Black Thought was forced to do a little damage control last month when someone created a fake flyer touting a Fugees and The Roots Verzuz and posted it online.

While that’s an event that’s likely not in the cards, The Roots’ drummer Questlove has revealed the legendary Philly Hip Hop group has found a worthy opponent but won’t say who quite yet.

On Monday (September 20), Questlove responded to a tweet that read, “There really isn’t a single suitable matchup for The Roots in a #Verzuz. They stand alone. And no, do not suggest The Fugees.” He simultaneously revealed The Roots have another album on the way as well.

“Actually,” he began. “We got a nice offer—and a somewhat nice unexpected ‘not capn obvious’ matchup that even I didn’t think about (so obvious) time didn’t allow & I want this album out & see what the temperature is first.”

Of course, Questlove’s tweet piqued fans’ curiosity, and people started to throw out their predictions. But when one person wrote, “Something like Black Thought vs Mos Def or Common makes more sense,” Questlove replied, “That’s Capn Obvious.”

Other suggestions included A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Parliament-Funkadelic, Freestyle Fellowship, Brand New Heavies, Pharcyde, Public Enemy and even the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Black Thought Deads Fugees & The Roots Verzuz Rumor

The Roots haven’t released a studio album since 2014’s …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin. Black Thought, however, has put out multiple solo albums, including 2020’s Streams of Thought, Vol. 3: Cane & Able.
