From declaring “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” on live television during a telethon for Hurricane Katrina relief to storming the MTV VMA stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech in 2009, rapper Kanye West has had his fair share of memorable moments throughout his first decade in the spotlight. With the release of his #1 album Yeezus a few weeks ago, Pepsi.com has decided to put together a list of Kanye’s “Top 5 Now Moments” of his career. The list consists of some of West’s biggest moments and career milestones.
One of the top now moments that Pepsi included was the release of his single “Stronger,” off his Graduation album. Sampling Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” the single gave West one his biggest hits up to that point in his career. “Stronger” peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified 5x platinum by the RIAA.
Also included by Pepsi was the Chicago artist’s 2008 album 808s & Heartbreak. 808’s marked a shift from the college-themed albums of West’s first three studio efforts to melancholic, auto-tune infused music that saw him singing more than he rapped. Coming off a break-up with his long-time fiancée and the death of his mother, Kanye West made an album that was markedly different from the music he had released at that point in his career. Even with the dramatic shift in style, the album still reached #1 on the Billboard 200 Album chart and was certified platinum.
Another “Now Moment” Pepsi added to their list was Kanye’s public relationship with reality star Kim Kardashian, known as “Kimye” to many. The two started dating in 2012 and had their first child together, daughter North West, on June 15. West has made appearances on his girlfriend’s E! reality show “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” and recorded the song “White Dress,“ which featured Kim on the song’s cover art.
