Bryson Tiller Blames Depression For “True To Self” LP’s Lack Of Hype

Bryson Tiller recently credited depression as one reason why his sophomore album True To Self, which was released in May 2017, didn’t do well “statistically.”

Tiller’s statement on his experience with depression came roughly one week after a back-and-forth between himself and several fans on Twitter. One fan even said the singer “fell off” musically.

According to Tiller, he was depressed before True To Self was made and it played a role in the final product for his sophomore effort.

“1. i was depressed before i made that album and you can hear it in the music 2. statistically, we didn’t do that great because of it.. and 3. depression ended in 2017 and i been workin hard ever since. stay tuned,” Tiller tweeted on Monday (May 7).

Tiller previously referenced being in a “dark place” during a December 2017 interview with Tim Westwood.

“I was in a dark, dark place after TRAPSOUL, so I don’t know, I wanted to start over and I just don’t feel like I made it yet,” Tiller said.

Despite Tiller referencing underperforming statistics, his breakthrough album TRAPSOUL only sold 22,000 copies in its first week compared to True To Self moving more than double that amount with 47,000 copies sold. True To Self also debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

    1. It failed cause he was being true to self instead of making the cookie cutter music everybody is making

    2. Yeah people keep talking about how bad the album was……I don’t get how you can like the first album and not like the 2nd….

    3. What a little bitch “all this success makes me so depressed” foh, people out here with real problems i dont wanna hear about bitch ass rapper depression go cry somewhere else, you have the opportunity to live your dreams and you depressed in a dark place? Somebody smack this ho

      1. You cant control who has and who doesn’t have depression. It can affect anyone, in any social class, of any skin color. Instead of judging him actually read up on depression and realise how serious it is instead of hating on someone going through it. From this comment its evident that you have never EVER gone through something like that. So stfu and go live the sad life youre gonna continue living for the rest of your life.

        1. He a weak minded individual just like your depressed bitch ass, guess that you like him cause he cries and bitches just like you lol

    4. The album didn’t do well bc it wasn’t good. Hard to follow a classic like TRAPSOUL.
