Myanmar hip hop group Rap Against Junta hopes to rally rappers around the world to join the “Spit Against Junta” rap movement, which invites MCs and the “voices of the oppressed” to submit a 16-bar freestyle over a provided free beat.
On September 23, Thai hip hop collective Rap Against Dictatorship shared the beat and called for Thai rappers to participate. “We need everyone’s voice,” they wrote in Thai.
“Despite the violence and casualties we are facing every single day, directly or indirectly, we believe that expressive rap music is still a powerful weapon to fight against dictators,” Rap Against Junta wrote of the rap movement.

Because of the varying censorship laws in many Asian countries, the group made it clear that they are willing to lend their platform to artists who wish to remain anonymous. “We make sure of your safety and security. We advise some of the artists who could be at risk to creatively hide your identity,” they wrote.
Rap Against Junta is Myanmar’s hip hop scene’s “creative resistance against the Junta that staged an illegitimate coup on Feb 1, 2021. It is an alliance of various artists and groups such as MCs, producers, DJs, sound engineers, promoters, organizers, dancers, graffiti artists, etc.,” according to their YouTube channel. One of their goals is to “bring unity, justice, and peace” using hip hop.
