One of the year’s biggest commercial surprises is officially Seattle, Washington’s Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. The pair’s The Heist, a self-released album, earned a #2 debut on the charts. Moreover, the latest in a series of EP and LP releases dating back a decade was within striking distance of the top of the charts, losing only to Mumford & Sons. Also in the Top 5 was Machine Gun Kelly with his own full-length debut on the Bad Boy imprint, Lace Up.
Macklemore achieved a feat that veteran star Xzibit could now. The comeback album from the longtime Likwit Crew and Dr. Dre affiliate debuted at #140, with high-profile guests including the aforementioned. The third new edition came courtesy of a Best Buy exclusive release of XXL magazine, which included two CDs of music from Hip Hop stars. This is the latest in a series of albums the veteran publication has released since 2005.
Last week’s news-maker DJ Drama, fell 60 spots with Quality Street Music. Meanwhile, Skyzoo, Kutt Calhoun and Z-Ro, who all delivered Top 200 albums, left the rankings after just one week each.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Take MGK’s Lace Up By Heist
The Heist notably out-sold Bad Boy Records sensation Machine Gun Kelly and Lace Up by over 25,000 records. Macklemore, approaching 30, has a career dating back to the late ’90s within the Seattle underground. His latest self-released effort sold an astounding 78,000 copies, and features appearances from Black Hippy’s Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q over Ryan’s production.
Meanwhile, Machine Gun Kelly followed his March EP with his Lace Up full-length. Part of Bad Boy’s face-lift over the last year, the Cleveland, Ohio native received assistance from DMX, Waka Flocka Flame and Tech N9ne. Respectably, MGK cracked the 50,000 mark in his debut week.
Xzibit Drops Napalm
Following a six-year hiatus from album-making, Xzibit released Napalm last week. The emcee/actor/television personality released the album through his own EMI-backed Open Bar imprint, and returned to his late ’90s style from the Loud Records days. X-to-the-Z enlisted Dr. Dre, The Alkaholiks, King Tee and E-40 on his seventh studio album, while also involving newer acts like Game, Bishop Lamont and Slim The Mobster. In addition to Dre producing “Louis XIII,” Akon, Rick Rock and Saukrates contributed music to the effort. Debuting at #140, this marks the lowest debut in X’s 16-year career, selling just over 3,000 copies.

JUST DON’T LET JOELL NEAR THE BUFFET OR IT’S GAME FUCKING OVER.
I feel sorry for you.
stfu you fucking hater.
juss cuz you can’t rap like them doesn’t mean you can fuck their rep. go cut your dick you ignorant fuck.
Nas isn’t hot anymore, however, you can never take away his history.
Mack is independant so those sales are pretty decent. He did better than TechN9ne
I guess u r too stupid to realise that this fool is now on P Diddy’s bad boy records…
@Eat a dick. #1 Nice Name. #2 I guess u r too stupid to realize (with a “z,” idiot) that “Mack” is Macklemore, and he is not on P Diddy’s bad boy records or any other label. Sit down son.
RealiZe is just the American bastardized version on how to spell the word. The correct english spelling is realiSe. Nice try on being an internet spelling nazi. Stupid.
@braniac Yeah, right. I guess I am to assume that “eat a dick” is a super smart guy living in the UK, right? He probably has a “favourite colour” as well, right? LOL. No dumba**, @eat a dick is an idiot who cannot read or spell. Nice try though.
Ross isn’t even officially gold yet lol. Yet he keeps bragging about being gold in shipments, only failures do that.
Honestly feel sorry for Xzibit. His album is really really good.
Tech flopped,Dmx and now Xzibit…pfff…i feel sorry for real rappers
Tech hasn’t even dropped an LP… so how did he flop?
How did Tech flop? Dude kills it on the indie tip.
Tech sold 13K of a digital only EP that he didnt even promote, lol, hardly a flop
and DMX sold 18k with no advertise at all, just few interviews
Wow, no MellowHype ?
MellowHype only sold 6,900 :-/.
that shit out already?!!?
Yeah, it’s been a week since they released their album. 6,900 is ok, I expected more though.
MGK fans are crying right now.
Crying why? 50K respectable.
why are so many americans so fu*ing dumb??? I bought lace up and i dont care how many records he sold
I buy music cuz i like it- plain and simple- f**k record sales
grow up people and get educated smh
im loving the xzibit album, this should be #1. whats wrong with hip hop fans these days?
yeah i bought napalm last week- decent album
i like 70% of the album
i don’t listen no crackers!
lol must be very educated I would assume
eminem is white and shits on 95% of the industry
all yopu crackers need to stop and no emeinem does not shit on 95% of the industry
It sad that 2 Chainz is selling more records then a person like Nas, Real Hip Hop fans know Record sales don’t mean that much anymore, True artist know that tours is how most of there money will be made. There is still artist out there that make music for the fans and not just a quick buck.
2 Chainz tour is selling more tickets then Nas as well so I dont know what you were trying to prove with that remark
Real Hip Hop fans, as you call them, are the most worthless audience in all of music. They nitpick and complain about everything and still don’t break bread when something miraculously manages to meet their elitest douchebag standards.
I’d rather have 2 Chainz fanbase then Nas’s anyday
I agree. Record sales is only a true reflection of the effectiveness of the marketing strategy of the record label. The 2Chainz album got unfavorable reviews and yet you see the Lupe Fiasco is projected to sell less and, as mentioned, the Nas album sold less even though those 2 albums got great reviews. Record sales and talent are in no way shape or form positively correlated
Record sales mean alot. Artists still have to sell every copy they can cause best believe the label is tracking it.
You’re dumb.
Anonymous you are a dumbass. Nas has good sales over his career, he has longevity and most importantly respect. Something that 2chainz will ever have. Hes not even a lyricist more like a pop rapper. Nas is a true legend.
3k damn mr x to the z
LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
2CHAINS OUT SOLD NAS
Yet Nas has a better album.
2 many faggots downloading napalm through torrents thats why
they would rather go out and buy a gay ass 2 chainz album mfh
50k aint bad for mgk but i doubt diddy will give him another go at a second album with good promotion fuck that nigga dunno y ppl go near him he has never had a long succesful music relationship with any artist. Dont say biggie if he was alive guarentee he would of left bad boy with The LOX
DX should stop posting this shit, who cares about sales, they don’t mean shit anymore. Most of us download shit no matter how ill it is
i bet 95% of the people posting comments on this site are just kids who’s balls haven’t droppd yet smh
MY BALLS JUST DROPPED INTO YOUR MOM’S MOUTH AND SHE’S GENTLY SUCKING…
read my name hoe
Independent is the way to go now, you don’t need a major label to sell okay numbers. Plus think about how much money Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have made off their album compared to what MGK got off his, and MGK is signed to Diddy so he’s gonna get even less then some other major label slave.
I think that you are right, but it is probably a lot easier for Macklemore to swing this than it would have been for MGK. Macklemore is 30 or older, and has been in this business a long long time. MGK is 22, and didn’t exactly have a lot of resources. My guess is not a lot of business acumen either. Plus he needed to eat and to support a daughter. My guess is that if he gets dropped he will stay independent now that he has some experience. Those who do it successfully tend to have age/experience (Tech; Macklemore) or stable solid backgrounds (Mac Miller; Asher).
So Mac Miller is younger than MGK and is also independent… Why couldn’t MGK do what Mac did?
I’m not saying he couldn’t, but I think that Mac has a lot of resources MGK did not have. At least from what I have seen publicly, Mac has a solid family foundation and could probably afford to take chances with an indy career. He probably also had a lot of adults to rely on for guidance. At the time MGK signed, he had a decent (not huge) YouTube presence and could sell shows in Cleveland but very little else. He had no parental contact, he was flat broke, living on a couch in his manager’s Mom’s basement, and working (when he wasn’t getting fired) in fast food shops to keep food on the table and support a newborn daughter. All while trying to pay for studio time, push his music, etc. I am not saying he couldn’t have stuck it out, but I think that he had strong incentives to take a deal. Plus, my guess is that if Mac had failed, next step would have been college. If MGK failed, it was going to be a life of minimum wage with a kid to raise. Anyway — not saying he couldn’t have done it alone, but I can see why he chose not to.
Real talk, MGK had a shitload of promo and he does Yelawolf numbers. But Yela ‘s album is at 200k lets see if MGK can pull that off. Slaughterhouse outsold this man by 1k and their shit was never on the radio. All I heard was “Wild Boy” & “Invincible”. If you ask me MGK is a real flop. Hats off to Macklemore for outselling him with no promo & on his own indie label. Him & Ryan Lewis are getting 100% of all royalties.

big sales on the way:KENDRICK…MEEK..&SAIGON……
Saigon lucky if his dirty ass sells 10,000 copies
yah Brian Saigon is sure to push at least 260 copies of his shit biscuit… hard to believe his Rockland Cty retard army won’t stand up better than that but maybe, like Brian, they spent all their money on steroids and stupid pills.
LMAO Saigon is gonna do Skyzoo numbers. Most overrated underground rappers ever, that’s why it took YEARS for Saigon to release his debut. They should do a collab album, then I’ll put it on my ipod when I’m having a hard time falling asleep.
the PUFF DADDY 4ever.
and old skool ‘YE..revisited!….#I LUV DEVO’$….MZ TRACY666!
HAPPY KENDRICK MONTH!
is the LAUGHTERHOUSE album out yet or is Em still “in the lab” “mixing”?
Do you still curl in the fetal position at night because there are no Slaughterhouse articles?
lmao @ the original post. But seriously, the album got pushed back like 5 times, and every interview with Slaughterhouse was about Eminem. The hype of the album did not match the sales. No matter what excuse you use, we’re talking about 4 of the so-called “best lyricists” working with Eminem, and the album flopped due to poor quality. BTW the album IS out…but half of their fans wanted to “throw it away” when they heard it.
TOP FIVE BEST SELLING RAP ALBUMS THIS YEAR SO FAR
1. Nick Minaj Pink Friday Roman Reloaded
2. Rick Ross God Forgives, I Don’t
3. GOOD Music Cruel Summer
4. 2Chainz Based On A T.R.U. Story
5. Nas Life Is Good
But this list could change before this year is over from new releases by Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and T.I.
You know that’s not a good thing right?
@ETL He never said it was, He’s just stating the truth.
Nicki Minaj album is not rap.
Jeezy’s 103 is at 650,000 right now.
Exactly.. numbers dont lie! Jeezy moves wayyy more units than Ross.. always will!
3 platinum plaques prove it!
Recession sit at 950k or so…
No bro, recession is gold its over 1 milli copies…. seen the SOUND scan plus jeezy got the platnium plaque from RIAA so yea recession is official gold and sold over 1 mill copies . 3 platnium plaques, aint got nothing gold but some gold chains say jizzle whats to goal move the wholE thang, mohahahahahahha tm103 will be platnium by next year rick ross stay losin
in that complex mag article that 50 and French is beefing over, French stated that this was gonna be Ross’ first plat album. Was he talking about GFID?
frenchy on drugs
fuck sales the best album of the year is The man with the iron fist soundtrack then ill go with undun and all the albums from the T.D.E movement oh and MIC TYSON.
LAUGHTERHOUSE sneaking up on the charts… like a fucking sniper!!!
Do you still stare at Joell Ortiz pictures to see how “fat” he is?
xzibit album is shitin on this mainstream crap
Are we hearing the same album? It was shit. Horrible production throughout. Stop praising an album that came in at #140.
You’re a dumbass.
Its a shame!!!Xzibit for life!!Album of the year!!!Fuck ymcb !!!
Xzibit album is defiantly one of the best albums of the year hands down.
xzibit’s album should be number 1 without a doubt, but it dont matter as long as i enjoyed the shit
did anyone know xzipits was dropping a album? no? oh
and who are the heist? they good?
2 Chainz album bumps harder in the whip.
Lol Nigga you don’t even believe that bullshit!!
Wow 3 big new albums, 2 debut in the top 5, and none of them reviewed on Hiphopdx……wtf????
seriously, get on your shit dx
AFTER SLAUGHTERHOUSE NUMBERS I HOPE NOBODY WILL CALL MGK NUMBERS A FLOP. JUST THINK ABOUT IT, SELLOUTHOUSE HAD ALL THAT SHADY AND INTERSCOPE PROMO, DELAY, PUBLICITY STUFF, SUCKING EMINEM’S DICK AND TALKING ABOUT HIM IN EVERY FUCKING INTERVIEW, NOWADAYS POP RAP PRODUCERS AND SINGERS ON ALBUM AND THEY STILL MANAGED TO PUSH ONLY 52K IN THEIR FIRST WEEK. AND THEY HAVE BEEN TEN YEARS LONGER IN THE GAME THAN MGK.
MGK DIDN’T HAVE A HALF OF SAUSAGEBOYS PROMO, HE HAD SOME INDEPEDENT AND UNKNOWN PRODUCERS AND FEATURINGS ON HIS ALBUM, HALF OF THE SONGS WERE RELEASED ON HIS EP OR MIXTAPES AND HAVE YOU EVER SEEN HIM TALKING ABOUT DIDDY IN EVERY INTERVIEW?
LACE UP IS STRAIGHT CLASSIC, ALONGSIDE WITH NAS, LUPE, ROSS AND 2 CHAINZ ALBUMS. MEANWHILE, SLAUGHTERHOUSE MADE ON OF THE WORST DEBUTS AND ALBUMS EVER.
AND PEOPLE LIKE XZIBIT SHOULD RETIRE ASAP. HE SUCKS, HAS TERRIBLE VOICE AND IS IRRELEVANT. ONLY THING WHY HE IS FAMOUS IS MTV PIMP MY RIDE. FUCK HIM
Kill yourself for that bullshit you said. Seriously.
I feel real bad for Xzibit. Xzibit and Eminem are my 2 favorite rappers. I went to Best Buy, Target and they didn’t have the Napalm. X needs some promotion. I prefer to buy physical albums over digital. Now I have to buy X’s album physicality. Also to anyone who says shit about Slaughterhouse, MGK got a hell of a lot of promotion and had 2 hit singles that were in the top 100. Slaughterhouse only had 1 which they released a week before the album in the top 100 and didn’t have the promotion MGK did and sold the same amount. My point? Slaughterhouse didn’t flop. Xzibit also didn’t flop. X just needs more promotion, have a couple tracks feature Snoop, Em, Dre, and Kendrick.
when you called 2chains album a classic i felt a lot better about your comment, you are clearly a child who has suffered massive head trauma and shouldn’t be takens seriously, but should be treated gently
RICK ROSS STILL UNDER HALF A MILLI LOL. NIGGA IS SILLY. LOL
If hes silly for over 400k what is nas for over 300k then?????????????
dumb hater
because all ross has is sales to garner any sort of respect since his album has no critical acclaim and since rozzay all about that .. nas album was a fkn beast
LOL at Xzibit I knew this nigga would flop big tyme.
NAPALM LMFAOO!!!!!!!!
MGK….SMH WHO BOUGHT THOSE!???
PROPS TO MACKLEMORE
wow they say nas got the most suportive fans but yet he gets out sold by 2 chainz lol
I bought Nas’ album. But yeah, most(not all) of his fan base is a joke…lol. All talk, no buying.
300K IS NOT A SUPPORTIVE BASE?
2CHAINZ HAS TO MAINTAIN THAT 300K CORE FOR THE NEXT 17 YEARS
4 U 2 POSE AN ARGUMENT OVER 17K COPIES & SUPPORT
300k in 4 months is not supportive for anyone, letalone a legend with psychotic dickriders. all talk
“300k in 4 months is not supportive for anyone”
^ sheer nonsense
first week or 6 months it’s still 300,000 and going units sold to people who listen to his music, which means they are supporting him.
X to the Ziiiiiiiiiiii……(silence)
I feel for a Xzibit. He took too much time off and it hurt him severely. Those are retirement numbers right there.
i’m not ashamed to say “ey3 bought LUPE”…..
I used to work at a restaurant. All the servers/waiters showed Xzibit mad love the first time. Then, he became a regular, and every time he rolled in with his olive green Bentley he would eat for a bout an hour spending 80-100 bucks tipping NO MORE THAN 5 DOLLARS. #Cheapskate #Karma #DeservedToOnlySell1CopyBoughtByHisUncle
SOMEBODY TELL EM HE CAN STOP ‘MIXING’ THE LAUGHTERHOUSE ALBUM ALREADY…
LMMFAO
GAME BEEN OVA
& U STIL CHEERLEADING FROM DA BLEACHERS WHEN EVERYBODY LEFT & DA LIGHTS R OFF
“HEY BERNIE…….THERE’S SOME FAT KID UP IN THE BLEACHERS….HE’S WAVING A SIGN THAT SAYS LAUGHTERHOUSE”
“WASN’T THAT GAME MONTHS AGO?”
“YEAH…..HE’S WAVING THE BIG GULP CUP WE GAVE AWAY AT THAT GAME”
LMAO
TROLLING IS NOT A HOBBY
GO LEARN A REAL ONE
HOW COME 80,000 PPL KNOW WHO MACKELMORE IS???
that’s a good question.
You should listen to his album its fucking dope i’m glad he did that number. Artists like macklemore should be known.
I only heard thrift shop like 3 weeks ago, downloaded the album last week and let me tell you I put that album against anything released this year. It’s phenomenal. Although I don’t expect the stock sent to Toronto record stores to be all that high, its late getting here so its still isnt on the shelves but Im buying mine. And let me tell you, tickets for his November 23 show in Toronto are already sold out, this independent grind of his has a following far outside of Seattle.
I’M NOT EVEN DISSING HIS MUSIC…I DONT KNOW HIS MUSIC AND NOT REALLY INTERESTED IN KNOWING…I’M JUST PERPLEXED AT HOW 80,000 PPL HAVE HEARD OF THIS PERSON!!!
A lot more than 80,000 people know who macklemore is. Its just that 80,000 people are willing to support him. Mack in Ryan are bringing something new to the table and Macklemore has something to say. People like that in rappers and they are willing to go out of there way to support those kind of rappers. This same group support rappers that are down to earth as well. Atmosphere, Hopsin, Lupe, Tech N9ne all fall in this categories. Well…Tech does not always have something to say. Watch Hopsin to be the next indy rapper to blow up as well.
Maybe it’s just 80k in this first week. Some of us have jobs and are waiting for funds to buy this album. You might see 15k-30k the next week and down from there. From what I’ve heard this album deserves that #2 spot.

so i guess ross just gonna let 50 have that hahah
Of course X’s album flopped, I DIDNT EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT UNTIL NOW! You cant sell a cd for the first time in 6 years with no promotion cmon…
just as Marilyn responded I’m surprised that you can make $7294 in one month on the internet. did you look at this web site (Click on menu Home more information) http://goo.gl/SUzsI
Damn, sucks (but understandable) to see that Showbiz & A.G.’s Mugshot Music didn’t chart in this week’s list (shit, they probably didn’t even chart in the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums). That album may not be as awesome as the Preloaded mixtape, but it was still good to listen to A.G.’s rhymes in Showbiz’s beats.
They didn’t promote It properly. Theres been no videos and things a pretty much word of mouth. On the positive side at least their not signed to Sony/Columbia like Kreaflop!!!!!
Time to end this G.O.A.T. foolishness.
In this constant debate about Jay-Z being the best ever I read things like “Nas will destroy Jay-Z” or “Eminem got a better flow than Jay”
Those are OPINIONS.
When will you fools learn that you can’t win a debate with OPINIONS. Every rapper has a different style based on where they are from, the time period in which they were most successful, and their unique personality. We all can go on for days about our personal preferences but in a debate criteria like this is completely IRRELEVANT and automatically BIASED.
The only way to win a debate is with cold hard FACTS. And the fact of the matter is that, when you weigh all of the tangible criteria (Sales, Critical Acclaim, Consistency, Longevity, and Impact) Jay-Z makes the strongest case for the G.O.A.T.
Eminem has sold nearly twice as much as Jay-Z, and he is Jay’s equal when it comes to longevity and impact. But Em lacks the consistency or critical acclaim that Jay-Z has (Im not talkin cult/fanboy classics, Im talkin CERTIFIED classics. XXL/Rolling Stone/Source approved) Eminem is VERY close though.
Nas has enjoyed more critical acclaim and more overall respect in the hip-hop community through the years. And he’s definitely equal to Jay with longevity and impact. But he hasn’t been no where near as much of a consistent presence in hip-hop as Jay has. And he is obviously lacking in the sales department.
Lil Wayne just may be the most consistent rapper of all time. He’s no slouch when it comes to longevity and impact either. His glaring flaw? In his 12 year career Lil Wayne has yet to drop a truly critically acclaimed classic album (and it can be done in this climate. just look at kanye’s discography). Also, contrary to popular beleif, Wayne lacks in the sales department. Sure, Tha Carter III and IV are blockbuster albums, but his OVERALL sales of 10 mil US pale in comparison to Jay-Z’s 31 mil.
2pac is a touchy subject. When it comes to impact, pac takes the cake. No other rapper touched the world like 2pac did. He, like Em, has also sold more than Jay and he was very consistent in his time. Sadly, 2pac passed before his time which allowed Jay-Z to surpass him in longevity and critical acclaim.
LL Cool J was the prototype for what a G.O.A.T. could be. He has enjoyed the most longevity, and he was fairly consistent, but his sales, acclaim and overall impact are no where near the likes of 2pac, Eminem, and ofcourse Jay-Z.
Biggie, Rakim, Common, Snoop, the list goes on. All of these MC’s are great but none of them have the total G.O.A.T. package like Jay-Z does.
Jay-Z is the 3rd highest selling rapper of all time, and the richest. He’s one of the most acclaimed (perhaps only rivaled by his boy Kanye). He dropped multi-platinum albums YEARLY from 96′-03′, and he is still going strong today. He’s been in the game since 88′. He’s impacted hip-hop in countless ways from starting one of the 1st successful MC-owned record labels, to being the 1st non-athlete with a signature shoe, to surpassing the likes of Elvis with #1 albums.
Jay-Z is without question the Greatest MC Of All Time. Period. You don’t have to listen to him everyday (Im currently on my Kendrick wave). You don’t even have to like him. But for goodness sake, RESPECT THE FACTS.
What the hell Nas and Jay got to do with this??? the title said HIP HOP album sales and you comparing Jay and Nas….that shit is old as hell now…It’s like talking about LLCool J vs Canibus…u liviing in the past dickhead plus they good friends now so it’s time to move on…your opinion dont mean shit…who cares..we know u sucking off Jay so who givs a shit…they getting money while you posting about them…Dumb ass kids!!
I refuse to read your novel.
Why do you feel you have to continuously copy and paste this flawed thesis when it is ripped to shreds due to your lack of intelligence every time you post?
This and the “all rappers are fake” by hhdx Rozay are probably the same person.
Napalm was fire – but it wasn’t promoted anywhere! The only places I saw it promoted was on X’s twitter and websites like these. When it was released, I didn’t even see it on the front page of the Rap/Hip-Hop section of iTunes and it wasn’t advertised in any store ads (Best Buy, Target). It was an amazing album, but how is an album going to sell if no one knows about it?
Beg for Mercy > Cruel Summer
insecure ass gunit fan lol smh.
its the truth
Shame about Xzibit’s album, it’s a fucking dope record. He needs more promotion other than twitter n shit.
LMAO Kendrick’s album leaked yesterday y’all I just downloaded the shit and it’s GARBAGE so don’t even bother buying it.
how are you going to just devote your life to hateing on one of the only mc’s really doing it right now? go listen to immortal technique
“My point? Slaughterhouse didn’t flop. Xzibit also didn’t flop”
Slaughterhouse flopped. Trust me. Xzibit didn’t have the budget they did so for him the pain of a flop is easy to shrug off, but Em’s buddies will be feeling the sting of defeat for years to come.
It’s a shame X to the Z f to the lopped.
Life is Good is the only album i bought all year, and im gonna buy Kendrick Lamars album next week.
