The Hip Hop Theater Festival returns to New York this year, fusing together all aspects of art, culture, and Hip Hop.

“In the past, the Hip Hop Theater Festival focused on introducing the Hip Hop culture to other cities,” says Clyde Valentin, executive director and producer of the event. “This year, we are extremely excited to bring the festival back home.”

The festival was founded in 2000 by author, actor, playwright, and director Danny Hoch, who is best known for his roles in Bamboozled, and Prison Song, and has been featured on HBO Def Poetry. The award-winning actor and New York native will present his own play, Taking Over, at the festival in an effort to take on gentrification in urban areas and to promote thoughtful discussion. His monologues and writings often examine topics in Hip Hop, race, and class.

Hosted at NYU and the Public Theater, The Hip Hop Theater Festival focuses on content written for and about the Hip Hop generation, incorporating elements of graffiti, emceeing, deejaying, Hip Hop dancing, spoken word, and activism.

“It has been such an amazing opportunity to work alongside recognizable organizations such as NYU’s Skirball Center and the Public Theater to educate the city about the culture and art so ingrained in its history,” continues Valentine. “With this collaboration, we believe this is going to be our best festival yet.”

The Hip Hop Theater Festival will run from September 23rd to October 11th. For more information visit www.hhtf.org
