New York, NY

Multiple Hip Hop artists were forced to cancel their performances this weekend, including Lil Wayne, The Roots and Lil Kim.

On Friday (July 27), flights in and out of New York City were either cancelled or delayed by several hours due to a lightening storm. According to NBC New York, a ground stop was issued at La Guardia, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark airports.

Wayne, who was scheduled to perform in the Big Apple on Saturday night (July 28) as part of the Panorama Festival, announced the cancellation on Twitter. Panorama ultimately decided to shut down the first night of the festival altogether.

“New York! Panorama! Due to mother nature I was delayed and wont make it,” Wayne wrote. “Kant wait to kome bak and rokk with my NY fans asap.”

The Roots were expected in Detroit on Friday night. As Black Thought was attempting to fly out of NYC, he told HipHopDX he was still stuck on a plane hours after boarding, referring to the situation as a “nightmare.”

Questlove issued a video statement on Instagram and — like Wayne — confirmed weather was to blame for their inability to make it to the Motor City show.

“Alright Detroit, please accept our sincerest, sincerest apologies … over the last 20 plus years, we’ve had maybe five or six ‘what had happened was’ but this one was unavoidable. Most of the New York flights because of the lightening storm kept flights on the ground for like eight hours at a time, and we didn’t want to do a half-ass show.”

The legendary Roots drummer added they would make up the show on August 31 and promised it will “be worth it.”

Thought I’d start w #WhatUpDoe but now it’s more like #WhatHadHappenedWas…yes yes believe me Detroit I know Friday nights are valuable & y’all paid hard earned loot in this shaky uncertain economy to support us (believe you me i didn’t wanna let the city of my musical hero down) @common will still be there tonight. But we will make it up to you AUGUST 31st 2018. Yes we exhausted all options for travel short of plutonium & a flux capacitor (okay I’m kinda freaked out autospell KNEW I was spelling that using “FL” alone ?)—I know y’all mad (@stroelliot was all too happy to Nelson us w the influx of “boos” when the announcement was made (“ahh haa!”)—please forgive us and hopefully we will see you on the 31st

Lil Kim’s itinerary was also affected by the storm. She was scheduled to perform in Toronto, Canada alongside Busta Rhymes at the Rebel Entertainment Complex on Friday (July 28).

“It breaks my heart that I couldn’t be at the show tonight,” Kim wrote on Twitter. “I wish I could be there tonight but due to weather circumstances every flight was delayed and then cancelled. I tried everything in my power to make it and wish I could have performed for you all.

“The promoters and my team are working very hard to get me back to you guys. Love ya!” [apple_news_ad type=”any”]
