Lauyrn Hill is facing up to three years in prison after failing to pay $1.8 million in federal taxes, but her problems with Uncle Sam run deeper than thought.
According to TMZ, the reclusive singer is also accused of failing to pay $446,386 in state taxes, says the State of New Jersey. The State entered a civil judgment against Hill on June 14th, but it hasn’t yet become a criminal matter for the artist.
In June, Hill pleaded guilty to intentionally failing to file federal tax returns in 2005, 2006 and 2007. She faces up to three years in prison, and will be sentenced in November.
Responding to the situation, Hill took to Tumblr at the time to give her side of the story. “My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes,” Hill explained. “This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family.”
