Former 2 Live Crew frontman Luther Campbell, aka Luke Skyywalker, ripped into The Source for having the audacity to bring their awards to his city and not honor him.

He recently told the Miami Herald: “I do not feel like David Mays and The Source respected me by coming to my city and giving away the lifetime achievement award to LL Cool J. If it wasn’t for me, rappers would not be able to play the game like they do. I went to jail for the rights of hip-hoppers.”

10 years ago, Luke helped fight the censors who opposed hip-hop’s expression and even went to jail for performing songs off 2 Live Crew’s As Nasty as they Wanna Be. He also helped build the Miami Bass and South Coast movements. Luke boycotted The Source Awards, which were recently held in his hometown of Miami.
