Rakim said he likes “the way that some of the young cats is taking the torch and keeping it lit,” in an interview published to Montreality‘s YouTube channel today (April 27).
“Keep smashing ’em,” he said after listening to J. Cole‘s “Janurary 28th.” “Keep doing your thing, heavy.” In the 2014 record, J. Cole shouted him out saying, “Like the great Rakim, when I make my notes.”
“Kendrick Lamar is, again, that new fuel,” Rakim said in regard to Compton, California’s chart-topping young rapper. “It’s that conscious new fuel, where he’s not just doing what’s hot for today. He has substance and he ain’t scared to make a statement, neither.”
Rakim said it was underground Hip Hop that was successful during his time, music with a conscious message, and now that’s changed. He said Hip Hop needs to maintain its core if it’s going to have any clout.
“We gotta make sure we keep the scale tilted a little bit on the trademark Hip Hop side,” he says, “and everything can filter through as well, as long as we stay focused.”
The interview is as follows:
Funny how this bitch ass negro hates Nas, but praises these dudes. Old bitter dust head. Oh well, at least he didn’t praise a certain camel faced rapper.
Where’s your proof of him hating Nas? Stop spreading misinformation….
Did you just call the GOD of Hip Hop a bitch ass hater ?? Dude stay off the bath salts cause you’re delusional !!
Funny how people with no clue about the industry make hateful statements. Last two times I saw Rakim and Nas together, the God was him supporting Nas at his Distant Relatives conference in DC and partying and performing together for Rosenbergs 40th in NYC. Don’t see a lot of hate there. Go back to your basement son and keep thinking you have a clue about life.
Now The God himself is praising King Kendrick!
In case y’all didn’t know Rakim felt some type of way when Nas made the song unauthorized joint about him. Rakim said himself he didn’t like that joint.
Actually, what he said was he appreciated the love but wished Nas had hit him up first to let him know he was doing the track because there were certain personal things in it Ra doesnt put public. Not an unreasonable request and nothing they have beef over. They’ve worked together many times since that came out.
I still feel that there’s some kind of, I don’t know, tension from the side of Rakim. Like he still couldn’t let these things go. Maybe he just doesn’t like that much NaS’ personality. Anyway, it was probably the right move to abandon that “Unathorized Joint” series, before he might have offended KRS-One as well.
i can’t stand brooklyn cats..they swear up n down they know everything and are the know all be all in the world..like they got some inside powers from rat bites and got knowledge to the entire universe.
It’s funny to me how these fellas can’t even show respect to the God, the R, the 13th…but they quick as FUCK to claim the ‘status’ of what THIS nigga built for they dumb ass…HipHop wouldn’t be SHIT today without legendary MCs like Rakim. You a dumbfuck who ain’t even a LEGIT head. Now walk away, with that thought…as R said “you suckaaaaas!”
I never listened to J Cole but I agree with him on Kendrick.
By the way
, does Raskim some drug addiction? I’m not saying he talks stupid sit. I just ask this questions because every time I watched an interview he didn’t look like a grown ass man like Big Daddy Kane.. his face and how skinny he is look like a crack addicted.
Hooe I’m totally wrong
how you perceive things and feel isn’t how it is
Rakim just lost all credibility with this.
Peace God say no mo

Rikim…
he gave us a better way rhyme…..TRU!
Ra went with the safe choices here. There are other artists out there making good music that he could have gave props. Now you have a bunch of fairweather fans that believe that only Cole and Kendrick alone are making good music which simply isn’t true.
