DJ Mustard’s production has been in demand by artists all elements of Hip Hop and is heavily influential in creating a new wave of West Coast sound.
“It was dead. It wasn’t nothing going on,” DJ Mustard said when asked about his production. “We had OGs like Snoop [Dogg], Dr. Dre, [Ice] Cube, all of them but it was time for a new generation and nobody in this audience can tell me somebody they was listening to before me and YG started bringing that sound back together. You got me, you got Nipsey [Hussle] you got Dom [Kennedy], you got Casey Veggies like now that’s all together. It wasn’t nobody before that.”
Mustard also explained where a lot of his hunger came from during his start in Hip Hop. He attributes a lot of his success to the negative words of a person on Twitter who subtweeted the producer/rapper duo and the motivation that came from it.
“I remember this girl got into it with YG and she said on Twitter, she was subliminally tweeting me and YG and she was like, ‘Ya fat friend doesn’t have a car,’ and that made me mad,” he explained. “And then she said, ‘You’re a one-hit wonder,’ and that made me mad… Once I figured it out, we just came back and we kept going and kept going… I be at [YG’s] house all night making beats and his momma didn’t complain one time, or my mom.”
Also during the interview, which coincidentally took place in Los Angeles, DJ Mustard described where his famous producer tag came from and why he chose it.
“I guess he was just feeling it one moment in a song we was doing and he just said it and I just branded it,” Mustard said. “I just kind of took it upon myself to just start putting it on everything so people could know it was me. It was just my signature tag.”
