“I guess they’re trying to make up for the Junos tonight,” joked Kardinal Offishall as he accepted his third trophy of the night at the Urban Music Association of Canada’s (UMAC) third annual Urban X-Posure Awards.

Kardi took home best hip-hop/rap recording and best video honours, both for BaKardi Slang. He also won the award for best songwriter for that same anthem. The song’s producer Solitair won best producer honours as well.

Toronto’s Baby Blue Sound Crew were voted as best new artists, and were also picked, along with singer Glenn Lewis, as best r & b/ soul recording for their song Only Be in Love. The crew lost to Baba Khan in the best DJ/ DJ Crew category.

Four legends of the Canadian urban music industry were honoured with lifetime achievement awards, including radio personality Ron Nelson, businessman Denham Jolly, and managers Chris Smith and Sol Guy. Guy roused the crowd with a moving acceptance speech, where he slammed jiggy artists Puffy and Jay-Z for projecting negative images to youth. He called on all involved with the Canadian hip-hop industry, including himself, to take more responsibility for their image. “Always think of the kids,” he said.
