Adrian Younge says Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes play roles on There Is Only Now, the upcoming collaborative album from Younge and Souls of Mischief.

The album is based around a near-death experience that Souls of Mischief had in 1994, when they were shot at in the parking lot of a club. “In real life, they never really figured who it was and why,” Adrian Younge says in an interview with XXL. “But it was just being in Oakland. Oakland was crazy at that time. Busta Rhymes plays the shooter [on the album]. Snoop plays one of his confidants. The whole story is based on this.”

The music video for the title track, which features Snoop Dogg, was released earlier this month, and Younge said that Snoop Dogg approached him to work on new material.

Younge compared There Is Only Now to his 2013 collaboration with Ghostface Killah, Twelve Reasons to Die.

“What people liked in Ghostface’s [12 Reasons To Die] as far as being dark, Italian cinema type shit, what they’ll like in this is that it’s dark, jazzy, cinematic shit,” he says. “But vintage Black American shit, which is different.”

There Is Only Nowis slated for an August 26 release.
