A very public breakup — centered around The Pinkprint album — has placed Nicki Minaj and her former boyfriend Safaree Samuels in a position where they’re sparring with one another via social media and press appearances.

Today (January 13), Safaree stopped by Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club to speak openly about his relationship with Nicki and why things seem to have crumbled.

“That was my soulmate,” he says about their once-discreet relationship. “Me and her were calling all the shots.”

Safaree also explains that their relationship originated in a group they both belonged to called The Hood$tarz. When things didn’t work out, Nicki decided to go solo and SB supported her.

“Every time it came to writing raps,” he says, “it was me, her and the beat. It got to the point where the respect was gone. I’m the one who packed my stuff and left.

“Everyone around her works for her,” he continued. “I was being treated like an employee instead of her man.”

Nicki’s rumored relationship with Meek Mill was brought up and DJ Envy asked Safaree if he was the one that introduced her to Meek.

“Yeah,” he replies. “But if that’s who she decides to move on with, it is what it is. I’m not mad. I’m not bitter. If I wanted to make it work, I could’ve made it work. She can take a picture with whoever she wants, she can get married tomorrow and be pregnant the next day I will wish her the best, but when you try to pull me down and discredit what I’ve done for you, that’s what’s weak to me.”

Safaree emphasized to the hosts that the “respect was gone.” So, when he heard the harsh lyrics on Nicki’s track “Only,” he says that he was numb to it.

“As far as the ‘Only’ song, that’s something on the outside people take as disrespect,” he says. “Maybe, I’ve been dealing with it for so long, it seemed like the norm to me. I got numb to it.”

Although it appears his ex has moved on, Safaree says he’s not trying to rush into a new relationship.

“I need to learn myself right now because I lost myself, so I’m trying to build myself back up,” he says. “I’m getting used to being around people again.”
