Akademiks. “And I’m just seeing you here. I’m like this is a tame environment, so I will keep it to my words. But I really feel as if people exactly like you sensationalize and made a following off of clowning situations that we go through in real life. And I think niggas ain’t have no right. You specifically, you ain’t never had a right. What ever made you feel like you had a space to have a perspective on our people dying on a daily basis?”
Akademiks countered by saying he tried to provide a different perspective. He claimed he was not glorifying the violence like others did, but Mensa didn’t agree and condemned Akademiks’ sensationalism.
“There was nothing constructive about it,” Mensa said of Akademiks’ coverage. “And I’ma tell you the truth — I really think you a bitch. Because there’s a video that you put up that about a person named Tray 57, making all these jokes like, ‘Here’s another Chiraq savage. Like this guy’s stupid. He messed with the Grim Reaper.’ Like nigga, this is not a video game. That’s a nigga I grew up with that I’ve known since I was five years old. And to see you come on the Internet and like with the corny ass little voice and make jokes about it, I was waiting to see you. And it’s a couple of people waiting to see you. I heard you say you didn’t wanna come to Chicago when I sat down ’cause you clearly know. You really couldn’t even stand outside.”
Mensa finished off his lambasting of Akademiks by making it clear that his issues with the man are very serious. The Roc Nation artist detailed how the situation would be different if they weren’t in the public eye.
“You really built a following off clowning our deaths,” Mensa said. “People that I really know. And you know what’s fucked up about it and why I said the things I said to you is because were we to be in a room and there’s no cameras, there’s no security, you see us, you wouldn’t make no jokes. You wouldn’t make a single joke.”

This guy says death like they are dying from natural causes and not from piss poor decisions based on ego. This guy basically says that without the threat of violence they will be laughed at. Ridiculed. Joked about. And he’s right! BUT SOMEHOW CAN’T SEE HOW WRONG THAT IS. rappers make me lmfao while smh.
well damn, he looks like a complete fucking tool
Man. Akademiks will get his someday. Not a Vic fan, but glad he said what he said.
journalist cant be journalist no more…smh
Smh man it’s amazing how sensitive these rappers are. Hollering all day about violence on records and can’t handle critique.
Did you listen to the AK recording? He was making light of the shooting and he was also speculating about who did it lol not cool anywhere. Since when did Vic Mensa become a violent rapper?
Man you seriously have one HELL of a mental disability
You sound like an uneducated sewer rat nobody takes you seriously
Vic Mensa is right, Akademiks has a loose tongue that has turned from an asset into a liability. You can only be so safe with a headset and XBOX One account, he will be held accountable for his words soon enough…
Joe over there like “I can see both sides….”
Homie checked him on some real s… Lol that was good and joe sitting on the side he scared for his life that corny ass ni…
Are any of you dummies from here??? Your really think this is an ego thing….?
Come to the Go and find out for yourselves why shit goin down. Government dropping of AR-15s in the hood talkin bit they stolen…lol. Education is key B4 you open ya mouth goof ass dummies.
Yep its always the government or someone elses fault get the fuck over it and make some change
Djf it is the government’s fault and this problem goes all the way to the 1960s. Another reason Chicago is the way it is is because there is no joy in the city and people have emotional trauma
Chicago cats are remedial you are proof
If the government is dropping off AR-15s, don’t pick them up and use them to kill people that look like you.
exactly only kill poeple that dont look like you.
akademics likes to run his mouth on shit he knows nothing about smh
Motherf*ckers killing each other on daily basis for absolutely no good reason. Stop acting like its rocket science. Its just dumb people doing dumber sh*t. Its not that complicated
These rappers are all a bunch of feminine little bitches now a days. How do you morons still follow this garbage? How dare somebody have a perspective on people on chicago killing each other? What gave him the right to have an opinion? Is this petulant little child serious? These cats really think they are bullies but nobody is intimidated.
You saying DJ Akademiks has no right to be giving his opinion or stance on what is going on in Chicago cuz he aint from chicago is the same as if we said the United States of America has no right to be talking or giving their stance on what is going on in the middle east. We have to report the shit that goes on in Chicago and find a solution!
U misinterpreted. Thats what i was saying champ. I was mocking vic mensa for acting like that.
this is the same situation with charlamagne and birdman.
“why be tough on a radio guy?” in this situation, youtube guy?
vic, did you pull up on lil reese who supposedly killed your friend? or if it wasn’t him, did you go find someone who did and pull up on them? no? cos you pussy? but noooooooooooooo cos you don’t want real smoke but you wanna be mad at someone who talked about it on youtube and front him and be all gangsta on him tho right?
foh bitch ass vic
vic dj never clowned your friends, why not pull up on your friends killer than a local dj,what a bitch boi
vic mensa is a fucking bitch and everybody knows, people in chicago is stupid and everybody knows
you stupid and a bitch
I’ve tried to understand DJ akademiks relevance, and i still don’t get it. I’m glad there are still people left who are not afraid to check cats when they cross the line, instead of hiding behind walls.
His relevance is that he’s a self made young black man who made a lane for himself in the industry on his own by being a smart entrepreneur and doing for self as far as building a following by providing hip hop content and commentary.
his lane was tongue-in-cheek commentary on the drill scene in chicago….ironically, while you seem to be willing to give akademiks a level of respect for his ingenuity and entrepreneurial ways it seems he couldn’t afford the same modicum of respect to the artist he disparaged in order to create ‘content’.
My 14 year old kid sister could knock the living shit out of Vic Mensa.
Being in Chicago I’m conflicted about it all. On one hand, Akademiks IS furthering himself off the senseless deaths of black youth. On the other hand, these young rappers are glorifying their own destruction themselves. Not even for money, but for street fame. So how can I feel bad about it when they’re on IG making a mockery of their own situation.
