A veteran of the Iraq war is calling out Jim Jones for a comment he made comparing rappers to soldiers. The Dipset MC said being a rapper is “more dangerous” than being a solider, which the vet evidently found offensive.
The vet, who goes by the Instagram handle @mramcore, told Jones, “Heard the comments you made about ‘being a rapper is harder than fighting a war in Iraq…’ You allowed to have your opinion without any facts nor truth to it, but as a Vet and hip hop fan, I found it extremely disrespectful and ignorant.
“Here’s some facts, my unit which fought in Iraq 2004 lost more Marines in two months than ‘rappers’ in the past 3 years. Keep talking but there is zero comparison.”
In response, Jones went on a social media tirade, doubling down on his original point.
“Here are facts,” he wrote. “Every nigha I grew up wit is either dead or in jail, so u wanna compare death tolls it won’t add up. u went to army n met nighas U never knew or grew up wit. I grew up wit all these nighas all my life so it different. u wanna continue this debate. Yal was shooting at kids n innocent bystanders in the midst of shootin at the enemy. We was kids shootin at kids. That mentality split over to success.

“Remember u knew who ur enemies were. we don’t and everybody knows who we are because of our notoriety. so how u protect urself from enemies u can’ see. We all wear the same uniform. Everyone is drippy. But y’all had American uniforms on and the enemy had their uniform on. You had the choice of goin to war. We didn’t. We was at war when we was born. Let the church say.”
He also shared the exchange on his own Instagram account, writing in the caption, “Is this opinion or facts I need answers y’all. Like I said being a rapper is 1 of the most dangerous jobs on this planet.”
However, the vet wasn’t done with Jones quite yet. He later shared further commentary on the subject via Instagram and explained he wanted a chance to talk to Jones face to face.
“You want to compare a lifestyle choice in comparison to somebody that not only subjects themselves to danger protecting their loved ones, but people they don’t even know,” he said. “When you get into the rap game you’re doing it for what? Money. Not every single rapper, but you know who those rappers are — those are the ones who don’t get caught in the mainstream rap.”

Being a rapper is not even slightly dangerous. It becomes dangerous when you are a public figure who runs their mount, disrespecting people, and playing the role of a gangster for fun. That’s what Tupac did. If Tupac never signed with death row records, and stuck to his uplifting, respectful music, he wouldn’t have been killed. Going gangster got him mixed up with loads of thugs, and they had enough of him.

Tupac was almost killed (studio shooting) before he signed to Death Row. He then went to prison and when he came out (suge knight got him out) he made music for Death Row. While I agree with your point overall, you cant use Pac as the example. Also the police beat the shit out of Pac, gave him “learn to be a nigga” scars, the police are supposed to be your friends. That’s part of Jim Jones’s point, however he is still wrong.

As a vet and a Brooklynite my brother Jim Jones there is no comparison to what our brothers and sisters go through in the military and War time situations. My brother you lose soldiers in the streets that we grew up with play basketball with hustle with but there’s a big difference when you lose a brother in combat so there’s no comparison
As an Iraqi Freedom III vet, I will echo most sentiments and say this argument is misguided at best.
They are both right in their own rights. They lost people to traumatizing events. It takes its toll on your judgement. But, I still feel Jim Jones is out of line for comparing death through street ignorance to death through organised warfare. I side with the Iraqi vet on this one!!!

The substance of Jim Jones’ argument is still misguided but the way he frames it is wrong. He should have just argued that growing up in the hood is more dangerous than being a soldier. It’s still an illogical comparison. But it’s more defensible than what he did say. The substance of his argument even seems to drop the “rapper” part of the equation. I get what he’s trying to argue. But these sorts of comparisons–one tragedy to another–never work out well.

Being a rapper is not inherently dangerous. When was the last time someone took a shot at Talib Kweli or Lupe Fiasco, or, say EPMD or Run DMC back in the day?
Being a Blood, as Jim Jones is, is dangerous. You could argue that growing up in certain environments, it’s extremely difficult not to make a choice not to be a gang member. But for Jim Jones as a 40+ year old man who was advising Mel Matrix to “violate” Tekashi just about a year or so ago on a phone, at this point, any danger he’s in, is his own stupid damn fault. Is anyone taking shots at any member of the Wu these days? Nope.

As a fellow Army Veteran myself,I totally agree with you 100 percent that you can’t compare the two at all. The physical, spiritually, and psychologically taxing which effect could last possible for years, decades, or the rest of your life. The streets life of a rapper doesn’t compare to the convoys, the mountains,the checkpoints,mortar attacks, constantly being shot at, IEDs,MAIEDs, EFPs,ambushes by ally-turned-enemy, potential to be attacked by women and children, harsh living environments….we have rules, morals, and regulations to follow. I can’t believe Jim Jones has the audacity to say that being in the military is easy…and that him as a rapper staying in the streets wasn’t even a choice for him….um….no technically he chose to stay in the streets even when he had many different opportunity to completely separate himself from that element but chose not to… that’s his own fault….he chose that… there’s plenty of other successful artist that were able to leave that lifestyle with no issues and walk away without a scratch.
