Joe Budden is apparently done with Spotify. On Wednesday (August 26), The Joe Budden Podcast host spent the bulk of his three-hour show dismantling his exclusive deal with the streaming giant, explaining why he wouldn’t be renewing his contract when it expires next month.
“September 23rd, I cannot tell you where this podcast will be,” Budden said. “But as it stands, I can tell you where it will not be, and that is Spotify. Spotify never cared about this podcast individually. Spotify only cared about our contribution to the platform.”
He added his podcast has been “undermined and undervalued” and cited a $250 million deal with Bill Simmons for The Ringer, which he said shows Spotify is “actively pitting [these signings] against us.”
Budden also accused the company of “pillaging’ his audience, saying, “You pillage the audience from the podcast, and you’ve continued to pillage each step of the way without any regard” for the listeners.
In a statement to Variety, a Spotify rep said the company attempted to renegotiate with Budden but failed.
“It was our desire to keep Joe Budden on Spotify,” the rep said. “As Joe referenced on his show, we made him a considerable offer — one that was significantly larger and many times the value of the existing agreement and reflective of the current market and size of his audience. Unfortunately, we could not come to terms and we respect his wishes to find a new home for his show.”
Budden’s response? “Fuck y’all & that deal.”
Budden, once deemed “the Howard Stern of Hip Hop” by the New York Times, initially launched his podcast in 2015 and signed an exclusive deal with Spotify in 2018. The Joe Budden Podcast also features his friends Jamil “Mal” Clay and Rory Farrell.
Although it was ranked at No. 1 on Spotify’s podcast chart last year, it currently sits at No. 15. Budden has roughly seven episodes left before his contract is up. Listen to the August 26 episode in full above.
He leaves for being undervalued. Rogan gets paid 9 figures. Sounds like Spotify knows what’s up. Hey Buddens, perform “Pump it up” a few times then STFU already. You owe everything you have to Just Blaze and Eminem. Talentless hack!
This dude always blames somebody else for his problems. Debut flopped? Def jams fault. Slaughterhouse flopped? Eminems fault. Podcast problems? Spotify’s fault. And all that is before you get into his 10,000 rap beefs or trainwreck of a personal life. Dude is a basket case and its known. Anybody who deals with him at this point is getting what they deserve
Definitely and I allways thought his name sounded more like a plumber…
Hate em or love em, Joe is a huge voice in hip hop. The only reason I downloaded Spotify was for the podcast
Congratulations, i don’t think Spotify is gonna miss you
Wow. You have terrible taste. The only thing worse than a delusional idiot is someone dumb enough to follow.
Exactly! And he leaves I will be deleting the app.
If you leave every situation with grievence, it´s probably you not them. Stay humble, say deal wasn´t for you, but instead “fuck that deal”, real mature.
This racist thinks he’s Joe Rogan
Actually he doesn’t. He said Rogan was in a whole different league for other podcasters
Because of his audience demographic Buttons said … low key shade … aka he’s white … because all of Buttons problems are because of “white devils” … then this clown has the nerve to talk about wage disparity while he makes millions to sit around circle jerking with his white cousin Tobys while real workers make 9 dollars an hr working their lives away for 40 hrs or more a week for multi-billion dollar companies … that’s disparity … fucking entertainers think they deserve mansion money … bitch please … they are all dancing clowns that you people worship …. if all the real workers in this society stopped working … society would be over … not the same for Buttons and the rest of these celebrities
If all the “real workers” stopped working, they’d be replaced with immigrants tomorrow. Stop concerning yourself with another man’s pockets and step your game up. Then you’re poor ass wouldn’t have to come to this website crying.
Stop crying sounds like a rich white republican lmao anyone that tells someone else not to shed light on real problems is either a politician or a cop lmao
I member that interview when he yelled at Lil Yachty, shit was hilarious
If the JBP wasn’t offered $100 million, then I can see why he’s feeling some type of way. That podcast has brought listeners over to Spotify, and it might sound arrogant, but the amount of listenership, courted by the JBP, is probably what helped Rogan decide to move over to that platform.
100 million?!? Where the hell you getting that valuation from? lol. Joe does his numbers but his audience isn’t nearly on the level of a Joe Rogan to warrant that type of contract
That number was the same offer, that Joe Rogan accepted. I know what your saying in terms of popularity, Rogan is outta here, but my point was that Joe Budden grew his podcast using Spotify’s platform, and in turn the wider audience grew from that, getting Rogan’s attention. If you think the Joe Budden Podcast doesn’t deserve a large bag based off popularity, that’s fine, that’s your metrics, but that’s where you and I fundamentally disagree.
I can tell you that Joe Rogan has never heard of Joe Buttons or his gossip podcast lmfao Rory is that you lmfao
Im pretty sure the only two people that know ‘Joe Buttons’ are you and The Game. So you’re right.
It doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree. Joe operates in a market where there is supply and demand and usually the market let itself play out in the long run. Your definition of ‘large bag’ is a vague one. Who are you and him to decide that instead of the people who are putting money into it? If he is really that valuable then I’m sure there will be investor willing to come with the money. A good example is Joe rogan announcement. When he announce he signed with Spotify look how fast their stock went up. It was an impulsive move but the markets made it very clear what impact he had. Back to your conversation, the markets determine what his worth is not you two individually disagreeing on fundamentally.
TBH there wasn’t even really a “market” for Podcasts before the JBP. There were no real deals in order. Maybe some youtube change here and there or some other small market apps but nothing like millions of dollars for this kinda work.
Has Joe Budden ever had a working relationship with anyone that he didn’t manage to turn into a beef? It’s always someone else’s fault with this guy. I respect him as a lyricist, but as a person he’s a complete dickhead. Oh well, good luck with the gossip column.
You’re not Joe Rogan… Piss off
The Howard Stern of Hip Hop is Adam 22
Who the raised you!
Joe Budden is nowhere near Howard Sterns level
If there’s a direct correlation between people streaming JBP and subscribing to Spotify Premium, then they need to offer the team money according to that. JBP is also a big part of hip-hop today and it needs to be recognised. I see someone here comparing Joe Rogan…..how does that apply to hiphop culture in the era of streaming? Spotify claimed it was due to spend $500 million on Podcast acquisitions, but for whatever reason, they don’t want to keep JBP happy around the same time Budden is beginning to get his flowers from the media. The show needs to be cultivated, not undermined. I get it.
Getting flowers from who? I don’t think I’ve ever read anything positive in regards to Joe and his podcast, he seems to just use it as a platform to mouth off and talk gossip. If that’s how he gets his money, cool, we’re all trying to make a living. But let’s call it as it is. And I seriously doubt anyone is paying to listen to this guy on Spotify when they can do it for free on YouTube.
Well shit, if he gets his tired ass simp ass bitch friend mal out maybe they can go deeper in convos. He plays his simp ass card all the time as if he’s the only one that knows how to treat a woman and this bitch don’t even have a woman!! Females can spot he’s a simp
Real talk…. his show really isnt that great anyway
shouldve taken the 100k and the endless supply of newports for the duration of the contract that Spotify offered and been happy
Joe Budden always claims to be so much more valuable and yet he always end up having shitty deals. Maybe Joe isn’t as valuable as he thinks? I don’t even think his podcast is that good. Nobody is excited to hear Budden with the other 2 corny dudes talk let alone talk for 3 hours. The only exciting moment was when he went back and forth with Eminem but that’s was because em going back and forth during the kamikaze Era was entertainment itself.
