Kanye West Files Lawsuit Against Roc-A-Fella Records

Kanye West is taking JAY-Z‘s former label Roc-A-Fella Records and EMI Publishing to court because he’s allegedly owed some money, TMZ reports.

According to court documents filed on Friday (January 25), West is hitting Roc-A-Fella Records and Island Def Jam over his rights.

Though the docs are heavily redacted, one gem found among the legal papers obtained by The Blast outlines West and Jigga’s working relationship. It highlights that Ye produced and wrote on JAY’s 2001 classic album The Blueprint and also gives Yeezy credit for “helping revitalize JAY-Z’s career.”

West wants to make it clear that this lawsuit has nothing to do with his old friend Shawn Carter, sources tell TMZ. The Hip Hop luminary sold his shares back in 2004, so Ye’s lawsuit should not be considered a swipe in his direction.

The lawsuit filed against EMI Publishing is heavily redacted as well but is similar to the one filed against The Roc.

EMI has handled Kanye’s publishing since 2003 and the documents show that “there now exists a dispute between Plaintiffs and Defendant EMI regarding the parties’ rights and obligations to one another under the EMI Contract and Extensions.”

Between Kanye signing with EMI in 2003 and 2011, the Chicago talent had written and produced over 200 songs under them. Many of those songs include some of his biggest hits.

The last solo project West released under Roc-A-Fella was 2010’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy followed by his collaborative project Watch The Throne with JAY the following year. The label has been defunct since 2013.

It’s not entirely clear how much money Kanye is seeking, but essentially he’s asking the judge to declare his rights so he can begin collecting his coins.

    1. Wow. Ye hate runs rampant as usual. Dude is worth 200mil. His girl is worth 350mil. Yeezy brand was appraised at almost a billion. He doesn’t need this money, however much it is. I’m sure it’s the principal, he probably hands all of those royalties over to his daughter or some shit.

      1. If he’s got so much money then why was he begging Zuckerberg for money years ago. He’s not the same man that he once was. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but he’s only moderately marketable. He’s got a little bit of fashion sense but because of his recent history of being a overly conservative right wing Trumpster who wanted to impose his way of thing on other while looking down on those with free thoughts is NOT the best way portray yourself. His mental instability is the other issue along with his massively big Ego make him hard for once die hard fans to tolerate him anymore. He’s pretty much a sinking ship.
