In an advance clip from his upcoming episode of VH1’s “Behind the Music,” T.I. recalls his time behind bars, stating that he had to shift his mindset to prepare for his bid. The clip, one of the several added to the update of his 2009 episode, shows Tip explaining how he predictably wasn’t happy in jail.

“I don’t think I have to sell the fact that prison sucks,” he said. “When you have your liberties and the loves of your life taken away from you, it puts a lot of things in perspective.”

His wife, Tameka , said that they were constantly in contact and that her husband couldn’t wait to get out of the clink. “We talked every day and he would let me know ‘I got so and so many days’ and he was counting down,” she said. “I guess that he felt that what didn’t kill him made him stronger.”

For T.I., his variety of personalities allowed him to navigate circles in prison and that he used that to his advantage. “That time was a lot more difficult for me. It was a lot more mental adjusting. I approached prison as a normal guy, everybody treated me as a normal guy,” he noted. “I am a man of many different personalities. I can be real laidback in a calm setting and I can turn up when it’s time to. That allows me to travel within many different circles. It was no different in prison.”

T.I.’s episode of VH1’s “Behind the Music” airs tonight at 10 p.m. EST. Watch the clip below (via EW.com).
