In order to spread the word of volunteering and community service across America, the House Education Committee held their first congressional meeting yesterday to talk about ways of increasing the number of participants for events like the National Day of Service, created by President Barack Obama.

Among other key speakers, R&B singer Usher was in attendance representing his own volunteer organization, The New Look Foundation. The meeting, which occurred in our nation’s capital, tackled several other issues including “going green” and getting younger Americans involved in volunteering for their communities.

In other community service news, the Black Eyed Peas were recently given the Spirit of Life award for their contributions to the Children Uniting Nations organization.

Daphna Ziman, the founder of C.U.N., expressed his gratitude to celebrities like the Black Eyed Peas who take time out of their busy schedules to make a difference in a child’s life. “It was amazing to me how much support we were given this year from celebrities, performers and attendees that genuinely want to help our children in need. I am so very thankful of all those who support Children Uniting Nations and the children we serve.”
