After years penning songs for big names like Rihanna, Mariah Carey and Kelly Rowland, Muni Long solidified herself as a star in her own right last year with her R&B ballad “Hrs and Hrs,” which cracked the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 while becoming a favorite among lovebirds on TikTok.

Long before achieving solo success, the 33-year-old Vero Beach, Florida native crossed paths with another superstar-in-the-making, although their plans to collaborate didn’t quite come off.

In a TikTok video uploaded on Wednesday (April 6), Muni Long revealed she was supposed to do a song with Drake before he blew up, but she ended up ghosting the Toronto native to appease her “jealous” boyfriend (who, needless to say, is now an ex-boyfriend).

“That one time in 2008 I missed out on a Drake feature because my bf at the time found out he was pulling up to the studio and flew into a jealous rage so I chickened out and quit responding to his texts,” she captioned a clip of her applying lip balm during a car journey.

Muni Long shed more light on her relationship with Drake during an interview with Apple Music 1’s Ebro Darden in January, revealing they connected during the making of his 2009 breakout mixtape So Far Gone after he heard her cover of “Best I Ever Had.”

“I recorded a cover of ‘Best I Ever Had’ where I played it on guitar, sang it instead of rapped it,” she said. “That went viral so much that Drake reached out to me, and he was like, ‘Yo, I love what you did with the song.’ He gave me his number, we’re talking. Mind you, I’m just out of high school.

“And I was watching him on Degrassi when I was in middle school and high school. So I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is Aubrey Graham. This is amazing! Wheelchair Jimmy.’ I remember talking to him back then, and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m an actor. I’m trying to get into music. I did this mixtape for Valentine’s Day. Didn’t really take it serious. People love it. I’m singing. Lil Wayne wants to sign me.’”

While Drake has yet to address their history, Muni Long’s music career continues to go from strength to strength, with or without a 6 God collaboration. In March, the slender songstress signed to Def Jam, which came on the heels of the release of her eight-song EP Public Displays of Affection.

“It has been a lifelong goal of mine to be able to bring my gifts to the world,” she said in a statement. “This alignment with Tunji and Def Jam for a global takeover is a literal dream come true.”

Long is currently gearing up to drop her new single “Another” on April 12.
