A pioneering member of the Bay Area hip-hop community died on Monday night. San Francisco’s Coughnut, a founding member of the Ill Mannered Posse, was killed in a car accident.

The rapper was a fixture in the Bay’s underground scene, whose most famous song was Scandalous b/w I’m Rollin. He is also responsible for street gems like Shining Star and Don’t Get it Twisted. He and the Ill Mannered Posse were some of the first underground eighties rappers to become famous across the Bay Area.

Coughnut was working on new material at the time of his death, and was scheduled to perform a few shows in his hometown. The rapper was known as a tough dude with a raspy voice and a larger than life personality.
