Brooklyn-bred rapper Talib Kweli [click to read] has kept himself busy as of late working with his Blacksmith artists, performing live shows, and putting in his own work at the studio. Speaking with blogsite KevinNottingham.com, Kweli touched on his and Hi-Tek’s [click to read] current project, as well as his take on online self-promotion.
After announcing last year that Reflection Eternal [click to read] was coming back together, Kweli updated fans on their current progress. “I’ve been spending a lot of time in the ‘Nati at Hi-Tek’s studio. We are trying to have it out before the summer on Blacksmith/Warner Brothers.” Giving props to his producing counterpart, Talib continued, “Hi-Tek’s got some heat; he’s still my favorite producer.”
As a rapper who has a handful of websites readily available with music and information for his fans, Kweli gave his take on the use of internet and mixtapes to create a cult following. “It depends on the artist and the material. It worked for [Lil] Wayne because the actual material released was strong enough to get you to keep coming back. I think it worked for Freeway too. He got more press from thinking that up on his own than any publicity budget could have gotten him.”
While denying recent rumors that Prisoner of Consciousness would release this year, Kweli did state that Liberation 2 could see the light of day in 2009. The first Liberation [click to read], released as an online-only album in 2007, was a collaborative project between Kweli and Stones Throw producer Madlib.
