Souls of Mischief rapper Opio stopped by the HipHopDX offices recently in support of his new EP, The Subconscious Mind, a full-length collaboration with producer Free the Robots.

Besides his new music, Opio touched on the current state of the Internet in the midst of a national debate over the FCC’s recent decision in support of so-called net neutrality.

“I feel very fortunate to be in an era where the Internet is kind of still open,” Opio told DX’s Justin Hunte in a clip that debuted as a part of today’s DX Daily. “I’ve learned so much and had such an opportunity to educate myself by using the Internet. It’s times when you would have had to travel halfway around the world to go to a certain library to look at a book. Now you can actually access the information straight from your home. It’s kind of an incredible thing. I would hate to see that type of shit just disappear.”

Advocates for an open Internet celebrated a major victory earlier this month when the FCC announced plans to reclassify Internet access as a Title II service, reigning in predatory practices from companies like Comcast and Verizon. In essence, the new decision, which will soon be challenged in federal court following the recent publish of the FCC’s full report, levels the playing field for all websites and prohibits service providers from upcharging content companies for faster service.
