Although Jay-Z has hung up his mic for the moment and Beanie Siegel is facing time in jail, Damon Dash doesn’t plan on letting Roc-A-Fella Records lose its status as one of the hottest labels in hip-hop. Dash has formed Dash Films, which will make its debut with “State Property II” scheduled to be released at the end of this year. Hoping to gain a bigger viewing audience at the box office, Damon Dash is sure this movie will grab people’s attention.
“It’s like a cult classic, this movie, everyone has been talking about it,” he told Billboard about the original film. “I felt it could have been done a little bit better”. Although the star of the movie, Beanie Sigel may not get to do much promotion because of legal trouble, Dash is more than proud of his efforts in the film. “It took a lot of strength for Beanie to be [filming] in a prison — because he might end up in one — and maintain a smile on his face,” Dash said. “He’s great; he’s a good guy. He’s strong, and he also has a good attitude.”
The one surprise takeover Damon feels was unexpected in hip-hop is Kanye West’s success as an artist. It means everything in the world to me. I feel like I have something to prove. Jay-Z has been the franchise. The minute Jay retired, Kanye stepped in. He’s not the traditional rapper, and he’s definitely not what people expected of Roc-A-Fella”. In other news Jay’s second installment of sneaker’s has been moved up for early release dates. The S. Carter sneaker has been moved from June 11th to May 28th and the S. Carter Tennis from July 2nd to June 18th. Jay-Z will also be the recipient of the 2004 ASCAP Golden Note Award for his songwriting abilities on June 28th.
