Azealia Banks has been cooking up her debut album Broke With Expensive Taste for a minute, with plans to drop the project in early 2013. Speaking with Beats TV, the Harlem, New York rapstress explained that she isn’t focusing on settling into a genre or capturing a vibe for the project, but is rather looking to prove herself.

“The vision and vibe that I have for Broke With Expensive Taste is just for it to be stylish and authentic like anything I do,” she explained. “There isn’t a genre I’m trying to go for or a specific vibe that I’m trying to go for. I’m going for authenticity.”

She also touched on her breakout hit “212,” stating that it’s about a girl who is giving it her all for one last shot at stardom. The track managed to accomplish just that with her career, earning her a record deal with Interscope and co-signs from Kanye West and Karl Lagerfeld.

“‘212’ is a song that saved my life,” she said. “‘212’ is a song about the girl who has always desired this stardom and it’s just not happening, so this is her last straws of everything where she’s just kind of freaking out like yo, I’m, going to get it. However way I get it, I’m going to get it and I’m going to keep it and it’s going to be mine.
