Continuing to push forward over a year after Jam Master Jay’s death, the family he left behind refuses to see politics get in the way of his memory. Marvin Thompson and the rest of Jason Mizell’s family are hard at work to get a possible four-block stretch of Hollis Avenue (195th and 205) in Queens, New York renamed for Jam Master Jay. Formerly headed by The Queens based Hip-Hop Summit Council, the family has decided to take over the campaign to the community board even if it means starting over.

Randy Fisher, the executive director of the Youth Council said, “Marvin and his family have been moving in another direction. Whatever the family wants to do, they’re the front runners.” Following a new plan does not seem to stop the families from achieving their goal. “We may have to get everyone who signed a petition supporting it to resign,” he said. “I know how I would feel if I had to sign the same thing over”, Thompson said. When asked about the murder investigation in Jay’s death Marvin said, “The last time I spoke to the officer it was still going. Everybody’s got speculations and rumors, but they’re going to keep case open.”
